looks after the production end of the B+3sessions. Monticana Enterprises havebeen responsible for the rise in popularityof many of the new Montreal talent. DaveLeonard notes that Ronnie Fraser, whoseColumbia distributed outing "Stop LookListen" was the first independently pro-duced session for Columbia. Also lookedafter at the Monticana studios was JoyceGermain's "The Beatles Are Coming" andthe newest Allied release by Jimmy Mannand the Dynamics featuring Ken Folk.

"Montage" a movie thriller producedand shot on location in Montreal has aready made audience waiting for the pre-miere. Reason: Montreal's most populargroup J.B. and The Playboys make theirfilm debut. From all reports the filmingwas a great success.

Zweibrucken, Germany: Cpl. Bill Brownof the RCAF pulled us out of the dark. Hisaddress was CAFE. We now know thisstands for Canadian Armed Forces inEurope. Bill also sent along a tape of theyoung country artist, also in the RCAF,Don Smith. Don has a good strong countrysound and with the popularity and ex-posure he is enjoying through his appear-ances throughout the Allied forces loungesrecord companies should start making theirpitch now. Another Canadian armed forcegroup becoming popular on the Allied mainstem are The Forerunners. Bill tells usthis rock group will be cutting a sessionin the not too distant future.

Canada: Stephen Kimber, teen writer forthe Halifax Mirror and prexy of Kim Enter-prises is nearing the end of his crosscountry jaunt. One of his distressing findswas the lack of cooperation of UpperCanada broadcasters in programmingplatters from outside their own areas.Maritime and Western broadcasters keepa wary eye on the action in Ontario andcould put up a strong resistance to UpperCanadian platters which would end up withmore short-sighted regional listings.Stephen adds "I hope some of the hit -makers of Ontario will get off their sit-downs and give chart rating to deservingreleases from any part of Canada so ourindustry can surge forward." Stephen isgathering info on his cross Canada tripfor an article on "The Canadian Sound"which will be appearing in a nationalpublication. Stations putting out chartsand listings should add Kim Enterprisesto their mailing list. Address is 3120Union St. Halifax.

Toronto: Arc Records announces the addi-2

tion of record industry veteran, RalphHarding, to the Arc Organization. Anotheraccomplishment for Arc was the appear-ance of Terry Black on the ABC TVer"Shin Dig". We were a little disappointedin not seeing him perform his smash hit"Little Liar".

Last week we mentioned that "ForestRangers", the ASP TV production, hadbeen picked up by a major US TV network.NBC Films of New York is the companyinvolved and this is their first 'first -run'colour television distribution deal in tenyears. Sales of "Forest Rangers" in theUS are now estimated at a potential inexcess of one million dollars, and hasbeen put in the same category as "Flip-per", "Wild Kingdom" and Disney's"Wonderful World Of Colour".

Canadian artists seem to be makingmore of an impact as songwriters thenrecording artists. The Kingston Trio haverecorded "Early Morning Rain" which waswritten by Ian of Ian and Sylvia. Chad andJeremy have included Gordon Lightfoot's"For Lovin' Me" in their new LP.

Ken Colman, Vancouver born Epic recordingartist has just released "A Great Big Hunk OfSummer".

Record Jottings: The big news in theCanadian record business has to be theacquisition by Larry Uttal, of Bell Re-cords, of Canada's latest and greatestreleases, "Sloopy". The record was re-leased in the US on July 16 and from allreports this could be one of the smashesof the year. If it gets the same reactionstateside as it is getting in Canada it'sbound to be a top-tenner.

The Capitol folks couldn't have had abetter time for their convention. Bigthings, nationally and internationally, made the usually go-go pressure of con-ventions, non-existent. Nationally, TheSparrows with their "Hard Times With TheLaw" are keeping the presses hot. Onpersonal meeting, if their performancedoesn't impress you, but it will, theirmannerisms and good clean approach tothe music field will certainly win them toyour side. Diane Leigh is also anothernational winner, maybe international bythe time this report reaches you, with her"Won't Be A Lonely Summer". For thosewho missed out on the original "BabyRuth", Capitol has released this hot itemby their equally hot group The Arrows.

The Esquires have recorded 3 oldies inthe hippy tempo and one original. Releasedate soon. "California Girls" was pickedoff the new Beach Boys LP and played byso many stations as a single that it willnow be released, as a single. Paul haswaited a long time but it looks like hiswaiting is finally going to pay off. TheHollies are starting to make the scene."I'm Alive" is now getting the nod state-side and in Canada. "Tiger In Your Tank"and "Lonely Boy" makes it two going forRobbie Lane. We like "Lonely Boy" butwith all the tiger excitement . . . whoknows? "Vancouver Town" is the flip ofthe new Rolf Harris "Tie My Hunting DogDown Sport". The Vancouver side wasrecorded in Vancouver and is reported tobe strictly of local interest, but again ...who knows?

