Thesis:• Sparta and Athens were two powerful City-states that just couldn’t seem to work together.

Similarities:• One of the main ways they were similar was in

their form of government.

– Both Athens and Sparta had an Assembly, whose members were elected by the people.

– Sparta was ruled by two kings, who ruled until they died or were forced out of office.

– Athens was ruled by archons, who were elected annually.

• Athens is said to have been the birthplace of democracy.

Spartans:• Liked to Fight

• No literature (after code of Lycurgus)

• No Art

• Only kept best of best

• Soldiers

Athens:

•Philosophers and Artists•Loved life•Flourishing riches and culture•Golden Age

•Sparta seemed content to keep to itself and provide army and assistance to the other greeks when necessary.

•Athens wanted to control more and more of the land around them.

•This led led to war between all the Greeks.

•After many years of hard fighting, Sparta won the war.

Peloponnesian War

Historical Relevance• Athens was allowed to keep culture

after Spartans won the war

• Athens considered birthplace of democracy

• Athens made a lot of beautiful art and literature

• Spartans created “eye for an eye” laws
