The ISO 9000 Quality management system: a definition
ISO: International Organization for Standardization
ISO 9000-the quality management system: is composed of all the organization’s policies, and delineation of responsibility and authority, all deliberately aimed to achieving product or service quality levels consistent with customer satisfaction and the organization’s objectives. Those policies, procedures, and plans define how organization works and how quality is managed.

ISO 9000’s objectives
1. To ensure that products and services provided by registered organizations were consistently fit for their intended purpose.
2. To make registered organizations more competitive.
Comparative scope of ISO 9000 and total quality management
ISO and TQM are not interchangeable ISO9000 is compatible with and can be viewed
as a subset of TQM.ISO9000 is frequently implemented in a non
TQM environment. ISO9000 can improve operations in a
traditional environment. ISO 9000 may be redundant in a mature TQM
environment. ISO 9000 and TQM are not in competition.
ISO 4000ISO 14000 - Environmental managementThe ISO 14000 family addresses various aspects
of environmental management. It provides practical tools for companies and
organizations looking to identify and control their environmental impact and constantly improve their environmental performance.
ISO 14001:2004 and ISO 14004:2004 focus on environmental management systems. The other standards in the family focus on specific environmental aspects such as life cycle analysis, communication and auditing.