From Victor comes "Summer On TheSand" by Montreal radio personality(CKGM) Bob Gillies. Initial reaction hasbeen good with it jumping on the CKPRchart at No. 56. "Oowee Oowee" lookslike another winner for Perry Como whichshould be joined by "Sugar Dumpling"by Sam Cooke and "Tickle Me" by Elvisfrom the movie by the same name. The"Vintage" series spotlights Earl 'Fatha'Hines with the Grand Terrace band. "Pap"was making the scene at the Grand Ter-race Cafe in Chicago (for 10 years). The16 cuts on this release were all recordedin 1939 and 1940 which was the wind-upperiod of the Hines Chicago era. Thisrelease should be of particular interest tojazz fans in Toronto where "Pap" recent-ly packed them in at the Colonial.

Lucille Starr could have another bigone for Quality. "So Many Others" isgetting the nod from charts across Canada. The prophet from San Francisco makesthis a "Record to watch". Richard Cham-berlain is shaping up to have a doublesided hit. "April Love" has been chartedfor over six weeks but now "Joy In TheMorning" is picking up attention. "I'llStill Love You" by Jeff Barry hit thevacation land of Muskoka - Parry Soundby way of CKAR in Huntsville and re-action had made it one of the most re-quested items at the station. "You WereOn My Mind" by We Five was written bySylvia of Ian and Sylvia and shows as abubbler on the US trades.

"Don't Just Stand There" by PattyDuke (UA) is making the Compo folksvery happy. U.S. trades and charts havegiven this newie approval and most Cana-dian stations have taken over from here.Pet Clark stays in the limelight as themost successful of femme artists withher "You'd Better Come Home". TheRoyal Family out of Edmonton releasedtheir first on Apex "I Told A Lie" whichcould influence the charts. The latestfrom Earl Grant "After Hours" has thatgrant touch that makes it a chart must.

Don Francks is giving New York theatreanother go. This time he stars in an off-Broadway show "Leonard Bernstein'sTheatre Songs". The show looks like it'sset for a lengthy run. Tickets have beensold out for two weeks in advance. TheTheatre De Lys has already experienced abox office record with this show.

Regina: Johnny Onnsends news of fantasticlistener response ontheir newest contest"Who's Singing In TheCJME Shower?". Lis-teners phone in and tryto identify the CJMEpersonality who is sing-ing in the shower. Re-sponse has been so greatthe CJME promo dept.will be trying more ofthe nutty funtests forthe summer season. Be-cause of the success of

The Honda Hop (June 29) the stars of theshow, Wes Dakus, Loreen Church, BarryAllen and The Rebels will probably bemaking the Regina scene regularly fromhere on in. They have established them-selves as the top Canadian draw for anyevent in Regina. The newest on wax byBarry Allen "It's Alright With Me Now"is fast becoming a chart topper. "Come OnDown" by Wes Dakus is also getting goodreaction. Johnny also notes that LoreenChurch, who had a fair-sized hit with "IWant To Stand Up On The Mountain" willbe on the hit path before the end of summerwith a release cut in Chicago. DianeLeigh's "Won't Be A Lonely Summer"has been picking up steadily in the Queencity and looks like a winner for the sum-mer charts. Another Canadian group mak-ing the chart scene at CJME are The Noc-turnals with "Because You're Gone".SylVia of Ian and Sylvia wrote it and CJMEpredicts it to be a chart topper. "YouWere On My Mind" by We Five has al-ready over shadowed many of the hits onthe chart. Says Johnny "Watch for thenewie by Dianne James, "The HandsomestOf Them All". A very commercial soundfor summer '65.

Sault Ste. Marie: Al Bestall notes achange to summertime format for CKCYThe theme is swing all through the night. The heavy concentration begins at 5.30PMto 7PM which leads into a 30 minutecountry show. "Hit Parade" from 7.30 to8PM and from there until 10 it's "YourChoice", strictly a teen request show andthen Barry Sarazin takes over to midnightwith his "920 A -Go -Go show. DebbieLori Kaye, the sweetheart of The Sault, has been getting the star treatment atCKCY with her Columbia hit "Picking UpMy Hat." Al also points out that Debbie'sdisc is showing up on charts at CHABMoose Jaw, CHNO Sudbury, WJJD Chicago,WEEL Washington, and WJIN JamestownN.Y. Her second release is planned forExhibition time (CNE) where she will beappearing. Another recording session isslated for the fall. Pat Bestall, PromotionDirector at CKCY writes "Never beforehas this market seen so many good Can-adian discs at one time and all o f themgetting a good reaction from the teens."CKCY recently programmed sixty minutesof Canadian talent on a Saturday afternoon.Records included "Too Blind To See"by The Brunswick Playboys, "Picking UpMy Hat" by Debbie Lori Kaye, "Sloopy"by Caesar and the Consuls and "Little

Liar" by Terry Black.Hamilton: Last week we published a

letter from former listeners of Bob Taylorwhen he was the teen spinner at CHOK inSarnia. This week we heard from Bob thathe just isn't ready for a desk j ob andwould like to get back to his first love, makin' with the teen sound. Check RPM"Editor" July 26 for one of the best re-commendations a radio personality couldget. If anyone is interested in getting alittle closer to Bob Taylor drop him aline at 565 Lakeshore Road, Sarnia,Ontario telephone 344-7682.

