Tis’ the season to be jolly and look back over the memories of this past year.

What a year it has been! First we had the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee followed by

the Olympics where Team GB did us all proud and our nation came together for

a tremendous display of national pride. The glow from the “Jubilympics” should

keep us all warm as winter takes hold.

Now as we settle down and prepare for the year ahead, local MP

Richard Benyon has provided us with a message full of confidence to

the residents and businesses in and around West Berkshire and North Hampshire.

We have introduced a new Business Focus feature with expert advice on

how to use the essential tools to grow and enhance your business. I would love to

know how it helps you and therefore, please email me your success stories so we

can share them with other readers.

There are two very interesting interviews in this issue. We speak to actress

and singer Maria Doyle Kennedy from Julian Fellowes’ “Titanic” and

”Downton Abbey” and find out how she is focusing on her music and new

album ‘Sing’ which was released on September 10. Adding a touch of celebration

to this issue is Graham Gouldman, the legendary 10cc singer, who shares with

Buzz the band’s successes for the last 40 years and how he became involved

with music.

Let me take this opportunity to wish all my readers and their families a

Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!

Happy 2013!

volunteering for education. . . experiencing learning from the other sideBy Liz maloney, change Blazer Ltd.

thirty business professionals stand in the school hall. we are all out of our comfort zone but this time, we are the ones doing the testing; we are here to conduct practice interviews with year 11 students.

In pairs, we settle into our allocated space as a group of confused pupils enter the hall. Our interviewee walks nervously over to us. He starts to describe why he wants to be an engineer and before long he has us 'hooked'. He is the first of many that day that restore the jaded faith that many business professionals have in young people. We meet aspiring chefs, dedicated medics and articulate sales people. Some of them clear in their goals, others looking for direction.

Today was an experience we shared and took positive learning from, and I, for one, will be doing it again very soon!

If you would like to become a volunteer and help inspire our future workforce, please contact us on 01635 279900 or email [email protected].

John A BoydTown Mayor of Thatcham

this year has been an exciting one for thatcham, and indeed the whole nation.

With the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics there was a feeling of immense pride in the nation. This could be seen as the torch relay passed through with thousands lining the route. It is my hope that the people of Thatcham continue to feel great pride in their town for the year ahead. I would like to extend a personal wish to the people of Thatcham for an enjoyable Christmas and ask that we remember those in our community for whom the Christmas period can be a lonely time.

Martin CraneTown Mayor of Hungerford

it doesn’t need me to remind you of what a fabulous year it has been for celebrations which have been enjoyed by all despite

the poor summer weather. hungerford also had its own unique diamond Jubilee when after 60 years of waiting, our pedestrian bridge across the K&a canal was finally opened.

as we approach the christmas season, thousands will come to enjoy and absorb that special hungerford welcome and look forward to an even better 2013.

Businesses across the country have had a pretty tough time in the last few years. we all want that to change. while there will continue to be turbulence in the eurozone economies there is cause to believe we might be in for sunnier times.

Companies are taking on more staff and investment is rising. In 2013 we should begin to see a rise in confidence amongst businesses and their customers. With the lowest business taxes, better broadband and the removal of red tape, businesses should be able to take advantage of new opportunities. Britain should be the best place to start up and run a business. Let's hope that 2013 is a great year of recovery for business across West Berkshire and beyond.

it has been a memorable year for the people of newbury.

In June, we celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and my thanks go to everyone who braved the weather to celebrate including the many who attended the event at Victoria Park.

Arthur JohnsonTown Mayor of Newbury

Then thousands lined the streets of Newbury to watch the Olympic Torch Relay. It was a pleasure seeing everyone come together to mark the event.

Christmas is a special time of year but we shouldn't forget those who are alone or in need. On behalf of myself and the Lady Mayoress, I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.

As with computers, viruses can pose a real threat to smartphones with the ability to make calls and access your details without you knowing, though they don’t affect every phone.

Currently only Android smartphones are effected due to the way the operating system is so open to any apps being installed and no review of apps on the Google Play app store. This lets anyone create and publish viruses within apps you download.

There are apps available to scan for viruses on the phone and protect you but the best and cost-free way to protect yourself would be to understand what you are downloading on your phone before you install it. If you don’t trust the app or email attachment, don’t install it.

We asked Buzz IT expert Trevor Fifield

We all know about the dangers

of viruses on our computers but

can our phones suffer the same fate?

