Treasure means a lot of different things…Treasure special moments with your dad on Father’s Day in Burlington. For some of us, that may just mean a special memory. For others, a chance to head out to your backyard on June 18 so you can grill your dad a special meal on his special day. Or, treat Dad to a day of golf at Hawks View Golf Club.
For a day you won’t ever forget, grab some time together at John’s Main Event, Fred’s, outdoors on the patio at the Waterfront or Lucky Star or another of his fav’s or hit the trivia game night for Father’s Day fun a bit earlier in the week at Charcoal Grill.
Take in a little sunshine at any number of ball diamonds where fathers and sons can play catch on the field or just get there before the game begins.
Eat and drink your way through our vibrant selection of restaurants, cycle along the bike trails, or venture to the lakes and throw in a line!
June offers us an official peek at the summer season so no matter how you choose to spend your time, enjoy it!

With an eye toward improvement and knowledge gained from previous efforts, BikeBurlington is presenting the third annual Pedal, Paddle and Play on June 24, 2017. As in previous years, this activity provides participants the opportunity to ride the Seven Waters Trail between Bur-lington and Waterford and/or paddle the Fox River with music provided along the way. The organizers hope that the earlier date will provide both warm temperatures and higher water levels for paddlers.
BikeBurlington is pleased to announce that Runzheimer International is this year’s sponsor and their generosity makes this event possible. For a mere $10 entry fee, participants will get a great looking t-shirt, the opportunity to select a rout for cycling and/or paddling, snacks and water stops and music at three different points along the way. The organization also is pleased to be working with SherriKayaks of Waterford who will have kayaks to rent at a reduced price so you do not even have to own a kayak to participate! For more information, go to “bikeburlingtonwisconsin.org.”
The planning and implementation of this event has expanded into a partnership with the Village of Waterford who not only has made the park/launch area behind their Village Hall available again this year but also has worked with the Burlington group on route logistics and the connec-tion with SherriKayaks. It is hard not to get excited about neighbors collaborating on a fun event that utilizes and celebrates a common natural resource.
Speaking of Waterford, an invitation was extended to our Chamber by the Burlington Public Works Director to participate in a meeting of the Fox River Water Trail group on April 17th. This group has been working to develop a wa-ter trail along the river similar to what is happening along the Fox River in Illinois and the Rock River in Wisconsin and Illinois. From the discussion that day, it was apparent that there are people with state and national agencies as well from communities along the way who recog-nize the treasure that the Fox River is and its potential for enhancing our quality of life. Locally as well, comments have been made about developing launches and improving the banks of the River in Burlington, so stay tuned.
Again, Pedal, Paddle and Play is on Saturday June 24, 2017 starting at 10:00am from Riverside Park in Burlington or, if you so choose, behind Village Hall in Waterford. Kayak rental is available so all you need to do is pull that bicycle out of the garage (and why haven’t you already?) and come out and have a guaranteed good time. —Tom Lebak

Three Ways to Use Herbs This SummerIt’s time to start clipping fresh herbs from your pots and window boxes. Add a little basil
here and chopped mint there and your summer can be full of flavor. Below are three ways herbs can be a simple part of your summer. On the Grill. What do we love to do this time of year? Relax, entertain, and fire up the grill. Herbs can add extra flavor to your grilled entrees. Use rosemary branches to skewer meat and veggies. Make an herb butter to slather on grilled fish or corn on the cob. Softer herbs like sage, oregano, and mint work well in marinades and foil packets. Infuse delicious flavor into meat by laying woody herbs such as thyme, lemon verbena, and tarragon directly on the grill grate and place the meat on top of them. In your Drinks. Using herbs in drinks is quickly becoming the thing to do. Muddle and infuse in cocktails or add whole to water for refreshing drinks on a hot summer day. Fresh mint leaves and sliced cucumber pair well for flavored water. For a stronger drink, use gin instead. A few more flavorful herb and fruit combos:
strawberry + lemon + thyme cucumber + lemon + mint + rosemarycantaloupe + mintblackberry + lime + mint + cilantro
In Your Salads. Fresh herbs and fresh greens are a perfect match. Herbal vinaigrette is an obvious way to add flavor to salads. Marjoram, thyme, and tarragon are good choices that add flavor. But why not enjoy leaves of fresh herbs as part of your salad? Adding basil, pars-ley, dill and chives can take salad to a whole new level. We all look forward to the yummy combo of tomatoes and basil. And cilantro is a must for zesty salads and pairs well with avocado, black beans and corn.
In addition to their many culinary uses, herbs can be used to repel insects, have healing qualities, and will even help the vegetable garden grow better. With so many herbs to use so many ways, your summer can be full of fun and flavor.

