    Where ideas work.

Today, Baden-Wrttemberg is regarded as one of the economicallymost successful states in the Federal Republic of Germany. Germanycomprises of 16 states, each with its own parliament and executivegovernment. Germanys federal system allows each state to take its owndistinctive approach in dealing with many policy areas, especially thosedealing with areas such as education, vocational training, scientificresearch and the economy. Browse a little further through our pagesto find out how we do things in our state. Almost casually, you willdiscover the attractive and confident state of Baden-Wrttemberg amodern region on the move.

    United: three regions

    merged into one federal state.

    Multifaceted: history, culture,

    scenery and people.

Unique: the only state in Germany

to have emerged from a referendum.

    Baden-Wrttemberg:Tradition and Modern Spirit.

Three made into one.Now were one of a kind.

Do you think that 1+1+1 could equal 1? Admittedly, this has only hap-pened once over 50 years ago in southwest Germany. At thattime a referendum was held, and 70% of those polled were in favourof redrawing the map and forming a single federal state. This was howthe three regions of Wrttemberg-Baden, Wrttemberg-Hohenzollernand Baden joined together in 1952 to form a single German state:Baden-Wrttemberg the start of a success story.

This merging of regions created the third largest state in the FederalRepublic of Germany, bigger than Belgium and with a population larg-

er than Denmarks. At that time, Swabians, Upper Swabians, Palatines,Franconians, Alemannics and Baden natives joined together. Thisgoes a l ong way toward explaining the cultu ral variety, di verse iden-tities and rich past, which Baden-Wrttemberg possesses. For cen-turies, the southwest was a mosaic of duchies, principalities, counties, imperial cities and bishoprics. Its modern geopolitical form datesback to the mid 20th century.

Such institutions also makeBaden-Wrttemberg a leader in sciences. Universities of CooperativeEducation and Universities of Applied Sciences are cooperating withindustry and commerce to offer an alternative to the university routein the form of practical training to the highest professional levels.

What would the world be like without bicycles, spark plugs, nylon,or cars? Practically unimaginable! Fortunately for Baden-Wrttem-berg, it has always been home to leading scientists, inventors andinnovative thinkers. Intelligence, creativity and daringness are the keynatural resources in a state which is lacking in raw materials, likeBaden-Wrttemberg is. In the last few years, our state has producedrevolutionary products like the airbag, ABS (anti-lock brakes), the dis-tance controller and the mainframe chip in CMOS technology. Thefull potential of our reserve of innovations and developments is stilla long way from being fully tapped. The Firerob, which is a modular,

remote-controlled robot, designed to fight fires under the most ex-treme of conditions is attracting great attention. The complex ATVpropulsion system for use at the International Space Station (ISS) isyet another outstanding technological success story coming fromBaden-Wrttemberg.

Technological development thrives in a state where a large number ofsmall and medium-sized companies are firmly established alongsidelarge, internationally respected firms like Bosch, DaimlerChrysler,Porsche and Zeiss. Small and medium-sized companies in particular, are being distinguished by their innovation and flexibility in an ever-tightening integration of the world economy. They are the indispens-able suppliers to the larger companies, exporting high-value products, and are in essence the driving forces of our economy.

Exploiting the enormous economic potential of the medium businesssector in Baden-Wrttemberg is a high priority for the state govern-ment. Roughly two thirds of the states workers are currently em-ployed by small and medium-sized companies which are producinghalf of our gross domestic product. That is why our state has made itan economic objective to promote the productivity and competitive-ness of small and medium-sized businesses. The state has establishedwell-funded and attractive business start-up programs, has imple-mented measures aimed at supporting vocational training and further, has assisted companies in entering new markets and has expandedtechnology transfer structures.

Close ties between science, research, and production; efficient use of

suppliers and service-providers and the proximity of the large con-sumer markets form an ideal basis for a generation of new ideas toconquer the world. Yet another compelling reason to choose Baden-Wrttemberg as your business location.
