Preschool
For the past month the morning preschoolers have been learning about
dental health, nutrition and staying healthy. They really enjoyed feeding Mr.
Big Mouth his healthy food. We are also introducing more rhyming, working
on identifying numbers 1-5, patterns and letters of the alphabet. The after-
noon class continues learning their ABC's. We have been working on many
emerging reading activities such as using a Level A book and the teacher
reads while the students follow along with their craft sticks and then we
discuss the common words. We have also had fun in our science groups
learning about wind, air and rainbows. The class is graphing how many lion/
lamb days we have in the month of March.
Dear Parents,
April showers bring May flowers! Let’s hope we have finally seen the last of the cold and snow. It is hard to believe that it is April already.
I hope all the families enjoyed the Dr. Seuss Family Literacy Night. A big thank you to Mr. & Mrs. Delaney and the community support to
make this tremendous event a success. I hope each family had an opportunity to read the Dr. Seuss book your child brought home from
this event.
I am very proud of the wonderful work of the students in all academic areas during this year. It is very exciting to see
the reading and math progress during the last few months. I would like to thank all the families for the support to en-
courage each child to make academic success. At Crestwood Primary we have implemented the new common core
standards in both math and reading which include very rigorous academic standards for all students.
Our parent information night for children entering kindergarten in the fall will be on Thursday, April 11th at 6:00 p.m. in
our cafeteria. The evening will begin with a presentation from our kindergarten teachers, as well as the school nurse.
The PTO will again invite parents to join and participate in our school community. If you know of any parent with a kin-
dergartener please encourage them to pick up a registration packet in the school office or go to the district website at
www.crestwoodschools.org.
Please join us on Friday, April 26th for the annual Earth Day celebration. This after school event has many great activi-
ties for families. Please look for further information coming home about this event.
Thank you for your continued support of Crestwood Primary School. Please feel free to contact me at 330-357-8202 or at btriv-
[email protected] if you should have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Beth Trivelli Beth Trivelli
Kindergarten
Kindergarten students are busy working in Guided Reading groups. In these groups
they are working on books on their instructional level. The end of the year goal for
Kindergarten is for each child to be on a Level D. Students are working daily at Work
Stations that are made to practice letters, words, sounds and writing. In Social Stud-
ies they are learning about needs and wants and also goods and services. The Math
Topic this month is learning about tens and ones. They are also writing to 30 and
counting to 100 .
First Grade
The first graders have been busy preparing for their Spring Program on March 19th. In Social
Studies, every first grader has been learning about maps, cardinal directions and map skills.
Students created a “Flat Stanley” based on the book “Flat Stanley” by Jeff Brown. After teachers
read the story, students mailed their Flat Stanley to various parts of the country and are anx-
iously awaiting the return from friends and family members to learn more about our states. In
math, students have been working hard on adding and subtracting with tens and ones. The
topic of re-grouping in math has been added this year to the curriculum because of common
core and students are doing a great job learning this math concept. All of first grade will be busy
learning about recycling and how to take care of our earth with the upcoming Earth Day Celebra-
tion we have every year.

Second Grade
All second grade students have just completed two weeks of the Iowa and Cog AT tests. Second graders took inspiration
from Dr. Seuss’s birthday and our school wide Dr. Seuss Literacy night. Using stories from the master of rhyme and silli-
ness, they practiced and reinforced their weekly targeted reading
skills. Students compared and contrasted the characters in the
Cat and the Hat by filing in a Venn diagram and then writing a 5
sentence paragraph using the data. Students used the shared
reading story Horton Hatches an Egg as inspiration to practice
their fictional writing skills. The website switcheroozoo.com al-
lowed their mixed up hatchings and stories to come to life! Dr.
Seuss’s inspiration did not stop with reading and writing. In math,
students used the shared reading story The 500 Hats of Bartholo-
mew Cubbins to practice concepts of place value of 100’s, 10’s
and 1’s. Using hat manipulatives, the students recreated parts of
the story to add and subtract numbers to 500 with and without
regrouping.
