About Blas This year Blas na hEireann celebrated our 10th anniversary. In the past 10 years the awards have grown to be the biggest competition for quality Irish produce on the island of Ireland. Over 2,500 entries were entered into the competition to win Gold, Silver and Bronze awards in over 130 categories as well as key awards such as Supreme Champion and Best Artisan Producer.

A trusted accreditation and mark of Irish quality Research has shown that the Blas accreditation has the highest recognition amongst Irish consumers and using the award logo on packs encourages shoppers to buy these products. It is their guarantee of a top quality Irish product.

Our JudgesOur judges come from a range of food backgrounds; they are chefs, restaurateurs, academics, journalists, authors, food champions, caterers and enthusiastic home cooks. Retailers with a vested interest or producers who have entered the competition are never involved in the judging process.

Finding the very bestDeveloped with UCC and the University of Copenhagen our judging process is now recognised as an industry ‘gold’ standard worldwide. Products entered are blind tasted and competition is extremely tough, and regardless of the number of entries there are only five finalists in each category.Blind tasting means that all packaging and identifying features are removed from products before being presented for judging. This creates a level playing field for products from both large and small producers.

10th AnniversaryWe were thrilled to celebrate Blas na hEireann’s 10th anniversary this year, in addition to the awards ceremony our events have grown to include the Showcase Marquee, a shop-floor display of all finalists for the buyers and press in attendance and networking events with over 450 finalist companies. This year we also included masterclasses and workshops exclusively for finalist producers and a brand new venue, The Backyard at Blas, a dedicated space for finalist producers to meet.

“Shane was an inspiring force in the Irish Food Industry, he really was a true champion for Irish producers, with his business acumen, his passion for the Irish food industry combined with his down to earth and affable nature, he was determined to help producers showcase their talents both at home and abroad and he did this with great success. In his relatively short life Shane achieved a lot, but he also helped many other’s achieve so much more than they could ever imagine, which is a real testament to his character, with many agreeing that Shane was always the one who would be willing to lend a helping hand and go above and beyond for others. We are immensely proud of Shane and all that he achieved throughout his life and for him to be honoured in such a way by his Blas family really is a fitting tribute to a wonderful son and brother, he was and continues to be a true champion in every sense of the word.” The McArdle Family

Shane McArdle’s family receiving a posthumous Producers Champion award at a private event at the Blas na hEireann Irish Food Awards in Dingle, Co. Kerry. He was an irreplaceable member of the Blas family. He passed away on the 3rd of October 2016. The Best in Ulster award has now become the Shane McArdle award in recognition of his work for producers.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Blas na hEireann we created The Backyard at Blas. The Backyard is a dedicated space for producers to meet their industry colleagues, gain knowledge & find support for their business.

We were delighted to be joined by an interesting and informative line up of speakers who shared their experiences to help producers develop & grow their business

The space was exclusively open to hosted guests, buyers, trade, press and finalist producers. It was a busy venue on the weekend of the awards as people used the venue to make new contacts and catch up with old friends.

Backyard at Blas” was a new innovative breakout space and networking venue at the Awards. We saw many Irish producers visit the space, negotiate and complete deals. Many also said that they took away valuable lessons from the eight workshops over the two days. These workshops featured panels with industry leaders and experts. The food producers that attended mentioned that they wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet so many key people at one event and in one room if it wasn’t for this space, which was great feedback to receive.”

His conversation with Birgitta Curtin, Burren Smokehouse and Daniel Emerson, Stonewell Cider discussed why you should look to your competitors in the industry as your colleagues.

BE SOCIALA 20 minute MASTERBlasT of social media tips with the #Blas2017 Twitter Fairy, Sharon Noonan aka @Queenoforg (it’s short for organisation!) alongside Luke Burgess, Bean in Dingle and Zack Gallagher, Irish Food Guide. A concise and current look into social media with tips on how to create inspiring material, time-saving tips and strategic tools to capitalise on the opportunities that social media can generate for you, your business and your award winning products. It’s a no-brainer. Social media costs nothing but your time and it pays off. Don’t be scared, get social.

THINK IT THROUGH….Hosted by Drew McIvor (Invest NI) panellists included Maria Stokes (Bord Bia), Ann Dunne (Harrods), Dermot O’Connell (O’Connell Retail) Graham Clarke (Workbench Manager Galway). An information look at how a producer needs to present to a buyer, to know their category and how best to research and be prepared.

PRESS ON WITHOUT PRESSURE…The temptation in business is always to say yes to too many things and end up running out of product and or/steam. This session was a useful discussion on how to scale up your business sensibly and sustainably. It focussed on how to finance growth as well as pinpointing potential grant options. Slow and steady wins the race. Hosted by John Doyle (Bank of Ireland) and joined by Owen Clifford (Bank of Ireland) and Tom Banville (Wexford LEO).

