  • It's exciting when Houston hosts events that attract folks from outside the state. No, I'm NOT talking about theSuper Bowl.

Rather, an gathering much more helpful to area gardeners: the 2016 Annual America Rose Society's SouthCentral District Convention and Rose Show. Hosted by the nation's largest rose society (Houston's, of course), renowned Rosarians will thrill and educatevisitors from across Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas and beyond with prize blooms, even more enviable bushesfor sale and the latest rhodology updates.

Think of this as a more visual column. I tried to select fewer pictures from so many varieties Baxter Williamsreported will be seen at the Fri.-Sun., Oct 21-23 show and convention. But I just couldn't do it. I loved them all andlooking at them is so very relaxing. They make me smile. As Emerson put it:

"...where round the damask rose / A thousand nameless Graces move . . . " The Houston Rose Society will host the Oct 21-23 American Rose Society's tri-state show/convention at theHampton Inn, 4741 East Sam Houston Parkway South, Pasadena.

In our Guest Commentary below, Baxter Williams shares tidibits on what folks can expect at this gathering.Baxter and Patsy Williams' Pasadena home gardens, mainstays of HRS tours, feature some 500 rose bushes. Ifyour eyes popped at the roses pictured above, which will be among those on display and in judging at the ARSShow, wait until you see all those below with Baxter's article!

    * * * MAKE ROOM ON THE KITCHEN COUNTER! Before you "feast" your eyes on gorgeous roses, however,Angela Chandler's Spotlight article is a great companion piece to this latest headline from Harris County AgriLifeExtension's GREEN TRENDS newsletter:

Kitchen Counter Gardening Leads Annual Trends List

Who else would tell you these things? The article points out that, as a group, "millennials" (born 1982-2002) wantto grow their own food, teas, cocktails, beer and medicine.

But, as other research indicates, they don't always have the space, time or inclination for traditional gardens. One sign: look for greater availability of indoor gro-lights in local nurseries! Not sure if this trend includes counter composting, but Angela says this is a option for both indoor kitchengardens as well as outdoor ones. Certainly would appeal to lazy gardeners! Angela's giving us a preview of herupcoming class: Indoor Composting for Outdoor Success, Sun., Oct. 1, 11am, The Arbor Gate, 15636 FM 2920,Tomball. Free, but register first at 281-351-8851 or arborgate.com.

    * * * SNEAKING IN THOSE NATIVES! Great Spotlight coming up next week on how to incorporate more nativesinto your existing gardens - with wonderful plant suggestions. This is a preview of the great information beingshared in the Native Plant Society of Texas - Houston's new Landscape Certification Program. The next 4-classseries starts Nov. 1. Everyone wants to compost. We all know composting is good for the garden and good for the environment. Butphysical limitations, space limitations, deed restrictions, schedule, the amount of available waste, a lack ofenthusiasm about turning the pile -- any number of things may limit a gardener's ability to compost.

Two ways everyone can compost - Vermicomposting and Bokashi. These methods:

Can be used in addition to an outdoor compost pile or as stand-alone composting projects.Don't take up much space, don't require any special equipmentDon't emit objectionable odors and aren't expensive, time-consuming or complicatedCan be done by everyone, even very young childrenCan be set up in the kitchen, utility room, or shady porch.

Vermicomposting uses compost worms to process kitchen waste. These worms live in the top layers of leaflitter in nature. All they need is a 10-gallon plastic tote, darkness, a little moisture, some bedding and regularfeeding to process food waste, dryer lint, paper waste, even hairbrush hair. They are quiet and produce noobjectionable odors. Best of all, their castings are nutrient rich fertilizer for your plants. Bokashi composting is a fermentation process sometimes called "pre-composting" that only requires a coupleof 5-gallon buckets. Food waste is combined with a special grain product called "Bokashi Bran" which isinoculated with yeasts and bacteria similar to those found in yogurt or other fermented foods. These beneficialmicrobes transform food waste into something similar to pickles or sauerkraut. The finished product is rich inbeneficial bacteria and nutrients to enrich garden soil and nourish plants. Universities, restaurants, and even entire apartment buildings now use Bokashi to transform their kitchen waste. You can Bokashi foods that are often banned from the compost pile such as dairy, seafood, eggs, meat, andbones. The indoor composting movement is fun, good for the earth and good for the garden.

    HOUSTON ROSE SOCIETY - houstonrose.com

Many of us began growing roses years ago. I was so fascinated with their colors and fragrances, it was easy to fall in love with the"Queen of Flowers." I have never regretted that choice, and look forward to each new opportunity to learn more about them. The variety choices that were available when I first became enamored have mostly gone away in favor of newer ones, but theirmemories linger on. Who could forget the beauty of a "Peace" rose, or the overwhelming fragrance of a "Mister Lincoln"? And wouldyou believe that those two are still available in your local nursery after 60+ years?