How can we go about protecting

1. Keep a close eye on costs. It sounds obvious but some companies are so busy chasing sales that

the focus on cost containment slips.

2. Know where the money is coming from. Cash flow can make or break a business. Make sure you invoice in a timely manner and have

an effective credit control system.

3. continue marketing. Marketing costs are often cut when times are hard however it is a necessary cost. Make sure that you are spending money in the right way by closely monitoring your return.

4. customer service. Keeping your clients happy means that not only do they continue to use your services but they can also be your

greatest advertisement.

5. have a plan. You don’t always have to stick to your plan but to have aim and direction means that you are always continuing to move forward.

weddings

I loved working with Georgie. She arrived at our first meeting with a book of snippings of seasonal flowers and the overall relaxed country look she was looking for on her wedding day. Her colour pallet was 'the garden' creams, pinks, tonal blues, purple and green. We bound her bouquet flower stems in beaded tulle from the dress and added her grandmother's brooch for a touch of sparkle. I also sewed Alec's grandmother's wedding ring to the top of the tulle - no one but us knew it was there. . . it was a special secret to walk with her down the aisle towards her beloved.

Georgina Wilson married

Alec Jackman May 26th 2012

‘The day was the perfect blend of ’country garden chic’ I was hoping for. My beautiful dress and flowers complement the venue brilliantly. It was a glorious day full of very happy memories. I’m so glad I had some great help and advice to put my ideas into reality.

Georgina says

Georgina was keen to find a dress which was understated but full of glamour and elegance. For her petite frame, we looked at a number of fitted dresses which didn’t swamp or overwhelm her. She finally decided on a dress from Charlotte Balbier. Its champagne tones complement her colours and she loved the lace detail on the dress and sash. It had a real 1930’s look about it which went with her vision of the day but she kept it fun with her platform blue suede shoes!

Laura from Mrs Jones Bridal Boutique says

Georgina’s pale colours went beautifully together so a tiered iced cake in these tones was the perfect choice, topped with a delicate china teacup and vintage roses. Keeping the colours muted and the design simple meant that the overall look was soft and feminine and completely in keeping with the vintage feel of the day.

between each other and it all came together.

What are you doing as part of your solo career?I released an album “Love and Work” recently for the first time in 12 years. I took some time off 10cc and had some songs I really liked so I just got down and recorded them. I am very proud of the album and it is dedicated to Andrew Gould who I worked with during the 80’s in a band called Wax.

The current members Graham Gouldman (vocals, bass, guitar), Rick Fenn (lead guitar, vocals), Paul Burgess (drums, vocals), Mick Wilson (percussion, guitar, vocals)

Graham Gouldman, who has been with 10cc since they began in 1972 and wrote many of their well known hits, spoke to Buzz about his life in music.

and Mike Stevens (keyboards, guitar, sax, vocals) will be performing at the Hexagon Theatre, Reading, Friday 16 November and The Anvil, Basingstoke, Saturday 24 November.

How did you get involved with music?A cousin of mine brought me a guitar when I was 11 and I fell in love with it. I became serious about song writing when I was 19. The first hit I had was “For your love” with The Yardbirds in 1965 but nothing really inspired me to write. Sometimes I would just sit down with my guitar and start playing but I will continue to write because I love doing it.

How did you meet the original members?I met Kevin Godley in school and Eric Stewart and I shared the same agency. I met Lol Creme through Kevin because they were best friends. I don’t think we’ll ever all play together again but Kevin did join us for a concert at the Royal Albert Hall in May earlier this year.

What was your inspiration for writing "I'm not in love" (1975)?We didn’t want to write a typical love song and we had tried to avoid writing a love song all together at first. Then Eric came up with a wonderful title which set the mood for the song. We traded pieces

They were one of the most popular bands of the seventies having sold more than 30 million albums worldwide. With 11 Top 10 UK singles including “I’m not in love” and “Dreadlock Holiday”, 10cc are returning with a 28-date UK concert tour to celebrate 40 years in the music industry.

The season for parties and festive fun is upon us and even if you are only planning to go out for a simple meal with friends it is nice to have an excuse for a new pretty top or sparkly necklace, if not a whole new outfit.

evening gowns and party dresses are elegant and ladylike. They have that wonderful 'old Hollywood look’. Try fitted dresses to embrace your feminine curves or a bejewelled shift from the classic style of the silent movies.

