DEFINITIONBurglary is one of the most common crimes!

It is similar to theft or robbery.

Burglary in legal terms is defined as the act of breaking in and entering into the dwelling of another person especially at nighttime with the objective of committing a felony*. According to the laws, burglary is seen as a felony. And it also includes other terms like trespassing or entering a building without permission given.

* felony = serious crime

BURGLARY Also, the legal definition of burglary can be different in other

countries. For example in ENGLAND it is the act of theft and it does not say anything about entering a property. However, the rules on burglary can be governed by the local environment and the way the society is built. The legal system in England is much more complicated than, for example, in the USA.

In the United States, if a person has clearly mentioned by putting up a board on their property saying that trespassers will be prosecuted, then it is best not to go even 10 feet close to that property. It may be termed as burglary if you do so - whatever your intention may be.

In general, burglary is a serious crime because it dangers the safety of the residents and also people who live on the

property feel unguarded.

BURGLARY STATISTICS Burglary may include stealing of valuable things or objects and take away

things owned by the owner of the property. It is not necessary that to perform a burglary a person has to use force or violence. Burglary can be committed when a person uses forcible entry, unlawful enter and through threat. So, even when nobody is living on the property, if a person enters, then it is unlawful and is considered as burglary. Burglary can happen several times and not only in homes. For example, in cars parked in a parking lot.

However, no matter what we think of burglary the statistics show a different picture. The statistics of burglary all over the United States have actually increased by a large number. Property crimes in 2013 have increased by 75%, and an estimated 2,154,126 burglary offenses were reported. So, there has been 0.5% increase as compared to 2012.

An overall examination of burglary crimes for the last 5 to 10 years shows a consistent increase in the rate of nearly 1.8%. However, if compared to the previous decade, then there has been an overall DECREASE.
