Saety is one o the most important considerationswhen buying a amily vehicle As you shop or yournew car yoursquoll want to become amiliar with avail-able child saety eatures Te saety eatures listedhere are designed to help reduce the risk o chil-dren incurring crash-related injuries and other vehicle-related injuries such as those posed by cer-tain types o power windows

Keep in mind that some saety eatures listedhere are required on all 2010 model vehicleswhile others are available only on select vehicles

as either standard or optional equipment TeldquoChild Saety Features by Model ndash 2010rdquo chartswhich begin on page 8 o this booklet will helpyou locate vehicles that include specific child pas-senger saety eatures

However itrsquos important to remember that no saetytechnology can replace the need to monitor chil-dren when they are in and around motor vehi-cles mdash or the need to see that your child passengersare saely buckled up at all times Statistics showthat children are much less likely to be seriously

injured in a crash i they are properly restrained

In act the most important saety precaution a par-ent or caregiver can take is to secure child passen-gers under 13 in size- and weight-appropriate childrestraints or seat belts mdash in the vehiclersquos rear seatIn the pages o this booklet yoursquoll find inorma-tion about eatures that can help ensure your littlepassengers are properly secured every trip everytime

Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children

(LATCH)

LACH is a system that makes child saety seatinstallation easier mdash without using seat belts Howdoes the LACH system work Anchors on aLACH-equipped vehicle are used to install a childsaety seat equipped with LACH attachmentsMost LACH-equipped vehicles have anchors inthe right and lef rear seat positions

I the center seat doesnrsquot have anchors you canstill install your child saety seat using a seat beltI your vehicle isnrsquot LACH-equipped use the seatbelt and i available a top tether to secure yourchildrsquos saety seat Te LACH system is requiredon child saety seats and vehicles manuacturedafer September 1 2002

Since LACH has been required saety equipmenton new vehicles since 2002 you wonrsquot find a listingor LACH-equipped vehicles in the Child Pas-senger Saety Features charts However you will

Rear Center-Seat Lap and Shoulder Belts

Lap and shoulder belts provide better crash pro-tection than lap belts alone In 2004 NHSA pub-lished a final rule requiring that all rear-designatedseating positions (other than side-acing seats) beequipped with lapshoulder seat belts by Septem-ber 1 2007 Tis has made vehicles equipped withrear center-seat lap and shoulder belts widely avail-able which especially benefits older children andchildren in booster seats who ofen ride in thisseating position

Adjustable Upper Belts (Rear)

Because seat belts must fit people o various sizes

including older children some manuacturersoffer an adjustable upper belt anchorage that letsyou change the position o the shoulder strap toaccommodate a personrsquos size and improve shoul-der belt fit Check the manuacturerrsquos instructionsto correctly adjust the seat belts in your vehicle

Built-In Child Safety Seats

Some manuacturers offer built-in child saety seatsthat are designed to restrain children at least 1 yearold and over 20 pounds Specific weight and heightrequirements may vary check with the vehiclemanuacturer or details Since the introduction othe LACH system which was designed to makechild saety seats easier to install only a very smallpercentage o manuacturers offer this eature soyou wonrsquot find this saety eature listed in the ChildPassenger Saety Features charts Check with yourdealer or manuacturer or more inormationabout vehicle models that include built-in childsaety seats

Manual Air Bag On-Off Switch

Vehicles with no rear seat or a rear seat that is notappropriate or a child saety seat may have a switchthat lets the driver control the ront-seat passenger

air bag Te switch has a warning light that mustbe clearly visible to all ront-seat passengers to letthem know when the air bag has been turned off

Inants and children riding in the ront passengerseat can be seriously injured mdash or even killed mdashi the air bag deploys However we recognize thatthere may be occasions when a parent or caregiverhas no other option than to place a child in theront passenger seat such as

In a pickup truck or sports car with insufficient1inadequate or no rear seats or

I a parent is transporting too many children2or all to ride in the rear or

I a child with a medical condition requires3monitoring and the driver is the only availableadult in the vehicle

In such cases where transporting a child under age13 in the ront seat is unavoidable the air bag on-off switch should be set to the OFF position

I you have children and are shopping or a amilycar yoursquoll want to first check to see that your childsaety or booster seats are compatible with the vehicle Review the ollowing compatibility inor-mation ease-o-use ratings and child saety andbooster seat usage chart to make sure your new vehicle and saety seat will work together properlyto protect your child in the event o a crash

Vehicle Compatibility Considerations

Not all child saety seats can be installed in all

vehicles and in all seating positions With so manymodels o child saety seats more than 300 modelso passenger vehicles and the wide range o seattypes and belt systems available today correctlyinstalling a child saety seat can be a challenge Seepage 3 or inormation on LACH

Vehicle design actors that can affect child saetyseat placement include two-door vehicles smallrear seats deep bucket seats the slope and con-tour o the rear seat splits in bench seats orward-anchored belts and pickup truck jump seats

can help prevent injury to older children by mak-ing adult-sized seat belts fit properly Te adult lapand shoulder belt should fit the child snugly with

Read the vehicle ownerrsquos manual to be sure youunderstand how to use the seat belt correctlyand remember the ollowing

Te lap belt should fit low over the childrsquos

upper thighs when the child is sitting straightagainst the vehicle seat back Te childrsquos kneesshould bend naturally and comortably overthe edge o the vehicle seat

Te shoulder belt should stay on the shoulder

and lie against the childrsquos chest Never put theshoulder belt under the arm or behind thechildrsquos back

A lap-only belt (without a shoulder belt)

should be used to restrain a child only i noother seat belt system is available I you musttransport several children in a vehicle thathas a lap-only belt in the middle rear seatand one o the children is in a rear-acing ora convertibletoddler child saety seat ollowthese guidelines
