Coming to a new country – with a new language,

culture and social expecta-tions – can be confusing and overwhelming for any-one at any age. But for a senior, who has already lived most of their lives somewhere else, it’s a uniquely challenging event. For some newcomers, there’s also the additional challenges of having spent time as a refugee or in a war-torn country. And in a city like Burnaby, where there are thousands of residents, dozens of cul-tures and languages and a multitude of communities, it can be hard to know where to start. The Burnaby Multicultural Society provides a variety of programs and resources for newcomers of all ages, but some that are specifi cally intended for seniors. The society’s goal is to help integrate new Canadians

as fully functional and val-ued citizens. Their mission statement reads, in part: “The BMS pro-motes the development of an integrated, multicultural society that both shares and celebrates the contri-butions of the peoples of all ethnic and cultural origins.” Specifi cally, the organiza-tion helps newcomers to settle successfully, to cel-ebrate their heritage and works to advocate for pub-lic policy to ensure equity and access for all.For seniors they offer an outreach program and an elder abuse program, along with a variety of other resources for individuals of all ages. For example, two ongoing sessions include English con-versation classes for seniors and a workshop for seniors to help learn about using smartphones. Their elder abuse workshops

focus on the issue of seniors who may be abused by family members, caregivers and others – in the form of physical, sexual, fi nancial or emotional abuse. It’s estimated that about eight per cent of older adults in B.C. are likely to experi-ence abuse but it’s likely the overall number is higher due to the likelihood of low reporting. Shame or guilt may stop the person from reporting the problem; on the other hand, the perpetrator may be a loved family member that they may feel com-pelled to protect. The society runs a variety of workshops and offers re-sources to help seniors learn about and deal with elder abuse. The Burnaby Multicultural Society is online at www.thebms.ca, or at 6255 Nel-son Ave. Call 604-431-4131 for more information.

There’s no place like home.

It was true for Dorothy, and it’s true for many seniors as well. Though individual needs – be it medical, physical or simply social – can lead some seniors to prefer the benefi ts of group or sup-ported living situations in retirement communities or assisted living centres, many seniors prefer to stay in their own homes as long as they can. But with many living on their own in “empty nests” – usually without children and often without a partner – there can be a variety of challenges to ensure safety and, equally importantly, happiness. Programs like Better at

Home, a United Way-man-aged program funded by the provincial government, are going a long way to help make that happen. Better at Home works to support seniors in their own communities by providing simple services delivered by local non-profi t agencies. Services can include social visits, yard work, simple home repair, transporta-tion to appointments, help with grocery shopping and housekeeping. The services are all non-medical and are considered supplemental to home support services pro-vided through local health authorities. Provided by a mix of volunteers and paid staff, the services are paid for with a fee based on the senior’s income.

“We want to help seniors age with dignity and main-tain their quality of life,” said Michael McKnight, presi-dent and CEO of the United Way of the Lower Mainland, in a press release announc-ing the expansion of the program last year. “Better at Home helps seniors stay en-gaged and independent. By providing seniors with the support they need, United Way helps prevent isola-tion, loneliness and related health problems.” To fi nd out more about Bet-ter at Home services, see betterathome.ca or call Burnaby Better at Home at 604-297-4877.Aside from services and supports, there are many ways to make living at home safer and more en-joyable: make connections with neighbours and have their phone numbers on hand in case of emergen-cy; get involved in a local seniors group or commu-nity centre and make new friends in the neighbour-hood; assess your home space to make sure it is “fall friendly” – falls are the one of the leading sources of injury for seniors, so learning more about preventing falls can help keep home a safe place to be. For more information on a variety of topics, and resources for seniors, see www.seniorsbc.ca for the province’s website on healthy aging, medical services, and more.

BURNABY SENIORS’ GUIDE 2014 21

Life always comes full circle. For some families, that can often mean

that the role of care-taking can swap from parent to child as time goes on. That can be challenging for both the par-ent – who is accustomed to being more independent – and for the “child” who, as an adult may also be caring for their own children and balancing a busy working schedule too. The changing roles, demands on time and energy and uncertainty over health condi-tions can easily cause stress and anger. And more and more families are fi nding themselves in this changing dynamic, so much so that there’s even a word for it: the sandwich generation. The middle of the sandwich is the adult child who may be caretaking for not just their parents but even possibly grandpar-ents, as well as their own children at the same time. “Caregivers may be so focused on caring for a loved one that they neglect their own well-being which may affect the quality of

care they provide,” notes the Province of B.C.’s website on the issue of caregiving for family members. But how to ensure your own “well-being” is looked after? The short answer: get a little help. Here in the city, the Burnaby Seniors Out-reach Services Society runs programs and events throughout the year to help sup-port seniors and their family caregivers in a variety of ways. The group offers a self-help support group that meets weekly, education sessions throughout the year with speakers and information, and one-to-one counselling. They also have an extensive guide for re-sources for family caregivers to help navi-gate services, government programs and community initiatives that may help. Each year, the society also runs a family caregivers information and speakers fair with exhibitors, talks, and plenty of helpful resources. The society can be reached at 604-291-2258 or online at www.bsoss.org.
