Assembling The 5 Kingdoms Foldable
The 5 Kingdoms foldable is found on the two pages
work best if they are printed back-to-back or two-sided.
You can also glue them back-to-back.
Fold on the inside vertical lines. Then, if you wish, glue the
foldable into a science notebook.

What Is Classification? Scientists look at living things and identify
their characteristics. They group things with
other things that have similar characteristics.
This act of grouping things by using a set of
rules is called classification.
Why Classify? ❖ Makes it easier to find and share
information.
❖ New discoveries can be related to other
things.
❖ Everything within a kingdom or class, etc.,
has some of the same characteristics.
Classification System from largest group down to a specific
species:
Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
Animal and Plant Classification Groups
Animal Plant Vertebrates (Have Backbones)
Vascular
Mammals: Have hair; produce milk for their young. Ex.: people, cats, dogs, horses
Have tubes. Found in roots,
stems, and leaves.
Reptiles: Have dry, scaly
skin. Ex.: lizards, snakes, turtles
Amphibians: Moist skin, no scales. Ex.: frogs, toads, newts
Fish: Live in water, hard scales, gills. Ex.: fish
Birds: Have feathers. Ex.: owls, robins, parrots, penguins
Invertebrates (Have no backbone)
Non-Vascular
Arthropods: Have lets with
several joints, hard outer
covering, 2 or more body parts. Ex.: Insects, such as
beetles, bees, mosquitoes. Spiders, such as black widow.
Have no tubes. Water must soak
slowly from cell to cell, Mollusks: May or may not
have hard outer shell. Ex.:
snails, clams, squid
Worms: No shell, legs, or
eyes. Ex.: tapeworm, earthworm, flatworm
Classifying Living Things
This page and the next give you an opportunity to see how the scientific
classification system works!
The first page identifies several living things and assigns a color to each
one.
On the second page, it is your job to classify by using smaller groups
following the classification system. In the rectangles that extend from each
of the classification groups, color in the colors of all living things that fit in
that grouping or write the name of the living thing. Each time you move
down the groupings, you will have to eliminate some of the living things.
You will end up with just ONE species (one specific living thing). You will
have the kingdom, phylum, class, order, family genus, and species name
for the living thing!
