NAIDOC Public Speaking Challenge 2015
Three teams represented Bungendore Public School at the 2015 NAIDOC Public Speaking Challenge held
on Monday this week, with two teams selected to go through to the finals in Week 8, Term 3. The topic for
the public speaking challenge was: “We all stand on Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect and Celebrate” with
each team consisting of two students, one Aboriginal and one non-Aboriginal, working together to prepare
and present a 4-minute speech. Bungendore’s three teams faced three teams from Queanbeyan East Pub-
lic School and Wollondilly Public School. The members of each team were presented with a certificate of
participation following a morning tea, attended by families of the entrants. The adjudicator, Aboriginal
Community Liaison Officer Public Schools NSW, Rochelle Koster said the teams had represented their
schools well. The speeches had been well researched and prepared by the students themselves, showing
knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures in a localised context.

Win for Bungendore at the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking
local finals
Bungendore Public School student Emily Hinder has won the Years 5 & 6 division and
Charlotte Velnaar was a runner-up in the Years 3&4 division of the 2015 Illawarra & South
East Local Final of the NSW Department of Education’s Multicultural Perspectives Public
Speaking Competition held this week at Jerrabomberra Public School. Charlie Campbell and
Ellie Meggitt also represented Bungendore, delivering prepared speeches with great
confidence and skill. There were 13 speakers in each division, representing seven schools
from Crookwell to Cooma.
Adjudicator Phil Holloway praised the students on the structure of their set speeches and the
way they had engaged the attention of the audience and built a rapport to deliver social
messages on a range of multicultural issues.
“You spoke with a clear purpose and used a relaxed and conversational tone,” he said.
“Public speaking is a life skill that opens up many career paths.”
As well as presenting a prepared speech, the students were asked to deliver an impromptu
speech. The junior speakers’ topic was “Let’s get busy” and the senior speakers were given
the topic: “Creating a new future”. Only five minutes was allowed for each student to prepare
their impromptu speech.
Emily now proceeds to the regional final to be held in Wollongong in August. The winners of
the regional finals will
proceed to the state finals
to be held at the ABC
Centre in Sydney in
November.