BE READY TO SHOW YOUR BESTYou can’t just rock up at a trade show and hope for the best. You have invested time and money in getting there, but you need to know what to do when you are at your stand. Artie Clifford spoke to Patrick O’Sullivan (National Crafts Fair) and David Henderson (Henderson Food Machinery) to get hints and tips on a successful sales plan and managing and achieving realistic targets. They also looked at potential snags and hidden costs.

past few years, with a large number of new entrants coming into

the market in response to changing consumer habits and exciting

developments in the industry. This has diversified the sector

significantly and led to an increase not only in food products in the

CONVERSATIONS IN THE BACKYARD

GET YOUR STORY STRAIGHTIf you can’t get your story across, you can’t sell your product. You need to be able to catch a journalist’s attention and know what they are looking for. It is devilishly difficult to get coverage these days but knowing what the media looks for is half the battle. So, too, is responding quickly to their requests and not badgering people. There is a world of difference between being dogged and being pushy.Dee Laffan interviewed Gillian Nelis (Sunday Business Post), Joe MacNamee (Examiner), Mark Morgan (Shelflife) and Tony Frawley (Vision 2020) in an honest and lively conversation.

DON’T TAKE IT FOR GRANTEDSo many businesses are sticking their heads in the sand. Barring seismic political change, Brexit will happen and it will have a major impact on how you do business. Brian McDermott (NWRC) chatted to Mary Daniels (WebPort Global), Paddy Savage (Intertrade), Tom Banville (Wexford LEO) as they looked ahead to the challenges Brexit will bring along with potential opportunities.

MIND YOURSELF AS WELL AS YOUR BUSINESSBurnout is a common problem in business, especially with self-employed small producers. This diverse panel included Maria Moyhnihan (Irish Farmers Journal), Susan Steele (SFPA), Trevis Gleeson (Chef & Author), Mike O’Shea (Antarctic Explorer & Entrepreneur) and Shane Finn (24 Marathons in 24 Days).Sharon Noonan hosted the panel as they talked about striking the right balance between work and play.

Top tips against avoiding burnoutWhile it might be easier said than done - especially if you are self-employed and the buck stops with you - try to stick to your office hours as best you can rather than bringing home work with you, take your lunch break and have a cut off time in the evenings for answering work emails etc.

If you spend a lot of time working alone, try to find a hobby that is completely different to what you do from 9-5 and allows you to meet with other people and let off steam. Running with a club ticks all the boxes for me in this regard, but it could be anything from joining an art group to a choir. We are so much more than our jobs and it is important to nourish those other sides of ourselves

Know your boundaries and don’t be afraid to say no. So often we do things that are of no benefit to us for the sake of people-pleasing and are afraid people will think badly of us otherwise. On the contrary, I believe that people will respect you more when you respect yourself.

If you are struggling, don’t be afraid to seek support, whether it’s through a job coach, mentorship programme or counsellor. It can be hard to figure all this stuff out by ourselves-often a neutral outsider can see things that we don’t and help us to set priorities and a plan to see them through.

Have fun: if you are not enjoying your life and the fruits of your labour, then something needs to change. It can sometimes seem like a big effort, but a date night with your partner or meeting with friends etc. grounds us in what is actually important. We work to live, not live to work.

Artie ’s thoughts on planning for The Backyard at Blas “The Conversations in the Backyard focused on a number of aspects of the

business ranging from how best to maximise press opportunities to what

resources are available to prepare a Brexit strategy. However, it was also

important to us to discuss more of the personal side too. As we work with

producers day to day we see how many are small businesses, family run

or one person operations. We see how producers struggle to balance the

business and life. We wanted to talk about striking the right balance.”

How to prep for a buyer meetingDermot from O’Connell Retail advised producers on the questions you need to have answered before a meeting with a buyer:

• Market size and performance for the (growth, decline?)

• Highlight channel, category, consumer and product trends relevant to the product you are listing.

• Why this product?

• Are you producing or outsourcing? What production standards are in place? BRC, IFS, etc.?

• What is the products opportunity for me as a buyer? Additional sales, enhance margin, attract new customers? allow a point of difference versus competition,

• Why do you want to list the product within my organisation?

• Who else are you listed with?

• Outline the products USP’s?

• Do you have a product development plan? Phase 2? Phase 3?

• Who’s your competitor, how do you differ? Why does this matter?

• Are you delivering direct to store or looking to go through centralised distribution? Why on each?

• Commercials – product cost, RRP’s, promotional plans, any other activities to support the product

1. Pick the right publication: think about the type of product you make and the type of people you want to buy it, then pitch your story to the type of publication they are likely to read.

2. Know when to call or email: for Sunday papers, Thursday, Friday and Saturday are very busy, so always pitch to us earlier in the week.

3. Don’t try to be wacky: you don’t need a gimmick. You just need a concise pitch with all the relevant information -- a bit about the product, a bit about yourself, the price, and where people can buy it.

4. Don’t promise an exclusive to more than one person: this is the kiss of death for relations with a journalist. If you promise them the story first, then give it to someone

else, you haven’t so much burned that bridge as annihilated it.

5. Don’t be afraid to get in touch via social media: I’ve made some of my best contacts through Twitter (@gnelis), Instgram (@gnelis1) and LinkedIn, so feel free to get in touch via those channels.

6. Don’t reach out to me though - leave that to Americans and the Four Tops!