  • L to r: 'Peace' and 'Mr. Lincoln'

But what of the new ones? Are they fragrant? Colorful? Would I want one in a vase on the dining table at theevening meal? Rose specialists are coming to Houston Oct 21-23 to share their experiences and advances in roses. What aperfect opportunity to find out the latest advances in rose horticulture! Hybridizer Ping Lim will talk about exciting hybrids he has brought to market over the years and roses that soonto be in local nurseries. These varieties are mostly disease-free, easy-care and fragrant, roses a casualgardener can grow, but growers who "know" roses have much to say about their virtues. His "arsenal" of roses include "Love and Peace" (AARS 2002); "DayDream" (AARS 2005); "Rainbow Sorbet"(AARS 2006); 25 own-root varieties of "Easy Elegance®" roses; and "FlyingKiss" (Best Climber in the BiltmoreInternational Rose Trials). His pictures will really show you some of the future of good roses. Every marriage partner likes beautiful blooms in a vase on Anniversary Day. Those blooms will be on long stemsand, hopefully, have strong fragrance (and while I like to see a lot of color in the garden, roses for anniversariesare not likely to be "Knock Out.")

What wife would not be happy with a rose variety named for her? "Dona Martin" (left above) is an absolutelygorgeous Hybrid Tea rose that has captured the minds of many serious rose growers. (The real Dona Martin is acharmer, too.) ARS Vice President Bob Martin has a number of hybridizations to his name, the kinds that do wellin competition. "Butter Cream", "Peter Cottontail", and "Peachy Cheeks" are of the same quality as "DonaMartin", and are well-known to rose enthusiasts. To visit Bob and Dona's garden is to see great 400+ roses in a"happy" state. The Martin's magnificent rose bushes are full of exhibition roses, the kinds that sophisticated rosegrowers enjoy. Also on the agenda:

Dr. Larry Unruh, Technical Director of American Plant Food Corporation, who will recommends properblends of fertilizers to adjust fertility for various food crops and will share soil tests of our own rosegardens. He is former director of the Soil, Water and Forage Laboratory at Texas A&M University.

Dr. Alan Henn, specialist in diseases of fruit, home lawns, ornamentals and nematodes. We are all familiarwith blackspot or mildew, but Alan has analyzed other serious maladies. He will share with us solutions toissues that commercial rose producers have faced, and that might also become problems for our owngardens

NEWS FROM THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF SOIL AND

    PLANTS

A meta-analysis by the University Of Illinois College Of Agriculture (Soil Biology and

Biochemistry, 2016) has found that No-till systems had greater microbial biomass and activity

and higher enzymatic activity. This study confirms that the only time one should till is to mix

ingredients together in a new bed. The more microbes and the more active they are in the soil,

determines the health of the soil. This in turn determines the health of our plants.

In the July, issue of the journal Current Biology there is an article on how plants take risks. They

found that pea plants take gambles when it comes to root growth. They grew pea seedlings with

their roots divided between two pots that contained differing levels of nutrients. As expected,

pea seedlings with their roots divided between a pot with adequate levels of nutrition and one

with variable levels (sometimes high and sometimes low), grew more roots in the stable pots.

However, when the roots were divided between pots with consistent low levels of nutrients

and one with variable levels, more roots grew in the pot with variable levels of nutrients. In the

pot with consistent low levels of nutrients the plant would die, hence the plant took a chance

and put its energy into the pot with varying levels of nutrients where there was a chance it

could grow and survive. This is the first demonstration of an adaptive response to risk in an

    organism without a nervous system.www.cell.com/current-biology/home

The dangers of glyphosate (Round-Up) continue to be exposed, and is now being compared to

the pesticide Zyklon B death chemical that was used to kill millions by the Nazis in WWII. A

study published in the journal Entropy by P. Coleman, PhD of the Cornucopia Institute has linked

  • glyphosate to the rise in allergies, dementia, gastrointestinal disease, cancer, and a host of

other ailments due to the biochemical pathways damaged by exposure to this chemical. They

found that low-level exposure builds up over time in our bodies leading to chronic disease. One

of the methods it damages our bodies is by obstructing the synthesis of amino acids during

digestion, depleting amino acid reserves within the body and damaging the probiotic bacteria in

the gut. They also found that glyphosate depletes the body of enzymes it needs to detoxify

other harmful poisons, including pesticides and heavy metals. "The available evidence shows

that glyphosate may be the most important factor in the development of multiple chronic

diseases and conditions that have become prevalent in Westernized societies. The full study

can be found on the website: cornucopia.org

Note: The largest exposure to glyphosate is on GMO foods where the levels can be ten times

higher than conventionally grown food. Best yet is to eat organically grown food where this

toxic chemical is not allowed or grow one's own fruits and vegetables organically.

    BOOK REVIEW

As a soil scientist, I am constantly reading new studies about the microbes found in the soil.

These studies show that microbes affect or even control soil quality and plant growth. I am also

seeing more and more research linking the microbes in the soil to the health of animals and

humans. This book was a revelation about how important microbes are, from human health to

eco-system services. Ed Yong explains how and why microbes are essential for life on earth, and

why we should start viewing them as friends rather than enemies. He is an award-winning

science writer on the staff of The Atlantic. His work has appeared in many publications from the

New York Times to National Geographic.

Yong explains all about the different biomes we find in nature, from the microscopic to the

human body in an easy to understand, captivating and compelling manner of all things

microbiome. This book is a great way for any person to develop a understanding of the

  • importance of the microbes around us and how they protect us.