V-necks are in and the deep scoop necklines can also be used to set off that wonderful jewellery. The most popular dress lengths are just above or just below the knee and this seems to compliment most women; but you will also see skirts draping softly to the floor. Rich classical colours feature strongly, like royal blue, red and magenta.

glamour and sophistication are the key words this year. Jewellery is opulent, bold, colourful and so feminine. necklaces are statement pieces with jewels and antiqued metals being trendy, so if you love vintage then pull out your old jewellery and have fun mixing

old with new.

Fashion

The little black dress (or LBD) is the quintessential cornerstone of any well rounded wardrobe and there are currently plenty of versions to choose from. The LBD is valued because it is timeless, versatile and never goes out of style. It means never having to worry about what to wear for a last minute invitation. It is simple and elegant and can make the transition from day wear to evening with just a change of accessories.

1. Will it work with a jacket or wrap?

2. Does the hemline suit you and will it date?

3. Will the dress work with a variety of footwear?

4. Does it have a neckline that allows for different styles of jewellery such as pearls or more modern trendy pieces?

5. Is it easy to care for? Beading & sequins are of course more delicate.

6. Does it need special underwear? Remember if you are going to wear anything that is figure hugging invest in the right shape wear. It can certainly help to `iron out' the lumps and bumps and smooth your silhouette

while giving you a real boost in the process. Then you can hit the town with style, glamour and confidence!

Here are some questions to ask yourself when shopping for that perfect dress.

A boy called Pip is sent to the mysterious house of Miss Haversham where he falls for a girl called Estella. After coming into good fortune and heading to London, he meets the girl again. What is the story behind her cruelty and his fortune?

It’s quite possibly the most highly anticipated film of the year. the hobbit: an unexpected Journey is expected to hit

cinemas in December and will take us right back to the beginning of the story. Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) sets off with a team of dwarves to try and claim back their treasure from Smaug, the dragon.

She played the evil Mrs Bates in “Downton Abbey", Queen Catherine of Aragon in “The Tudors” and soul sensation Natalie in “The Commitments” but now Maria Doyle Kennedy is setting her sights on what she loves most, making music.

The joy of making

Musical from the start

Maria had no musicians in her family but music was still an important part of family life, “My parents are of a generation that when they’d meet friends at parties they would all sing and it signified to me that music was something that brought people together.”

Despite attending Trinity College in Dublin to study Political Science and Business, it was the experience of college and the people she met that would benefit Maria the most, “I saw college as an opportunity to learn more rather than form a particular career path. I had always been singing but I hadn’t met anyone at school who was a musician. At college I met a lot of musicians and did what any aspiring musician would do, I joined a band.”

Maria went on tour, recorded albums and signed with several bands but it wasn’t until she set up her own record label called Mermaid Records with

The Dublin star is putting acting behind her for the time being to focus on her new album release ‘Sing’, which includes duets with Damien Rice and John Prine.

her husband in 2000 that she released her first solo album ‘Charm’. Maria says “There were several reasons I set the label up. One was I didn’t think anyone was going to give me a record deal and secondly I wanted to be free to make my own music.”

As well as recording, Maria also loves to perform live and has travelled all over the world. Earlier this year she performed in front of 50,000 people with Snow Patrol at Phoenix Park and has also performed at Glastonbury several times.

‘Sing’ is Maria’s fifth solo album on her own label and was released in September, “I think the songs on ‘Sing’ are joyful and I think we could all do with some comfort in the world at the moment. I’m pleased that’s what this album seems to be offering.”

Acting by accident

Whilst trying to build her career as a music artist Maria landed a role in a film called “The Commitments” (1991), “I saw a poster for an open casting call for

Doyle Kennedy

20

singers. I auditioned a few times and got the part.”

Maria’s favourite role was in the popular comedy series "Father Ted" in 1998, “We’re all such mad Father Ted fans in my house. It’s the only thing that’s ever impressed my children.”

Despite liking both film and television, Maria says “Television has got better parts for women over 30. It’s where the best writing is and there are some incredibly iconic women breaking through in TV."

Maria also visits the theatre in her free time and loves the excitement that comes with a live performance, “I’ve even done theatre in the past but I haven’t done any recently because it’s a long commitment. When I've been asked recently I've had to turn them down because I've had a few gigs further down the line. When you’re doing a theatre job it’s not like you can suddenly take a night off.”

Achievements

Maria believes ‘Sing’ is her best album yet. “I think as an artist you mature and you get better at what you do. People quite often don’t tell you but it’s quite an ageist industry.

