Interview with Sue Garside

I cannot imagine life without bulldogs!…..

This beautiful sentence told me Sue Garside, the very renowned breeder and owner of the kennel Iceglint Bulldogs during our first meeting on the Open Show a BOY 2015 in the Luton, England, where we came along with my husband to look how the show of bull-dogs is like in the land of their origin.

I remember very well on the frank joy at the moment, when she had won the whole show with her beautiful bulldog Iceglint I´m Ross and with his graceful daughter Biddle Hot Damn Girl (owner Paul Reyn-olds). While taking Picture of all the show, I had the possibility to no-tice her love for Ross, but also the consolation from all this show.

Thanks to my weakness for the red bulldogs I could not resist and I had to come to Ross and cuddle with him for a while and that was the point where our friendship with Sue have started.

Since this moment passed a month and I can say, that I absolutely understand why she is so beloved within many people and also other breeders. Her tender smile, modesty, compliancy to give a helping hand, the piece of advice or just to have a pleasant chat. Therefore I have that honour to present you Sue Garside, the international judge, specialist to the bullog breed, excellent breeder and owner of the ken-nel Iceglint Bulldogs, exhibitor and also loving mother and wife in the way how you never known her before.

Bozena: Sue, please tell us shortly about the history of the Iceglint kennel and your dogs. :-)Sue: Well we got our first bulldog in the eighties, after admiring them for many years. We could not afford to buy one before this time as we had our son to bring up. When we got our first baby girl it was love at first sight, and from then on, I was besotted. Our beautiful and fabu-lous Ch Iceglint Ivy was our foundation bitch and all our bulldogs can be traced directly back to her. She was my baby and a magnificent

showgirl but she had attitude and if she didn’t want to do something, she wouldn’t do it!! She won 6 CCs before having her first and only lit-ter (3 girls, 1 boy). She came out six months later to take her last CC and then she was retired to our sofa (of course).

Her only son became Ch Iceglint Intrepid and again he was a great showman, but more importantly, a top sire! His daughter, Ch Iceglint Intrigue was another beauty and very kind and gentle. My friends Lynn & Peter Manns had bred a super young male, Lynmans Living Legend, who I desperately wanted to use on one of my girls. We had bought in a good daughter of Intrepid, (Anne’s Treasure to Iceglint)

so we mated them and produced a super litter, of which we kept two girls, Priscilla-Anne & Sophie, & most people preferred Priscilla-Anne as she was very pretty and a light cream in colour whereas, Sophie was a fawn smut. We campaigned both as puppies but it was Sophie who proved herself, becoming a champion in three shows! We re-peated the mating & produced Ch Iceglint I’m Alfred, who was a super dog, pale cream, standard size with a superb head & front! Loved him so much and he won BIS all breeds at WELKS over around 10,000 dogs! WOW, what a result, what a dog!! We have swapped matings with Lynmans many times, usually working extremely well for both of us.

The best result has to be the mating with one of our Spike daughters : Biddle Im Roxanne Iceglint, to Lynmans Stagestruck, and this pro-duced my greatest superstar: Ch Iceglint Im Harry, my darling who we lost earlier this year aged almost nine, and it broke my heart. He was the most amazing bulldog, not only handsome and kind, but a great showman who pulled out all the stops and was at his most bril-liant in the big ring, against all of the utility group dogs! He is the joint dog CC record holder together with the great Golden Nugget and has won 42CCs, under 42 different judges. He is the only bulldog to win Bulldog of the Year on three consecutive years and won the last ever Pedigree Champion stakes finals.

My hero! His son my lovely William also became a champion, much against his will, as he hated showing, and his son Shermand is on 2CCs!

We are currently campaigning Iceglint Im Ross and having a great time.... Iceglint is here to stay.

Bozena: In which year it was founded Iceglint and how came up the name of your kennel? Iceglint….why? Sue: Iceglint was founded in 1987. It’s a lovely name and it’s very difficult with the UK KC to get your first choice of names...well so can I use sentence?...The name of our kennel I’ve always loved. It was the first choice and I’m happy for her.

Bozena: What is your daily life with dogs?Sue: Daily life with our Bulldogs is usually about checking all the dogs to make sure they r ok, putting cream on their creases, brushing them and exercising, before they have breakfast.... After breakfast they play in the paddock while I clean and change bedding etc.,and then each afternoon we walk either along the promenade or down the lane, so that road work exercise is enjoyed by us all... Play time for a while afterwards, then as it gets dark, supper & bed!!

Bozena: How do you manage to combine family and the kennel to-gether? Does your husband help you?Sue: Yes, my husband Ray is my rock!!! He is the back room boy of Iceglint and is the backbone of us, hes the glue that sticks us all to-gether!! I do the shows and Ray cares for the dogs, kennels house etc while I’m away.

Bozena: Do you make any activity with them? Sue: Yes the dogs play in the paddock and we road work each day.

Bozena: What does the bulldog as personality meaning to you?Sue: Bulldogs have a unique and fabulous personality like no other

dog. In fact, I think they are a different species! My Bulldogs amuse me every day.... They are so comical and stubborn and clever and greedy.... And they are so kind.... If I am sad, they know and they comfort me! If I’m happy, then they are completely manic, and rush about like lunatics. If it’s sunny, they laze around, if it’s wet, they stay in bed! My Bulldogs are so very special to me and I cannot imagine life without them!

