The preacher made it more appealing when he said: “for everything under the earth there is a season” (Ecclesiastes. 3:1). The fact of a beginning runs through the old and new testaments (Gen.1:1; John 1:1); there is also an opening to the end of the world as testified by Daniel in the Old Testament (Daniel 12:1-13) and our Lord Jesus Christ and St. Paul in the New Testament (Matt.24:15-29; 1Thess.5:1-11). From the time our Lord Jesus Christ gave a hint about the end of the world through the teachings of St. Paul about the second coming of Jesus Christ like a “thief”, the known world has been living in unsettling expectation to the extent that we have more than 200 recorded predictions about the end of the world; but the end is yet to come! These are some of the prominent predictions: 1. Montanus’ prediction: Montanus was an early heretic who emerged about the 2 nd half of the 2 nd century in Phrygia Asia Minor with the idea that he received a special revelation from the Holy Spirit announcing the imminent end of the world. People were asked to forfeit their material belongings and wait for the New Jerusalem coming to what is now known as Turkey. This did not happen. 2. Jehovah’s Witness Religion. The founder of the sect Charles Taze Russell reckoning with the prophecy of Daniel maintained that the world would end by 1914. When it did not come to pass the sect chose successive dates like 1915, 1918, 1920, 1925, 1941, 1975, and 1994. 3. The Millerites’ Prediction: The founder of the movement, a New England farmer William Miller, claimed that he received a message that the world would end on April 23, 1843. That date passed smoothly and peacefully. 4. The Mormon’s Prediction: The founder of the Church of Latter- Day Saint (Mormons) Joseph Smith claimed that God told him that the world would end in 1891. But the world did not end 5. December 21, 2012: The latest prediction puts the rapture and end of the world on the 21 st of December 2012. But here we are! Dear Brothers and sisters, we could spend the entire space recounting prophecies of the end of the world, their proponents and the accompanying failures; the list is long. In any case all the predictions overlooked the statement of our Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew (24:36): “No one knows, however, when that day and hour will come- neither the angels in heaven nor the Son, the Father alone knows”. (See also Mk.13:32). As the liturgical and calendar year draws to an end we are reminded that we are in this world for a while! There is an end in view. Actually when anyone of us dies his or her time comes to an end. Evidently none of us has the gift to live forever. In any case we should be more concerned about eternity than the fear of the end of the world which is sure to come but at a divinely appointed time not by human predictions. The question that could be more productive is: “How ready am I - if the Lord should come today will I be saved?” More so we are called upon to announce the end of sin and disobedience than the end of the world. Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

15 November, 2015

Year B: Dan 12:1-3; Heb 10:11-14,18; Mk 13:24-32

The Annual Appeal for the works of the Society in our Parish is upon us. The collection for our annual financial

appeal will be taken up next weekend. Envelopes are available today and will also be available next week.

Credit Card facilities are available on the envelopes. In addition, you can make a credit card donation directly to

the Society website (http://www.vinnies.org.au/donate) – if you do, we just ask that you select “Queensland” and

write “Burleigh Heads” in the comments box.

Specifically again this year, our appeal includes a call for manpower. The Conference at St Benedict’s

Mudgeeraba unfortunately has gone into recess resulting in a corresponding increase in the workload for the

Infant Saviour Conference. The members of our two active Conferences need your help. Remember the call of

Pope Francis for all of us to get out of our comfort zones and serve the poor and the weakest. Our request to

you is for some of your time to do as our Pope requests. The insert in today’s Bulletin gives you some ideas for

the way you might help. We are grateful to all those wonderful parishioners who already volunteer their time

regularly to assist in the Conference works.

Just some of YOUR time would be appreciated. You may contact any member of our Conferences either

personally or through the Parish Office. The Infant Saviour Conference meets for one hour each second

Monday evening at the Church meeting room, and the Special Works Conference meets weekly at Ozanam Villa.

The Society has remained active this past year throughout the wider Burleigh community, continuing its long

history in the Parish. Home visits remain the major work of the Infant Saviour Conference. Residents at

Ozanam Villa continue to receive regular visits by its Special Works Conference.

And the other significant work is provision of the Migrant Advisory Service which continues its activities in

Burleigh, Southport, Woodridge and Spring Hill in Brisbane.

In terms of pure numbers, the activities have included:

900 home visits to 1,050 adults and 950 children;

$75,000 in expenditure for assistance;

assistance to 186 beds at Ozanam Villa;

150 people assisted with visa issues;

60 hampers and gift packs to families at Christmas;

180 refugees entertained at the annual Tallebudgera Creek picnic.

