Star Wars is a contemporary myth, and its characters are modern icons. The epic duels of Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker, the romance of Princess Leia and Han Solo, the humour of the droid C-3PO, the wisdom of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Master Yoda and the malevolence of the Emperor have all fired our imaginations.

A larger model of the Death Star seen before extensive work to apply surface details.

A monstrous spherical space station capable of destroying worlds was a constant from the earliest versions of the Star Wars script. When the preproduction phase of the first film started, the job of making a prototype model for the battle station was given to illustrator and model artist Colin Cantwell. In the process of making the first model, Cantwell used a plastic sphere which came in two halves, but he

found that the two halves had shrunk and would not join properly in the middle, leaving a gap around

the ‘equator’. Cantwell suggested to George Lucas the idea of turning that central void into a design feature that suggested an entrance into the station. Lucas approved of the idea, and the model was completed with the line around the middle and the parabolic dish housing the laser that would be used to destroy Alderaan.

THRILL OF THE CHASE For closer shots, particularly for the rebel fighters’ dogfight over the battle station, a huge model was built of part of the Death Star’s surface, featuring a trench about 6 metres long – Lucas guessed that it should be about 100 km long in real life. The model, with thousands of

One of the early prototypes by Colin Cantwell of the Death Star showed features such as surface domes that were eventually discarded in the final version.

Concept artist Ralph McQuarrie had a huge input in the creation of George Lucas’ Star Wars universe and his influence on the first trilogy of films is rightly celebrated. Lucas asked McQuarrie to provide artwork showing characters and scenarios based on the draft script, and these illustrations were used to show 20th Century Fox the kind of movie that Lucas and his team had in mind. McQuarrie not

only drew concepts for Darth Vader (he was the first to suggest that he could wear some kind of breathing apparatus), Chewbacca and the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO (the latter clearly inspired by the robot Maria from Metropolis), but he also illustrated some of the most iconic scenes of the saga, such as the famous journey of the two droids across the desert of Tatooine, the canteen at Mos Eisley and of course the Death Star. McQuarrie would also work as a concept designer in the two sequels of the first trilogy, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. He also worked on other films including Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

BEHIND THE CAMERAS

The helmet and mask were the two most

recognizable elements of Vader’s armour.

The helmet, made of an alloy of plasteel,

durasteel and obsidian, protected him

from attack, while the mask, with a skull-

like appearance that inspired terror in his

enemies, was filled with electronic circuits

that formed a cybernetic link with the rest of

his body. At the front of the mask there were

sensors that emulated the senses, such

as sight and hearing, that had been

permanently damaged. A collar piece on

Vader’s neck served as the link between the

mask and the rest of the armour, and had

several interfaces and conduits, including

those which were used by Vader to take

nutrition.

Vader was so terribly injured in his duel with

Obi-Wan Kenobi that he was on the brink

of death. The only way for Darth Sidious to

keep his apprentice alive was to place him in

an armoured suit that would function as a life

support system. This cybernetic armour used

the most advanced technology combined

with the ancient secret sciences of the Sith.

A breastplate made of a durasteel was

connected to a body mesh, with reinforced

gloves and combat boots also made of

durasteel. An imposing black cloak reached

down to the floor. On the breastplate were

the controls that allowed Vader to regulate

his weakened system, with special attention

to breathing, because of the damage to his

lungs. The life-support system enabled

Vader to exist in almost any conditions,

including the vacuum of space.
