To whom will you sell: Retail sales are people oriented and require intense long days in spring & fall. Wholesale maybe more logical for beginners. Most popular and popular is combination Article in the Roanoke Times, April 99 Mitchell’s Greenhouses & Nursery, 11 greenhouses, 7 open-air nurseries on 4 acres of their 90-acre farm. 65% Mitchell’s business is retail, remaining wholesale. Offers service - deliver in less than 24 hours. Ed Mitchell says, “It’s quality, service and price, in that order. All the customers and plants are my bosses. I answer to them.” To determine which crops market potential? Visit florists, garden centers both in your area and neighboring states. Retail operation should be located on a well-traveled road, near highways or within 20 minutes of consumers Retail operation: 2 factors: your interest & zoning restrictions. Mail-order is fine, but it requires more money up front for state-wide or national advertising & catalog.

Can’t compete on price with the big chains so maintaining quality is crucial. Higher-quality plants and professional customer service. Climate makes a difference! Climate is the average pattern of

temperature, humidity, wind, and precipitation (cloud cover) of an area over time

Climate affects: Heating/cooling costs Greenhouse structural strength (cost)

Lighting costs • Amount of sun received is important (esp. winter)

Climate is affected by: Latitude

The farther from equator, the more the day length is affected by seasons

Altitude Higher altitudes = greater light

On the equator the days are about equal length all year long. Longer days generally mean more hours for the plant to grow. The top of the mountain has higher light intensity than the bottom. Does this mean you should move up the mountain? No but it does mean that you need to be aware what the conditions are where you are growing. Cloud cover particularly in winter can be a problem. If you have lots of cloud cover, you may be more concerned about light penetration into the greenhouse or using artifical lights or growin low light crops. If you are in a low light area it may be more critical to build a greenhouse with good light penetration. Perhaps glass or a Quonset. Snow load may be important for some styles of greenhouse

For a 10,000 sq ft greenhouse if 60% of the floor is covered with benches and there are 6” pots on the bench and each pot is watered with 6 oz of water you will need about 280 gallons of water for each irrigation and could irrigate 1-3 times per day. Could need a maximum of 840 gallons in a day. Then you still need water for cooling. Quality--If have a shallow well it is possible to get contaminants in the well. If herbicides from the field got in you could get some strange looking growth on your seedlings. Triazine herbicides. The plants in the greenhouse need water all winter. Where will the excess water from the greenhouse go? Is there good enough drainage under the greenhouse for the water to drain?

• Must accept lower winter light transmission to avoid “shadow pockets” • N-S ridge and gutter shadows “move” but E-W shadows do not

Consider all factors – wind or snow may modify your orientation • Strong winds can cause structural damage and increase heating costs • Wind is also a factor in where and how much snow accumulates around your
