We’d worked so hard to get to that, so we worked harder and got the results,” he said. The 16-point deficit against Stevens was a wakeup call, according to Hejna. “We definitely came out flat, more than anything. When you look around the huddle we usually have that vibe, and it wasn’t there,” he said. “Then we came out like an entirely different team. One good play led to the next, and we continued to get things done throughout the game.” Of the 474 yards passing Strahl has on the season, 250 of it are to Hejna. But the jun- ior quarterback has also hit six other receivers, including 6-7 Evan Greeneway and 6-4 Matt Fitzgerald. “I have three big guys that can go up and get it, speed guys that can stretch a de- fense and Jordan (Lightner) and Levi (Davis) out of the backfield,” Strahl said. “That’s huge for me. It makes my life easier.” Strahl also credits the in- dividual whose record he broke, Michael Rucker, who had started the previous 2 1/2 seasons. “I don’t know if I’d have gotten it without him,” Strahl said of Rucker, who set the previous mark of 315 yards in a game in 2011. “The little things he showed me helped me get that record.” Hejna broke one of the oldest records in the Yankton football books, set by YHS Hall of Famer Dave Bitterman in 1976. Bitterman held the single-game mark of 187 yards, and still holds marks for receptions in a season (40), receiving yards in a sea- son (687) and career recep- tions (52) and receiving yards (1,076). “It surprised me a lot. There are not a lot of old records like that left,” Hejna said. “To have a record that old broken is definitely a privilege.” While Hejna enters Fri- day’s game with Brandon Val- ley just 11 catches and 357 yards from those career marks, neither Strahl nor Hejna are concerned about records ... unless you’re talk- ing win-loss records. “Records are great,” Hejna said. “But they won’t do me any good if we’re not winning ball games.” You can follow James D. But by then he already had made two visits to Nebraska and he and his parents felt Lincoln was the right place for him. “I had a good relationship with the coaching staff, I felt they brought the right guys in and I felt it was a great at- mosphere here,” Newby said. “I love it. I really fell in love with the guys here and the coaching staff.” Newby and Brown con- nected quickly. Newby’s dad, Terrell Newby Sr., grew up in Chicago and is a lifelong Bears fan. He passed on to his son stories about the ex- ploits of Payton. Brown was a defensive back at Brown Uni- versity in the 1970s and got to know Payton when he was in training camp with the Bears. Brown and Newby dis- cussed Payton’s inspirational work habits and attitude. Brown also sold Newby on the long tradition of running backs at Nebraska and the program’s continuing com- mitment to the running game. “When I come in I’ll be part of a legacy,” Newby said, remembering what Brown told him. “It’s cool to be part of that now. Ahman Green. Johnny Rodgers. There’s a list of guys. Just to even be part of that, to be mentioned with them, is an honor.” Brown said he knew Newby would have to con- tribute right away because Rex Burkhead graduated and two other running backs had transferred from Nebraska the past two years. “When we saw him in camp that first scrimmage against our varsity defense, he lit it up pretty good,” Brown said. “You knew there was something special there.” In the opener against Wyoming, Newby ran nine times for 47 yards during a 13-play scoring drive that gave Nebraska a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter. He fin- ished with 76 yards on 15 car- ries in the 37-34 win. Last week he bounced back from a fumble to break a 20-yard run at the start of the Huskers’ final scoring drive in the 56-13 victory over South- ern Miss. It was on that same drive he drew his penalty for pushing his left hand into Alexander Walters’ facemask as he went out of bounds on a 19-yard run. “No one really said any- thing to me about it on the sideline,” Newby said. “I just stiff-armed him like we stiff- arm the sled every day in practice. I didn’t know it was going to be a personal foul.” Newby said he tried to not think about the game against UCLA until this week, even though friends back home have reminded him about it since he verbally committed to the Huskers in January. UCLA coach Jim Mora said he’s watched film of Newby this season and that nothing he’s done has surprised him. “He’s a very good player and he’s going to be a great player, and we really liked him,” Mora said. “He’s a local kid, and we were disap- pointed to lose him to Ne- braska, obviously. Hope he’s happy there and has a lot of success — just very limited success this weekend.” 716 Pine • 605.661.0987 NOW NOW N OW FORT KNOX OPEN OPEN OPEN Climate Control Self Storage APPLIANCE 920 Broadway, Yankton 665-9461 CLEANING FloorTec Professional Cleaning & Restoration 605-665-4839 665-5700 1-800-529-2450 •Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning •Duct Cleaning •Fire/Smoke •Water Restoration •Mold Testing & Remediation HEATING & COOLING 920 Broadway, Yankton 665-9461 Justras Body Shop 2806 Fox Run Parkway Yankton, 665-3929 Riverside Auto Body www.riversideautobody-gonegreen.com 402-667-3285 AUTO BODY First Dakota National Bank 225 Cedar St., 665-7432 2105 Broadway, 665-4999 Services Center Federal Credit Union 609 W. 21st, Yankton, SD BANKING Boston Shoes To Boots 312 West 3rd, Yankton, SD 605-665-9092 ARCH SUPPORT Yankton Paint & Decorating 406 Broadway • 665-5032 “Since 1964” •Carpet • Vinyl • Wood • Ceramic & Laminate Flooring •Window & Wall Treatments Benjamin Moore and Pratt & Lambert Paint DECORATING Advertise Here! Strahl said that the open-ing loss was tough, but that itpushed him to keep gettingbetter.