It seems they want people to be making music when they’re really young but I didn’t know that much then.”

She adds “One of the things about making your own music and putting it out there is you put them out there for judgement and you need to be at a stage in your life where you don’t care about that.”

Maria and her husband Kieran, who is also a musician, married in 1988 after meeting through music and they currently live in Dublin with their four children. Maria says “In terms of life, I think surviving and getting this far with two artists being able to raise a family and pursue what we do is a massive achievement and I’d just like to be able to continue to do that.”

Maria’s advice for aspiring musicians is “You really need to have a huge passion to sustain you through the journey because it’s a difficult life and it’s very unstable. There’s a lot of rejection but the joy of making music is what sustains me.”

Singing has always been at the forefront of Maria’s mind, “I found that I enjoyed acting but I see myself as a singer who does a bit of acting. Singing is a personal expression of me whereas acting is playing someone using their words.”

Maria writes her own songs and often works with her husband. Maria describes music as a huge part of her life, "Even if I'm not recording I would be singing,

learning songs or listening to other people’s music.”

Now she is planning to do as much touring as possible with dates planned in Ireland, the UK, mainland Europe and New York.

Advice

No matter what you do, time is the only way to get alcohol out of your system and for this reason you could still be over the limit the morning after you’ve been drinking. Another of the biggest excuses given by offenders is that they were only travelling a short distance but a large proportion of drink driving offenses were committed within three miles of the start journey.

Don’t offer drink to those who are planning to drive and never accept a lift from someone who has been drinking. Even the smallest alcoholic drink will affect your driving making you less alert and cause you difficulty when judging your speed and distance. If you are planning to drink the best way to stay safe is to not drive at all by selecting a designated driver, hiring a taxi or travelling by public transport. Be aware that Christmas and New Year are busy times for taxi and private car hire companies and they may need to be booked far in advanced.

The festive period is a busy time of year, especially for the emergency services who see a rise in drink related incidents around this time of year. In 2010, 250 people died in accidents caused by drink driving and the Department for Transport’s THINK! campaign continue to make people aware of the dangers of drink driving.

Alcohol in your system can be tested through breath, blood and urine but despite set limits being in place, there is no sure way of telling how alcohol will affect you as the results differ from person to person. Factors such as your stress levels at the time, weight, age, sex, metabolism, what you have eaten recently and the amount and type of alcohol consumed can all influence how you will be affected.

The penalties

If you are caught drink driving and fail a breath test you will be

arrested. Maximum penalties include imprisonment, large fines and a possible driving ban. You may also face an extended driving test when you return to driving following your ban.

A criminal record is not the only thing that could affect you if you are caught drink driving. The cost of your insurance will increase significantly, your employer will be aware of your conviction and if you drive for work purposes you could lose your job if given a driving ban. This could also lead to strains on personal relationships and you may have difficulty obtaining permission to drive abroad not to mention the emotional effect on the victim, their family and yourself if you were in injure someone through your actions.

Christmas AlternativesFa ncy something different this Christmas? Try these different yet fe stive a lternative s.

Spice up the turkeyA Christmas curry is not something you hear often but why shouldn’t it be? Some people

can find roast dinners bland so why not serve your turkey differently in a mild or spicy curry sauce and swap cranberry sauce for mango chutney.

Different meatsThere’s no reason why turkey should be your meat of choice this Christmas with goose and beef also a popular favourite. If there’s just a few of you or you're a couple, try something smaller like duck and serve with Chinese vegetables such as Bok Choy or go for a seafood option such as salmon.

A veggie ChristmasIf you or someone you’re serving for is vegetarian there are still many options available. The most popular being a stuffed aubergine but you could also choose falafel madefrom chickpeas or portobello mushroom stuffed with blue cheese.

Last-minute

Traditionally Christmas cakes are made well in advance but if you haven’t had time try our last-minute version. As it makes two you can also give one away as a gift, and solve two problems with one recipe!

Ingredients

600g good-quality mixed dried fruits

150ml whisky, warmed

150g stem ginger, drained, plus8 tbsp ginger syrup from the jar

200g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing

300g plain flour

2 tsp baking powder

2 tsp mixed spice

200g soft light brown sugar

4 large free-range eggs

2 tbsp milk

Finely grated zest of 2 small oranges and 2 lemons

50g ground almonds

150g whole glacé cherries

Method

Put the dried fruits in a bowl and pour over the whisky. Set aside for 30 minutes to allow the fruit to plump up.

