How to use a Bunsen burner Safely

Main safety Points
• Tie your hair back• Clear your desk area• Don’t put your hand over the Bunsen• Be aware of the three safety flames Safety flame medium flame roaring flame
Before you set up instructions
Make sure your desk area is completely clear of paper, pencils, pens, rulers, etc.
Move Your stool back, put your bag under it and blazer on top.
Tie your hair back. Put an apron on and safety goggles.
Equipment• Bunsen Burner• Heat proof mat• Gauze• Tri-pod • Goggles• Apron• Gas-Tap
Set Up
• Take your equipment from the class cupboard.• Make Sure the gas tap is off.• Put the flame proof mat down to protect the desk.• Plug the Bunsen in the tap and on top of the mat.• Place the gauze on a tri pod and turn on the gas.• When you’re finished turn the gas off.
Lighting
Lighting is fairly easy all you need to do is• Get the teacher to light there’s first.• Take a wooden splint and light it.• Carefully walk to your Bunsen Burner and hold
it over the top with your gas tap gas on.• When lit don’t place your hand over the blue
flame• Continue with the experiment.
Packing away
• After the experiment turn off the gas over all.• Keep your apron on, carefully put your Bunsen
on the side of the classroom. • As soon as the desk is clear take off your
apron and your goggles.• You are now finished with the Bunsen Burner
experiment.
