LOUISIANA PURCHASE

SIGNIFICANCE OF LOUISIANA

1812 Great Britain and allied Indians defeated U.S. forces in the upper Mississippi.

Louisiana Purchase was the acquisition by U.S. of 828,000 square miles of French territory.

The cost was 1,250,000 plus the debts which was worth 3,750,000 plus interest to where U.S. paid 23,213,568 for louisiana territory.

Since that was done, that opened up vast area of natural resources.

Napoleon sold it to the U.S. for pennies per Acer, and ended the period of French colonialism Midwestern portion of the land mass.

GEOGRAPHYLOUISIANA PURCHASE

Louisiana Purchase is located between Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. It stretches from Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian border.

• U.S. president Thomas Jefferson who had learned of the secret treaty of 1800, found himself dealing with the domestic outcry this caused as well as the danger of a French army arriving on the main land.

• In 1784 Spain closes Mississippi and New Orleans to foreigners

• Napoleon wanted to France in the new world

• Napoleon offered all of Louisiana to the U.S. for 15 million dollars.

• Lewis and Clark went into the territory to check it out for president Thomas Jefferson.