The value of direct assistance provided during home visits includes the provision of food (40%) and monetary

assistance for items such as pharmacy prescriptions, rent, fuel, and utility costs for power, communications and

water usage (60%).

We are grateful to Marymount campuses for their annual contributions of food, health packs and Christmas

gifts. The dollar value of assistance above does not include the cost of clothing supplied free of charge from

the shops at Palm Beach and Burleigh Waters, nor the cost of furniture items supplied from the Society depot at

Arundel to 70 families during the year, nor does it include the value of the 100 baskets of food and of over 100

health packs collected from Marymount, nor does it include the value of gifts left at the Christmas gifting trees..

The annual collection will be taken up next week. Contributions of your time will be gratefully received at ANY

time soon.

We thank you sincerely for your generosity in the past and again seek your prayerful and practical support to

enable a hand-up to be offered to those in need.

Parish News and Happenings

MEMORIAL MASS - our Annual Parish Mass to pray for deceased parishioners will be held on next Tuesday evening 17 November at Infant Saviour at 7pm. Light supper to follow. In particular, a special invitation is extended to the families of our more recent deceased to join this time of thanksgiving for the life and influence of their departed loved one. You may wish to bring a flower to place on the cross in remembrance. This Mass is open to the entire Parish and all are welcome.

SUNG EVENING PRAYER IN NOVEMBER - Office of the Dead - Monday evenings, 5.30pm, Infant Saviour Church. It is a call to prayer of psalms, canticle, scripture, sacred silence, Magnificat, intercessions, prayers and blessing. An evening prayer of thanksgiving at the end of the day, offering up to God our day's work.

PARISH VISION STATEMENT - Copies still available at doors of the church and feedback welcome. Please return by next week.

COMING SOON! "Beloved", a daily prayer resource for use during Advent. Beautifully prepared and a great way to pray a way through Advent. (Only $3 a copy).

CARE & CONCERN - Final meeting for year - 27 December, 9am. "Christmas theme".

SOCIAL JUSTICE GROUP - Thank you to all who attended the film "Beatriz's War" last month and who have supported the BH-Ossu Project this year. Over $5,000 was raised in tickets and donations, to assist with the cost of sending a container to Ossu in East Timor and for the purchase of reconditioned computers for the schools. The container, packed with donated school desks, musical instruments, stationery, computers and sports equipment will leave Brisbane for Dili on 7 December. To date, Burleigh Heads Parish has raised AUD $29,729 towards the rebuilding cost of St Teresinha's Junior High School. We need to continue our parish commitment to meet the $30,000 US target, as our contribution to Marist Solidarity Partners. With an extra effort over Christmas, we are sure that we can fulfil our commitment. The $2,000 shortfall is due to the devaluation of the Australian dollar against the US currency, which is used in East Timor. As a Christmas gift, you could suggest a donation card for the BH-Ossu Project, which are at the back of all the churches. Anyone wishing to view the film Beatriz's War can borrow the DVD, for a donation to St Teresinha's. Contact Sue or Bren 5522 4880. The last meeting of the Social Justice Group for this year is on Tuesday 8 December at 7pm at Infant Saviour meeting room. [email protected] or [email protected]

Liturgical Music for Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

INTRODUCTORY RITES: Gathering: Gather Your People Gather your people, O Lord. Gather your people, O Lord. One bread, one body, one spirit of love, gather your people, O Lord. Draw us forth to the table of life: brothers and sisters, each of us called to walk in your light. No more harm on the mountain of God: swords into plowshares. Free us, O Lord, from hardness of heart. © 1991, Bob Hurd, OCP Publications

LITURGY OF THE WORD: Psalm Response: Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST: Acclamation: Save us, Saviour of the world, for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. Communion Processional: Seek Ye First Seek ye first the kingdom of God and God's righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you; Allelu, alleluia. Ask, and it shall be given unto you, seek, and ye shall find, knock, and the door shall be opened unto you; Allelu, alleluia. Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in their midst; and what so-ever ye ask, I will do. Allelu, alleluia. © 1962, Karen Lafferty, Marantha! Music

CONCLUDING RITES Dismissal: Shine, Jesus, Shine Lord, the light of your love is shining, in the midst of the darkness, shining; Jesus, light of the world, shine upon us, set us free by the truth you now bring us. Shine on me, shine on me. Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father's glory; blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire. Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy; send forth your Word, Lord, and let there be light. Lord, I come to your awesome presence, from the shadows into your radiance; by the blood I may enter your brightness, search me, try me, consume all my darkness. Shine on me, shine on me. © 1987, Graham Kendrick, Make Way Music Ltd