PAGE 10 JUNE 2017 BURLINGTON... DISCOVER THE TREASURES
W hen the Wisconsin Central railroad (now the Canadian National) first came through Burlington in 1886, the tracks going northwest from the downtown area toward the depot crossed over the mill race that powered the flouring mill and over an expanse of water on the south portion of the mill pond created by the mill dam. Bridges had to be built across these water areas to enable the railroad to serve its purpose.
The mill dam and mill race, and the location of the railroad tracks and bridges, are depicted in a cut (below left) from an 1896 bird’s-eye drawing of Burlington by C. J. Pauli. The photo below at the right, taken by Howard Wood about 1910, shows the railroad tracks on the long bridge crossing over the south end of the mill pond.
In 1919 the Wisconsin Central’s successor ‒ the Soo Line railroad ‒ and The Milwaukee Electric Rail and Light Co. (TMERL), which had purchased the old flouring mill and the water rights, agreed to shut off the mill race. The Standard Democrat of October 17, 1919, reported the result of the agreement in the following article entitled “Bridges Are Replaced by Gravel.”
A walk along the Soo Line, adjoining the mill dam, shows work has been started that will completely change the landscape in that vicinity and while there is no doubt as to the benefit of the change, it removes scenes dear to the heart of most Burlington men and young men.
For what Burlington boy during the past two generations hasn’t played around the two Soo Line bridges? What boy didn’t fish below the old mill, or catch crabs among the rocks below the dam? We did, and we always had plenty of company. But those days have passed. Since the closing of the mill, time has caused a change and what was formerly a place of beauty has become an eyesore.
T.M.E.R.&L. Co., which purchased the Ayers mill and water power rights in this city, and the Soo Line have evidently reached some agreement whereby the electric company gives the Soo Line the right to shut off the water power from the old mill. This will eliminate two long bridges and give the Soo Line the opportunity to build a long sidetrack from the depot, connecting with the one at the Wilbur Lumber Co. coal elevator in the rear of the Hotel Burlington.
Work of making the change was started during the summer when the Soo Line tore down the overhead iron work of the bridge just north of the electric line crossing. During the past two weeks forces of men have been moving the cross beams on that bridge and the one in the rear of the city water works pumping station so gravel dumped from cars will fall through. On Wednesday work was started hauling gravel and will be continued until both holes are filled up and the track runs on solid roadbed. An immense amount of filler will be needed. When the right-of-way is filled up to abutting property, most of which is already filled, there will be a noticeable improvement.
The area along the Echo Lake shoreline where the railroad has run since the bridges were removed and the roadbed was filled in is shown in the following aerial photo taken by Dennis Tully in July 2015.Help us preserve our history. The Burlington Area Garden Club Announces July 9 Garden WalkGarden enthusiasts are invited to view five stunning gardens and two commu-
nity gardens during the Garden Club’s 2017 Walk and Raffle. On Sunday, July 9, the Walk will be held from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This fun event will give the public an opportunity to visit unique gardens in the Burlington and surrounding areas. Take a country drive to discover a uniquely eclectic garden with annuals and perennials intermingled with rustic buildings and rusty objects. Explore the high path or the low path of lush plantings surrounding a picturesque lake home. Stroll down a city street to view three properties with gardens of multi-colored blooms, distinctly beautiful landscaping, and a hidden infinity waterfall. Hardscape of boulders, stone benches and raked sand accent a tranquil courtyard. For inspira-tion and reflection, visit this secret gem of a garden consisting of statues, birdbath, and bubbling water feature. Interacting within our gardens, will be talented artists from The Gathering displaying their works.
Advance tickets will be $8 and $10 the day of the Walk. Tickets can be pur-chased at Burlington Garden Center, Richter’s Marketplace, Breezy Hill Nursery, Gooseberries Fresh Food Market, or Milaeger’s in Sturtevant. The day of the Walk tickets will be sold for $10 at the gazebo at Wehmhoff Square located on the cor-ner of Pine and Washington Streets near the Burlington Public Library. Event will be held rain or shine.
The raffle this year will include great items such as $500 of gift cards in $50 increments, garden gift baskets, and many more interesting and unique prizes. The drawing will be held at 3:30 PM on July 9 at the Wehmhoff Square gazebo and winner need not be present to win.
Proceeds from the Walk will allow the Garden Club to present grants to local service organizations and scholarships to students studying in horticulture related fields at either the technical college or university level.