Briefly blend the ginger and its syrup in a mini food processor until finely chopped. Preheat the oven to 160°C/fan140°C/gas 3. Grease and line a 20cm square cake tin.

Sift the flour, baking powder and mixed spice into a large bowl and add the rest of the ingredients except the cherries. Beat with a hand-held electric whisk for 2 minutes until pale and fluffy. Fold in the soaked dried fruits and any whisky, the blitzed ginger and the cherries.

Spoon into the baking tin and level off. Bake for 1-1¾ hours (this depends very much on your oven. Some ovens are faster than others). If you’re

unsure it's recommended you check after an hour then every fifteen minutes after that, until the cake is firm and golden brown. To check, insert a skewer into the centre of the cake. If it comes out clean the cake is cooked. You can cover it loosely with foil after 1 hour if the centre needs more time. This prevents the surface darkening too much. Leave in the tin for 10 minutes, and then remove to a wire rack to cool.

Remove a thin slice from all sides of the cake and discard. Cut the cake in half to make 2 rectangles.

Top with marzipan and white fondant icing and decorate with a sprig of holly.

You’re more likely to “catch” a cold outdoorsBeing in the cold has nothing to do with getting a cold. In fact, the reason colds spread faster in winter is because people are more likely to be inside within close proximity to each other.

You lose the most heat from your headYour parents may have told you this one but whereas it is true you lose heat through any part of your body that’s not covered up, your head does not lose more heat than anywhere else. It’s more important to wear a good coat to keep you insulated.

You don’t need sunscreen in winterThe sun doesn’t disappear when we head into the colder months. Just because we can’t see it doesn’t mean its harmful UV rays aren’t present. Dermatologists still recommend that you wear a SPF of at least 15.

You should just put up with winter skinWinter often leaves us with dry and flaky skin but ignoring it can be worse. Dry skin can crack leaving you prone to infection so it’s important to stay hydrated by moisturising twice a day – after a shower and before you go to bed. Also moisturise areas that are prone to getting dry throughout the day like hands and lips.

Should I get a

Certain groups of people such as the elderly, diabetics and asthmatics, should get a flu jab but even those who don’t fall into the “at risk” categories should still get a flu jab as a sensible precaution.

The symptoms of fluFlu causes a high temperature, headache, pain, tiredness and a sore throat. You can also lose your appetite, feel nauseous and develop a cough. The best remedy is to rest, keep warm and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

You should see a doctor if you have flu like symptoms and you are 65 and over, pregnant, have a weakened immune system or have a long-term medical condition. If your flu is particularly bad you’re doctor may want to prescribe antiviral medication which can lessen symptoms.

Why might a healthy person request a flu vaccine? The flu virus changes every season so even if you’ve had the flu jab before you will still need one this year.

If you work with the general public, you’re more likely to be exposed to the virus. Flu generally requires a week or so off work so a business owner may consider the impact a week off sick would have on their business.

Children are much more likely to pick up and pass on bugs as they are in close proximity to each other

all day. For this reason teachers and parents might think it wise to have a jab.

Flu jabs are generally safe unless you have an allergy to eggs or have had a previous allergic reaction to a shot. Despite popular belief, the flu vaccine cannot give you flu as it doesn't contain the active virus needed to do this.

Boots and Superdrug have flu vaccination services available to everyone for a small price or if you are in an 'at risk' category you will be offered a free flu jab with your GP.

The flu or influenza is a very common viral disease and is not to be confused with the common cold. You can catch flu all year round but it is particularly common in winter and it is advised you get a jab between October and November.

even if they are not shivering, your pet can still suffer in winter conditions.

A dog's feet are not weather proof and snow can be especially harsh. Snow can build up in-between the dogs toes and cause irritation, cuts and tenderness. Granular or frozen snow is the equivalent to coarse sandpaper and is extremely abrasive on pads. Dogs often chew at this frozen snow, pulling out fur and in some cases chunks of their pads.

Icy or hard, frozen ground can be sharp making dogs paws susceptible to being cut and grazed as they slide across these rough surfaces. Watch for chewing at paws during long walks or periods of play. Always wipe your dog’s feet after a walk in the snow to remove ice, snow

melt and salt deposits from the road as salt irritates

paws and can be toxic if ingested during grooming which can cause kidney failure. As a preventative

measure, apply petroleum jelly on paws

to protect against cracks and scratches during cold months. The

extreme cold can also cause terrible muscle cramps for dogs which can be very unpleasant for them.

