Without the unificaon of businesses, the area may plummet into ‘what’s in it for me’ approach to business growth and governance. It falls on the shoulders of our business community to address educaon, transportaon, jobs, the environment, housing, social challenges such as homelessness, underemployment, drug abuse and rehabilitaon. The Chamber can be the unifying force to promote, iniate, facilitate, educate, and act on these challenges. It is bringing together private investment commied to the ‘we’ and not just the ‘I’. Can the chamber be everything to everyone? No. However, it can be the leader bringing everyone together to focus and address our challenges. The Chamber needs to be in the front of the parade leading this region forward with new ideas and new responses to old quesons. It needs to build on our heritage but ulize fresh approaches. To be in the parade of progress, you may think you are the leader, but if no one is following, - who are you leading? Change does not happen overnight and will involve more than one person. It will take a community – the business community – to stretch its reach, spread its influence, and energize the populace. The TVRC may be and should be the group to do just this. BUSINESS AGENDAa membership publication of the Top of Virginia Regional Chamber

It is with a heavy heart I write my last column for the Top of Virginia Regional C h a m b e r ’ s newsletter. As many may know, I will be leaving the TVRC at the end of July. It seems like yesterday I arrived back in Winchester.

A lot has occurred since then. Your Chamber is strong and moving forward with expansion of our Lead Share Groups – a reflection of the value your chamber provides. Our Young Professionals program has reorganized with strong leadership and a plan for the next 6 months. The focus on professional development, community service and social networking has struck home in meeting the needs of our future business leaders. Valley Business Women has proven successful with outstanding speakers and strong attendance. Our major programs are growing in meeting the expectations and needs of our community and members. The Greater Good Awards continues to be a hallmark event for the community recognizing the “good” for our community. Our Golf Tournament was larger this year than in years past. The public policy program has grown stronger and has kept Winchester, Frederick and Clarke counties as an important part of discussions in Richmond as evidenced by the Governor and his cabinet spending time in our community to listen to our concerns. We have strengthened the financial position of the chamber and it is heading in the right direction. We have added some new faces to the chamber to assist in the growth and continue the progress forward. As I leave the chamber, I want to share my thoughts. The Chamber can be the unifying force to promote, initiate, facilitate, educate, and act on these challenges. It is bringing together private investment committed to the ‘we’ and not just the ‘I’. The New Educators Breakfast has long been an annual tradition for the Chamber and is eagerly anticipated by our local schools. The Top of Virginia Regional Chamber will host the event on Friday, August 7 at the Best Western Lee-Jackson Hotel and Conference Center. Educators who are joining the staffs of local public and private schools will be in attendance. Please join us for a delicious breakfast, an inspirational message from a guest speaker, networking with business sponsors and school administrators, and gifts and prizes for the new school personnel. The door prize drawings are always eagerly antici-pated by the new teachers in attendance.

Your support of the event will pay for break-fast for a new educator or school adminis-trator as well as a representative from your company. You can personally thank educa-tors for the job that they do and gain some exposure for your business at the same time. Be on the look out for additional information and a sponsorship form in the near future. For more information, contact Jody Wall at (540) 662-4118 ext. 16 or [email protected].

a bright future. A longtime friend sent me a brief story on the basics of life. Once, all the vil-lagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of the prayer all the people gathered but only one boy came with an umbrella. That’s FAITH. When you throw a baby in the air, she laughs because she knows you will catch her, That’s TRUST. Every night we go to bed without any assurance of being alive the next morning but still we set the alarms to wake up. That’s HOPE. We plan big things for tomorrow in spite of zero knowledge of the future. That’s CONFIDENCE. We see the world suffering but still we get married.

That’s LOVE. On an Old Man’s shirt was written a sentence: “I am not 60 years old..I am sweet 16 with 44 years’ experi-ence.” That’s ATTITUDE.

Remember the basics. My best to all in the years ahead. This is Michael Malone closing out.
