VFW POST 8118 VENICE, FLORIDA
TAMIAMI MEMORIALBy the Gulf
“There are no
strangers here...
...Just friends you haven’t met”
March / April 2016, #2
We lost a great person and our current chaplain, Vietnam Veteran and great friend Amedee Melanson, known by all simply as “Medee” on New Year’s day. You will be missed by all who knew you, RIP my friend and “brother”. It is hard to believe that 2 months have quickly passed in 2016. I hope the holidays went well for you, your family and friends. We have many things happening here at the post before our northern friends leave us to return home. The Post will have a St Patrick ’s Day party, Thursday March 17th with the corn beef and cabbage dinner from 4:30-7:00 pm put on by the Auxiliary. Great food, as always, provided by our Auxiliary!! Tickets can be purchased at the Bar for only $15.00. Entertainment will be provided by Spotlight, Gil and Rhonda and maybe some surprise guests. It will be a filling and fun night, so “b wearing yur green”!! On Weds April 6th we will have our Members, bartenders and volunteer appreciation day. $1.00 drafts all day, great food, raffle prizes and entertainment. A big Thank You to all who make Post 8118 a shining star in District 10 and the Department of Florida. For the next 3 regular post meetings, March-April-May we will be having a raffle, for anyone attending, of a $100.00 Ticket that will be entered at the VFW State Convention drawing in June for a final prize of $10,000.00. Come to the meeting and get involved. Post nominations begin at the March meeting and elections for Post officers will finalized at the April meeting. Come to the meetings! This Post needs volunteers for all functions. You want to en-joy the events, the great food and all but they just don’t happen by themselves. Spare a little time and contribute to your post, it won’t go unnoticed. Thank you for your support to Post 8118. Christopher Casey Commander 2015-2016
Spring is right around the corner. Easter is early Sun. March 27Th, so our Northern friends will be heading home soon. We wish everyone a safe trip and look forward to your return.
I want to thank everyone for the great turn out at our Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen Award Ceremony in Jan. It was a very special night for our winners. As the essays were read we all realized these young people are the future of our country. Patriots pen winners received 1st place $200, 2nd place $150 & 3rd place $100. Each winner received a certificate of achievement, an award medal, pin, pen, notepad, roses and an American flag. The Voice of Democracy Winner received $500 an award plaque, award medal, pin, pen notepad, roses and an American flag. Voice of Democracy winner also was 3rd place winner in District 10. Cake and soft drinks were served as we got to know our winners and their families. Essays and pictures of winners are on bulletin board in canteen. Thank you Ted for doing the calligraphy on our certificates.
Mardi Gras was a great success fun was had by all. Marietta Jones was crowned Queen and Bob Miller King so please treat them Royally. Thanks Amber, Roger and Brenda for the great meal. Rick and Pat did a great job with the 50-50 $190 to the winner. Decorations were awesome thanks to the decorating team. We were able to send $1000 to our Department President’s special project K9S for Warriors helping our heroes with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. Team work works.
Claire, Debbie Kay, Marty and I attended Midwinter Convention. We listened and learned a lot at the meetings. Please bear with us as we learn all the new rules and ways of doing things, as we become one Auxiliary. Our new Charter is hanging next to the old one in the hall. We now have 20 male members. Debbie did our World poppy display at convention you can see it at the Post. Great job, Deb.