Do not allow your dog to run onto icy ponds, lakes, rivers or canals.

Every year many dogs die by falling through ice and drowning and some owners die trying to rescue them. Keep your dogs on a lead while passing iced over waterways.

Even icy puddles should be avoided. During the winter, puddles are easily polluted with antifreeze which is highly toxic when ingested.

Remember that during the winter all our animals, dogs, cats, rabbits still need to be wormed and have the appropriate flea treatment.

l Exercise your dog three or four hours before the fireworks start. Do anything you can to help your dog release energy so they’ll be tired later.

lFeed your pet a nice big meal an hour or two before the fireworks start. Your pet

will feel more relaxed on a full stomach.

lMassage your dog half an hour before, including their head, neck, spine and legs.

lKeep pets inside the house.

lMake sure all their ‘safe’ places are accessible and comfortable, whether it’s under the bed, under a table or in their cage.

lIf the fireworks are particularly loud or if you are hosting the fireworks then try to find a friend who can care for your pet during that time.

lSpend quality quiet time with your pet after the fireworks are over. Though the above will help, they will still feel stress and need to know from you that everything is fine.

Bonfire night can be a great way to celebrate but for pets it’s often a very stressful time. here are some tips on how to keep your pets calm.

Safety this

Around Christmas and New Year people are busy preparing for events and shopping for presents. It’s easy to overlook the things that could ruin your Christmas. Make sure you’re doing all you can do to prevent them from happening to you.

Don’t get caught out in the cold

As we head into winter many of us will have switched to our winter wardrobes but a woolly jumper and coat can only get you so far if you get stuck outside in the cold. Getting a winter service on your car can at least see to the main issues that may arise. Kit your car out with de-icer, a shovel, a pair of wellies and winter wear as a good precaution. If your car does breakdown make sure you have a charged phone with the number of your breakdown cover.

When you get in from the cold you would hope that your home was a hub of heat but with the extra strain on your boiler it also makes for the most common time of year when your heating stops working. It’s a good idea to get your boiler checked before it gets colder and keep

the number of a local boiler engineer by the phone.

Don’t let Christmas go up in flames

Not everyone likes Christmas lights but the last thing we’d want is to see them on fire. Don’t overload plug sockets and check for hot plugs, flickering lights, fuses that blow frequently and damaged wiring. Turn off all electric when you’re out and before you go to bed.

Electric blankets and heaters provide us with additional warmth but it’s important to check these regularly for any damage and scorch marks. Always buy electric blankets new and let them cool down before you store them away. Place heaters away from fabric and at least three feet away from yourself.

Under lock and key

With all your Christmas presents on display it’s an inviting signal for

burglars. You can buy timers that will switch your lights and radio on and off at pre-determined times, giving the impression that someone is in the house.

If you own more than one car park it in the driveway or ask a neighbour or friend to park theirs in the driveway every so often. Turn the ringer volume down on your home phone so no one can hear that it isn’t being answered.

Lastly, check that you’ve locked up properly and that all windows are closed. Make sure your Christmas is a happy one.

These seem unthinkable but

in the last few years A&e

departments in the UK have

seen cases like these:

lElectrocution caused by

watering the Christmas tree

with the lights on

lBroken arms from opening

Christmas crackers

Did you know that over 50% of rubbish in the average dustbin could be recycled?

Over the next few months you’re going to be building up quite a collection of bottles and food packaging but don’t let your recycling habits slip just because you have got a lot more than usual. You may even want to have a complete clear out in preparation for the new year and there are many things which can be recycled instead of thrown out.

Buzz has compiled a list of a few everyday items that can be recycled or exchanged. You can also donate some of these items to your local charity. Remember to always contact your recycling centre first to see if they can recycle a particular item or material.

cLothesYou shouldn’t just donate clothes to second hand shops but buy from there too. Vintage is really fashionable at the moment and can save you loads.

moBiLe phonesThere are many websites offering a good deal for your old mobile. Try www.envirofone.com or www.mazumamobile.com.

Brita water fiLtersBRITA cartridges are 100% recyclable and you can find out where to recycle them atwww.brita.net.

stamps and foreign coins

These can be donated to charity shops like Oxfam who collect them to be sold.

BatteriesSome shops such as The Co-op have boxes where you can put batteries. Also, some garages, recycling centres or scrap metal facilities may accept car batteries.

