Now that makes the comparison Apples to Oranges. Classroom20.com, Discovery Streaming vs. Safari Montage. By Shawn Wheeler, August 31, 2010 Information found through a Google search on Safari Montage ( website ( www.safarimontage.com/ ), Several journal articles favor Safari Montages video on demand services. Based on the information I can accurately say that there are basic content management areas that are definitely worth looking to improve upon. In addition, though not nearly mentioned enough, is the content which of course is pointing out the their specific video vendor collections available. Though Discovery Educations content is still the choice of favor, it is worth noting that this vendor has as wide a variety of quality educational content. Slide 17 Frontline news found through a Google search on Discovery Education, then going to educational journals, The Journal.com, DistrictAdministration.com, Discovery Education website and Classrom20.com. Results worth noting are: Discovery is very agile with their ability to quickly get new content online is great, the issue with bandwidth to bring their content into the district is still an issue. Classroom20.com, Classroom20.com, Discovery Streaming vs. Safari Montage. By Shawn Wheeler, August 31, 2010 We have had both Discovery and Safari Montage in our district. We started out with Discovery, and while we thought the content was solid, we struggled endlessly with delivery over the Internet, even though we had fairly high bandwidth coming in to the district. It was never dependable and our teachers were quite frustrated. Classroom20.com Discovery Streaming vs. Safari Montage. By Brandon Holt, September 1, 2010 Many on our staff have used Discovery in other districts and would agree that while Discovery has some great content, it lacks the management features, delivery system and content options that Safari provides. Classroom20.com Discovery Streaming vs. Safari Montage. By Aaron Gaskell, September 1, 2010 We have used Safari Montage for about 5 years in our district. We like it very much. We also checked into Discovery when we first were looking for streaming video, but at the time decided Montage better met our needs for variety and cost. Classroom20.com Discovery Streaming vs. Safari Montage. By H. Nelson, September 1, 2010 I use DE Streaming at school (United Streaming) and it is ok. Pros - Lots of topics, downloadable content, videos can be viewed in sections or in full, some have teacher guides. Cons - Videos are often a little on the older side, quality is not great for me, for every good video there is two or three bad ones. Classroom20.com, Learn 360 vs.Discovery Streaming. By Jonathan Wylie, August 13, 2010 I found that while DE may have more content, and their videos tend to be older. Classroom20.com Learn 260 vs.Discovery Streaming. By Dan Williams, August 16, 2010 Discovery Streaming (formally United Streaming) has been raising their rates dramatically ever since they were bought out by Discovery Education a few years back. Classroom20.com, San Luis Coastal EdTech Blog, Discovery Streaming vs. Learn360 by E. Jarvis, February 19, 2009 Slide 18 After competing competitive intelligence research for Discovery Education I can say with 95% accuracy their weaknesses are: Pricing structure: significant increase in the cost of leasing the Discovery Education streaming database. Bandwidth issues. Video quality issues (grainy view). Cant upload own videos. Lacks the management features. No podcast or live video features. Restricted on document type uploads. Videos are often a little on the older side: 50% of content has a copyright date 2000 or newer. District server price is $6,500+ higher then the three leading competitors Each add on product increases the cost Slide 19 Recommendations I can say with 90% accuracy that it would be to the advantage of Discovery Education to: reduce pricing structure and add on application prices. If not, sales will continue to fall, especially in these strict budgeting times. improve the functionality of the overall video on demand system by improving quality and adding additional features. include new features for more file format uploading options. Include podcasting and Live presentation productions for no additional cost. Slide 20 Summary Discovery Education is definitely the dominate player in the K-12 education video streaming vendor throughout the 1990s and through 2010. During this time period Discovery Education streaming clearly saw the future of digital video on demand and gobbled up the K-12 educational market ahead of its competitors. Then curiously, remained focus on its video on demand streaming content, while the competitors with their own superior content took the lead with developing a wider variety of options with in their content management functions for the K-12 market. Safari Montage, New Dimension Medias CCC! And Learn360 have turned (won over) 25% of the educational K-12 market. With the competitive intelligence provided it is apparent that your competitors looked for change in structural drivers. Your competitors have been most successful at anticipating the horizon of not only producers and suppliers of streaming media, but with content management needs and demand. They have led the way in expanding digital content management options to meet existing and future needs of educators. Discovery Education is still the number one preferred video on demand vendor with the reputation they have built up; competitors are encroaching in on your target market. The vendor matching yearly sales is New Dimension Media (CCC! Video on demand). The other competitors have strong market growth potential just with the content management options that are available. It is also important to note that there is 25% of the K-12 video on demand market that happens to think other video on demand vendors are worth investing their school funds with. Even though Discovery Education is still the number one preferred video on demand vendor, it would be worth acting upon what their competitors have already achieved with content management tools and options. In addition, it would be advisable to improve video quality that is becoming the most noticeable problem. The other of concern is cost for video on demand service; you can see that the competitors are even acting upon this issue by providing video on demand services for a lot less then what Discovery Education is. This is something worth noting in these difficult budgeting times with the target market. Unless changes are made, it will become apparent that the financial outlook will start a downward slope due to current customer market changing video on demand service; your competitors are knocking on your door!