Toronto: CFTO-TV Channel 9 intro-

duces a new daily version of "TorontoToday" dubbed "Toronto Summertime"with host Dave Devall. This new thirtyminute summertime program spotlightspeople of interest from in and around theToronto area. Jack Carter, appearing with"Guys and Dolls" was slated to kick offthe new series but probably because ofhis uncalled for outburst of rudenessaimed at Toronto critics he was quicklyreplaced by star performers Hal Lindenand Janet McCall. Why take up space in their co-lumns to print the word 'radio' when it isnever mentioned?" Terry also refers toour remarks about no night rock for Torontoteenagers, and suggests that if Torontoteenagers want rock in the evening theyshould tune to 1350 CKLB and the RoscoCampbell show. A new voice for theOshawa area is Ron Morey who takes overthe midnight to dawn show.

Peace River: Chuck Benson is probablyback in the Peace country at CKYL andmore than likely getting down in print whathe thinks of eastern radio stations whodon't play Canadian content recordings. His honeymoon letter caused a stir but wecan almost lay odds his holiday letter willstir Upper and Eastern Canadians into see-ing red. We hope so. Sorry we missed thisgreat touter of Canadian talent when he

dropped in on RPM offices.St. John's: Jim Morrison notes that

Now We've Done It!!!The great search is onto discover who I am.Obviously I write thiscolumn under a nom deplume. I would put mylife in jeopardy not toprotect myself. Mean-while many young ladiesin the music businesshave been complainingthat they are taking thebrunt of the attacks atme ... as there is muchspeculation as too whoI really am. No amount

of expense has been spared to keep myidentity unknown. I have had a great dealof cooperation from the people at RPM,and my weekly column is mailed into RPM,and my secret meetings with the editor areso cloak and dagger, that even at the lowrate of pay, I find the whole thing asexciting as a cheap movie.

Search . . . speculate . . . enquire .but you will not find my true identity. But. . . we call them as we see them, andnames are not used only to protect theinnocent (and there aren't any of those inthe music business.) Keep those letterscoming. I love to hear from you.

Comment From A Little Girl: "I thinkI like 'Hang on Stupid' by Little Caesarand the Consuls is the best!"

Mike Jaycock of CKOC dropped EC aletter, and tells me about the all out Can-adian approach of OC. Handsome Mike isjust back from a very tiring honey moontrip. (Motoring is such a fatigue!) Every -time we hear from a DJ that tells us it'sCanadian All The Way, we enroll him inElvira's Canadian Touters Club as anhonorary member. Welcome Mike, and easyon the motoring.

Promotion . . . The Lack Of. I wouldlike to go on record as saying that withonly a few exceptions, Canadian recordcompanies are Lax . . . Lax . . . Laxwhen it comes to promotion and adver-tising. For too long, they have had a gravywagon that has kept imagination and flairin the background. A recent trip to (NewYork) gave me a lot of insight into whatpromotion and advertising can do. Thecompany Bigs I spoke to had very littlerespect for the sales figures that Canadacame up with, and the problem could bepromotion. It therefore stands to reasonthat the new Canadian artist must as wellbe the fall guy. The question is . . . Conyou make a hit??? and if it isn't a readymade hit . . . can you take it into charts-ville, If you can . . . you're a promotionman, but if you are but a delivery boy. . . rushing to stations with the latest"100 Climber", then you're not a pro-motion man.

Dealers complain about the Mountainsof printed matter that comes into theirstores in the mail every morning. It'sThird Class, and ends up in the wastepaper basket. Very little of if can have avery long life. It lacks originality. Nexttime your salesman walks into a storeearly in the morning, have him report onhow the Third Class items are handled.6

As pretty as they may be . . . They areseldom read.

What are you doing right now????You're reading my column in RPM. There-fore a few bucks slipped to Elvira willassure you of absolutely nothing!!! but ....a good record, and an effective promotionwill net you even Elvira's Free attention.

In past weeks we havebeen ever mindful of thereason for the successof the Fiench Canadianmusic industry. Themain reason for thissuccess is the supportthe French Canadianpublic gives its artists. The following letterfrom Key Griffin, YouthEditor of The StratfordTimes is further proofof this loyality. "DearWalt: With regards toRPM's Canadian content

percentages in a recent issue, you statedthat Quebec radio stations (English any-how) only programmed 21/2% Canadian. ButI'd like to tell you that P.Q's. Frenchstations must play over 30% Canadian. Iwas in Quebec city recently and my regularlistening was CKCV and I was thoroughlyimpressed with their charts. They playmainly French songs and these are nearlyall by Quebec artists and of good quality. But, as a bonus, they also play the bestof the English hits, including Canadianreleases, although all announcing is donein French. The French Canadian recordswere so good that I missed them on myreturn to Ontario. Why can't English Can-adian stations play the best of the Frenchrecords? Although several are just trans-lations of English and American hits, manyare original and worthy of greater coverageand they are CANADIAN.