BooKsThe glue used to bind books prevents recycling but you can still take books to book banks or you could sell or exchange books on websites such as Bookmooch.com or Fatbrain.co.uk.

Deck the

There is nothing more special than a family day out collecting pine cones and seed heads, then returning to the garden to cut long lengths of Ivy to wrap around the spindles on the staircase whilst humming “Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly”. The word ‘deck’ in the title is of course referring to the verb meaning ‘adorn’ and entered the language from the Dutch word ‘dekken’, meaning ‘to cover’.

Both Holly and Ivy will last a week or so without water when cut and brought into the house (longer

still if its cooler), but other foliage will require some moisture.

The easiest way to make your own table decoration is to take an old 6 inch terracotta pot and squash a wetted piece of green oasis inside. Place a church candle centrally and add in cut pieces of Holly, Ivy and other evergreen leaves, as well as berries such as Holly and Cotoneaster. You can even add in pine cones (scented with a few drops of festive scented oil) or push in a couple of Cinnamon

sticks. Do make sure you place it on a level saucer or similar, keep it moist and don’t let the candle burn too low (remembering never to leave a lit candle unattended).

other festive ideas to do this month:

l Use excess trimmings from the Christmas tree to make a wreath

l Plant up a colourful festive pot for outside your front door,

and why not add some battery operated lights

l ensure your Poinsettia is placed out of cold draughts

Whereas some of us go a little crazy with Christmas, tying tinsel to every banister, decorations hanging from the ceiling and lights covering the outside of your home, many of us prefer real ‘trimmings’ wherever possible.

the atrocities the country and its people have endured.

Maria also gives her own personal memories of happier times in her once-beloved home.

My Animals and other FamilyBy clare Balding

Clare’s coverage of the London olympics has been highly praised across the UK but in this carefully collated account Clare Balding returns to her roots.

The award-winning British broadcaster and writer did not have the average childhood. A daughter of a champion trainer, Clare grew up with animals including 100 thoroughbred racehorses, mares, foals and ponies. In her very first book, Clare tells the story not just of her life

but of theirs and how they taught her about what’s important in life.

Clare was riding horses from a young age and can still remember the animals by name as well as their own unique personalities and how they shaped her and her brother's lives. She tells of her adventures in the stables and life in the idyllic Hampshire Downs.

We have one copy of each to give away. Go online at www.localbuzzmagazine.com to enter our a good read prize draw.

Clare became the face of BBC’s racing coverage in 1998 and now works across a wide range of sports for television and radio.

Published by Viking in hardback - £20. Also available as an eBook at £9.99, an abridged audiobook CD (read by Clare Balding) at £20 and an unabridged digital audiobook (read by Clare Balding) at £16.99.

A brief history of

Newbury has a rich and varied history and has gone through many stages of development to become the town we now know.

Originally a gravel swamp, there are only two remaining medieval buildings; Donnington Castle (founded in 1386) and Litten Chapel (founded 1215). Then in the early Tudor times Jack of Newbury, a great entrepreneur,

made Newbury temporarily one of the great cloth making centres. Jack also rebuilt the St Nicolas Church making it (with Shaw House) one of the few remaining Tudor buildings in Newbury.

After Jack’s death, the cloth industry gradually declined and it became a communication centre. Newbury is midway between London and Bath and so many coaching Inns were built. Members of the royal family, Lord Nelson and the Duke of Wellington have all stayed in Newbury on their travels. The Wharf also made Newbury into an inland port.

During the Victorian period, the railways were introduced and Newbury was suddenly cut off as Didcot became the

new route of travel. Within weeks the communication industry in Newbury collapsed so Newbury reinvented itself as an agricultural centre keeping cattle and corn, and as an engineering and industrial centre.

Keeping Newbury’s character

Vice Chairman of the Newbury Society and Deputy Mayor of Newbury, Anthony Pick is passionate about keeping the character of Newbury alive as well as making Newbury a more modern place for residents and tourists. He believes the historical buildings of Newbury hold the key to connecting the past with the future, “What I want to put across is the great importance of keeping the character of the town, a precious thing that is easily destroyed and easily neglected. You can destroy it by unsuitable developments and you can neglect it by not giving it a modern day use.”

The Newbury Society is Newbury’s civic society, concerned with the amenity, heritage, and well-being of the town. To find out more about the Newbury Society and their work go to http://www.newbury-society.org/
