Happy Valley Racecourse Date: 1844
December
Dear Government
I, John Macathen a British military officer of the army
propose to build a beautiful racecourse for racing and
training with horses. It is a spectacular round of 1400
meters long. It will be a round of grass with seats for
people to watch. It will be located on a marshland which
is ideal for horse riding in the center of the city in Hong
Kong, because people can get there easy and there isenough space.
Why do we think a racecourse will be interesting:Britain
owns Hong Kong since 1842. In Britain horse racing is
very popular. As there are living lots of Britishin Hong
Kong it is important to provide horse racing facilities.
Because the people relax and enjoy this in their free
time.
For who will the racing be interesting:The racecourse
will be built for the naval and military officers, the rich,
the famous people and businessmen, but as time will
pass, we expect that ordinary Hong Kong citizens willwatch this spectacular as well.

Here is further information about the
racecourse such as the size, time we expect
to build it, etc
Size:
The whole round of the racecourse will be
1400 meters long not counting the seats next
to it.
Expected time to build:Me and the other dozens of military officers
will start building in 1845 and by the end of
February 1846 it will be finished, so it will
take approximately one year.
Things to build the racecourse:It will not be complicated, we need wood for
the sides and grass for the ground, also we
have to put some extra sand on the ground
so it will be less humid; for the spectators we
will construct marshed stands.

where / location
We think the best place will be, just behind the
coastal line of Causeway Bay, as this land is
wet and therefore very good for horse races.
Also the ground is not constructed yet, it is only
in use by farmers. So it will be good for Hong
Kong to have the racecourse here as we get
lost of the diseases Malaria here, we will call it
Happy Valley
Unfortunately we are aware of some problems
that will need to be solved. Here are our
problems and our concerns for the racecourse.
Firstly we will have to find a place for the
farmers to move to. Secondly one of myconcerns is that we will have to drain the
terrain although by this we can get lost of the
disease malaria.

We are suitable for this job because in thepast we have been highly traind in developing
and building camps, tanks, etc. This is not only
me but all theother dozens of military officers. We are also suitable for this job because we
have benn building different things and people
say we are quick workers and we are highly
trained.
Finally when we have built this hugeracecourse we will be happy to pronounce that
all the money of the bets and all of that will go
to your government and we will also give
money to charity which we are proud of.My
opinion of the racecourse when it is finished is
hopefully that it is superb and
glorious.I think that this racecourse will befamous for a long amount of time in the
future. I and the other military officers hope to
be able to build this racecourse, and iuf we get
the chance i would be proud to get a part in
this.