“We didn’t give up. We’dworked so hard to get to that,so we worked harder and gotthe results,” he said.

The 16-point deficitagainst Stevens was awakeup call, according toHejna.

“We definitely came outflat, more than anything. When you look around thehuddle we usually have thatvibe, and it wasn’t there,” hesaid. “Then we came out likean entirely different team. One good play led to thenext, and we continued to getthings done throughout thegame.”

Of the 474 yards passingStrahl has on the season, 250of it are to Hejna. But the jun-ior quarterback has also hitsix other receivers, including6-7 Evan Greeneway and 6-4Matt Fitzgerald.

“I have three big guys thatcan go up and get it, speedguys that can stretch a de-fense and Jordan (Lightner)and Levi (Davis) out of thebackfield,” Strahl said.“That’s huge for me. It makesmy life easier.”

Strahl also credits the in-dividual whose record hebroke, Michael Rucker, whohad started the previous 21/2 seasons.

“I don’t know if I’d havegotten it without him,” Strahlsaid of Rucker, who set theprevious mark of 315 yards in

a game in 2011. “The littlethings he showed me helpedme get that record.”

Hejna broke one of theoldest records in the Yanktonfootball books, set by YHSHall of Famer Dave Bittermanin 1976. Bitterman held thesingle-game mark of 187yards, and still holds marksfor receptions in a season(40), receiving yards in a sea-son (687) and career recep-tions (52) and receiving yards(1,076).

“It surprised me a lot. There are not a lot of oldrecords like that left,” Hejnasaid. “To have a record thatold broken is definitely aprivilege.”

While Hejna enters Fri-day’s game with Brandon Val-

ley just 11 catches and 357yards from those careermarks, neither Strahl norHejna are concerned aboutrecords ... unless you’re talk-ing win-loss records.

“Records are great,” Hejnasaid. “But they won’t do meany good if we’re not winningball games.”

Newby grew up 15 min-utes from the UCLA campusand was delighted the Bruinswanted him. But by then healready had made two visitsto Nebraska and he and hisparents felt Lincoln was theright place for him.

“I had a good relationshipwith the coaching staff, I feltthey brought the right guysin and I felt it was a great at-mosphere here,” Newby said.“I love it. I really fell in lovewith the guys here and thecoaching staff.”

Newby and Brown con-nected quickly. Newby’s dad,Terrell Newby Sr., grew up inChicago and is a lifelongBears fan. He passed on tohis son stories about the ex-ploits of Payton. Brown was adefensive back at Brown Uni-versity in the 1970s and gotto know Payton when he wasin training camp with theBears. Brown and Newby dis-cussed Payton’s inspirationalwork habits and attitude.

Brown also sold Newby onthe long tradition of runningbacks at Nebraska and theprogram’s continuing com-mitment to the running game.

“When I come in I’ll be

part of a legacy,” Newby said, remembering what Browntold him. “It’s cool to be partof that now. Ahman Green.Johnny Rodgers. There’s alist of guys. Just to even bepart of that, to be mentionedwith them, is an honor.”

Brown said he knewNewby would have to con-tribute right away becauseRex Burkhead graduated andtwo other running backs hadtransferred from Nebraskathe past two years.

“When we saw him incamp that first scrimmageagainst our varsity defense,he lit it up pretty good,”Brown said. “You knew therewas something specialthere.”

In the opener againstWyoming, Newby ran ninetimes for 47 yards during a13-play scoring drive thatgave Nebraska a 16-point leadin the fourth quarter. He fin-ished with 76 yards on 15 car-ries in the 37-34 win.

Last week he bouncedback from a fumble to break a20-yard run at the start of theHuskers’ final scoring drive inthe 56-13 victory over South-ern Miss. It was on that samedrive he drew his penalty forpushing his left hand intoAlexander Walters’ facemaskas he went out of bounds ona 19-yard run.

“No one really said any-thing to me about it on the

sideline,” Newby said. “I juststiff-armed him like we stiff-arm the sled every day inpractice. I didn’t know it wasgoing to be a personal foul.”

Newby said he tried to notthink about the game againstUCLA until this week, eventhough friends back homehave reminded him about itsince he verbally committedto the Huskers in January.

UCLA coach Jim Mora saidhe’s watched film of Newbythis season and that nothinghe’s done has surprised him.

“He’s a very good playerand he’s going to be a greatplayer, and we really likedhim,” Mora said. “He’s a localkid, and we were disap-pointed to lose him to Ne-braska, obviously. Hope he’shappy there and has a lot ofsuccess — just very limitedsuccess this weekend.”
