The most exciting news is that our members have voted to approve moving forward with the acquisition of Bird’s Eye Cove Marina at Maple Bay. We held a Special General Meeting on Wednesday, September 25th, to review the opportunity and have an open question and answer period, followed by a vote where 81% of those present plus proxies voted in favour. The interesting fact about the vote is that it reflects what we have seen in the past two membership surveys, 2012 and 2017, where 80% of the members who responded expressed the desire for a new, wholly owned outstation, preferably in the Gulf Islands. I would like to thank all of the members who made the effort to be there or hand out their proxy. The meeting was very well attended and the opinions and questions were thoughtful and respectful. I would also like to thank the Outstation Acquisition Committee for the tremendous work that they have been doing on this and for making sure that every bit of due diligence is being observed. This process is still underway and we have a bit more work to do, but we are making good progress. The closing date for this property is currently set as October 31, 2019, and assuming that we are able to remove all subjects I should have a more concrete announcement on this new outstation next month. We have so much more on the go… please take a look at the events calendar and make plans to be here. Cliff Taylor Commodore

SWALLOWING THE ANCHOR

Have you ever heard the nautical term “swallowing the anchor”? It doesn’tsound very pleasant. It is a term that I hear more often especially in mydelicate time of 60 plus years of boating. I find that many of my yachtingfriends have indeed swallowed the anchor.

After being a 39 year member of BYC I wonder WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Theterm, I deduce, goes back to the ancient times of leaving the sea faring life andplanting your barnacle incrusted feet firmly on land. One with the worms so tospeak. I know this sounds impossible but it does happen. Bob and RoseRobertson have just done this before my very eyes and they are not the onlyones at 45 year members of BYC. Neil and Sue Anderson 27 year members, areselling their precious “Gray Pearl”. The handsome “Banook” of Goodhearts, 27year members, boat is on the chopping block. The Bubbs, 25 year members, protest mightily that there is another dream boat in their future, but where isit? Could it be a shared family affair? Then there’s the Hammonds, 36 yearmembers of BYC. Could this mean no more Tollycraft? Does this mean no moresporting of The Tolly T- shirts? No more Rendezvous? No more beating of chests about the virtue of being aTolly person.

How many of these seafarers are hiding in the Club? HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN? And there are the rumoursof downsizing your vessel or is this just the beginning of the slippery slope and an easy, cowardly way ofmaking the bitter pain of swallowing the anchor easier. I, being new member some 39 years ago used tostalk the docks perhaps to creep up behind a very old member…… one who is on the verge of swallowing theanchor and try to frighten him into cardiac arrest and a good new posting and their shelter for us younglings. My fellow young BYC boaters upon hearing of some old members demise would say Poor old SO and SO andwhat shelter did you say he was in?

Now in a twinkle of an eye time has moved on. I and my geriatric friends are now, when trekking to ourvessels, spending more time looking over our shoulders for that younger member that covets our BYC berth. My advice to them is be patient. We all “swallow the anchor” in the end and you will in time too.

BY the way you OLD FARTS IN BAGGY PANTS, we will miss you very much. You have been the glueand fabric that has bound our fabulous Club together in stormy BYC days.

BYC WORK TOYS

Walking about the Club. Have you ever thought about the tin barge that is the work platform that themaintenance crew use to reach the tippy top of our shelters? The aluminum work skiff “Clemy”, the go fastvessel that transfers all the good stuff to the outstations for maintenance and the family weekends for foodand tents. The Minnie tug that spends its time huffing around the work barge. The knock off whaler that tendsthe sail students. The little black boat with the tow bar.

As previously announced, the Board of Burrard Yacht Club endorsed moving forward with the Clean MarineBC certification process.

We are currently executing a plan forward. A key milestone is becoming enrolled in the program. We havejust received our enrollment notice which is attached.

BYC has done well in the intital review of our Policies, Procedures and Programs however there are someareas that need to be addressed. So, In the coming months ahead there will be further communicationregarding the process and various BYC related improvement initiatives. We are striving for the 5 Anchorrating!!

As as you can see, BYC is joining a large community of marinas and yacht clubs embracing goodenviromental boating practices.

Clean Marine BC has 40 members, representing 32 certified marinas, yacht clubs, wharves, and boatyards, with another 24 facilities enrolled to be certified. You can find amap of CMBC enrolled and certified marinas on the Clean Marine Website

October Admirals Club Update

Our September event was our ever popular Annual Sip & Swap. We had a great turnout for the evening

and enjoyed food and beverage and browsing before beginning our guiltless shopping. The ladies brought

some great items and everyone went home with a few new finds to add to their closet. A great way to end

summer.

Our next event will be held on Monday, October 28. Our topic will be “Let’s Get Knotty” so watch for an

invite via Greenvelope shortly. We will cover different types of ropes, lines and knots with the session

being hands on and interactive. We’ve had several new members join the club lately so hoping to see

some new Admirals Club members out.

Ladies, please reach out to me if you or someone you know isn’t getting the Admirals Club emails about

events, and I’ll happily add you or them to our distribution list. ALL CLUB LADIES ARE WELCOME. We

have food, that is covered by your $5 fee and the BYC bar is open, both are charged to your account. All

you need to do is RSVP and then show up. The $5 event charge is based on registration as of 5PM the

day before the event, so we can plan for food.

I’m always looking for suggested topics for upcoming meetings. This is a group for you, so let’s deliver

what you want to hear. I look forward to getting your suggestions. Reach out to me at

[email protected]

Cheers

Kathy Gregson

Dear Editor,

The Notice of Meeting for the November 6, 2019 AGM has, under new business, a proposal to create a new designation ofmembership: Family Associate.

The Family Associate proposal reduces the full membership dues and work credit requirements that a current IntermediateMember would pay upon reaching age 26. In addition the Family Associate proposal awards lifetime outstation and cabinprivileges, something not available to the approximately 75 Associate Members of BYC.

Intermediate Members currently enjoy their choice of full membership or Associate membership, without initiation fees, uponreaching age 26. Paying full dues and contributing full work credits seems a fair exchange for outstation and cabin privileges, especially with initiation fees waived.

I am unsure how many members are aware that this proposal is in the works and hope this letter raises awareness.

Bob Thompson

Please see the article on the following page by Past Commodore Burns McLennan explaining the Board’s reasons for thisproposal.Ed.

If you haven’t already done so please reply to theGreenvelope that you will have received by email.

From the editor-

Another boating season come and gone. I hope you had a good one. It seems that just a few days ago theCommodore was declaring “The Boating Season Open”. I’m not happy with the speed which time is passing.Penny and I did our last trip on September 30th. An overnight to Clemy. We wanted to do itearlier but it was either raining or we were busy. The weather was cool and sunny. The dockswere empty when we arrived. Well not quite empty. There was a seal and some otters on thedocks and they weren’t even flying our burgee. The dock by the ramp definitely had thatperfume du otter about it. The night got very cold for west coast sissies and we were happythat our furnace was working. We had a peaceful and relaxing time.

I would love to hear your summer boating stories. I’m just a click away.