Bozena: What was your first impulse to the fact that you decided to breed and not just to have a pet?Sue: Well I’ve always been competitive and when we had our Ivy, I thought she was the most beautiful bulldog in the world, so I decided to show her lol.... It’s the same with all my Bulldogs, I think they are SIMPLY THE BEST!

Bozena: How many dogs do you have now? Sue: We have seven bulldogs and a very bossy pekingese who is in charge of us all lol xx

Bozena: Why did you want to become a judge and when?Sue: I never wanted to be a judge. I was always happy showing my dogs, but judging appointments were offered to me and I could only refuse for so long!! I had made two champions up before I started judging, and have now judged many times, met some fabulous peo-ple, and fantastic dogs, and seen done stunning cities, all around the world!!

Bozena: What are the most important things for you while judging? What does mean a good bulldog for you?Sue: When I judge, I look at the dog as a whole first. I like to see clean, rounded lines, a lovely upsweep of jaw and a black eye with sour expression. Overall Impression of strength without eggageration !

Interview with Sue Garside

Bullish Magazine: Dec 2015 Page:15

Lovely front with super shoulder & placement, good depth of brisket, super back line & tail and movement MUST be sound...

Bozena: Where have you judged in the world?Sue: All over the world lol, : Japan, Brazil, Australia, Slovenia, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Holland, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Bulgaria, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and USA.

Bozena: Do you think that European exterior is different from the ex-terior in the UK? If it is different, then how and also how is the health status of dogs perceived in different countries?Sue: Yes I think it is different in all countries. For example, the dogs are smaller in the USA, taller in Scandinavia and some countries do not have the quality I like. Some countries, like the USA, have health at heart, the same as the UK, but I feel that other countries should put much more effort into breeding happy, healthy Bulldogs

Bozena: How do you see the bulldog as breed now and in the future?Sue: I think the future of our beloved breed is safe. We have made huge inroads into health testing our dogs, especially breeding stock, and we are seeing fantastic results. Our breed standard has also been amended by our KC, so that certain faults are heavily penalised. And eggageration are not so acceptable.

Bozena: Do you prefer judging or showing? Sue: I prefer to exhibit as I’m competitive and at heart I love to be with my bulldogs.

Bozena: Which dog or bitch do you admire most and why?Sue: loved Ch Kelloe White Glove, a stunning white bitch with every-thing going for her, including attitude, it’s no wonder she’s the breed record holder! A dog I greatly admire is Ch Kingrock Captain Cook, so much so that I made him my BOB when I judged at Crufts in 2014, together with another beauty, winning the BCC, Laroyal Best Kept Secret. There have been some fabulous Bulldogs over the years and

some amazing personalities. I was lucky enough to be in Spain quite recently with a good few of them and it made for a super five days.... We have some great craic, laughs and bulldog discussions! Together, with sunshine, good food, champagne, acid wit and hilarious sense of humour, there’s just one word for it: Perfect! From the view of the judge you can see a lot of health problems on bulldogs being showed in the ring.

Bozena: What do you think are generally the biggest issues and should it be corrected in the kennels?Sue: think it is distressing to see Bulldogs with poor breathing, tight nostrils, tight tails and poor hips and slipping patellas.... Bulldogs should have a round eye and we some times see eyes that are full of extropia , entropia, & are co duties that are so very painful for the dog! I really find it upsetting that people will show dogs that are obvi-ously unwell or with skin issues etc etc.... Keep your dogs in top show condition and check daily.... It always pays to take great care of your dogs, it’s the least you can do for them.... Happy bulldogging!

Bozena: What do you think about preventive health testing of bull-dogs ? Are they beneficial or unnecessary burden for some breeders? What kind of tests do you use in your kennel?Sue: I think health testing is a good thing.... The way forward.... I’m happy to test my bulldogs and they are all tested and all clear for HUU.

Bozena: What must a good judge posess ?Sue: A good eye for a bulldog, a great knowledge of our breed and breed standard, ring procedure, and certainly honesty, integrity and a strong personality. Also needed are a thick skin, and a sense of fair play!

Bozena: Do you think that the judge may help to further develop the breed?

Sue: Yes, of course. If judges continue to put up good examples of bulldogs who can move and show themselves off to great advantage in the big ring, it’s a great reflection on us as breeders to continue to strive for better all the time!

Bozena: What should the candidates or breeders know when they would like to become a judge?Sue: In the UK we have certain criteria a potential judge must meet in order to progress onto the C list, then the B list and finally, the A3and A1 list. There are exams to pass and seminars to attend, as well as “hands on” experiences available to all bulldog fanciers. Bozena: Nine years ago was born litter of puppies, from which one was your legend Iceglint I’m Harry. How did you know that tiny Harry was the right dog to whom is every breeder waiting?Sue: Well, we had a lovely litter if babies with our Roxanne & Lyn-mans Stagestruck, two boys & three girls. I had no plans to keep a boy as we already had three gorgeous males. An old friend had wait-ed two years for a puppy from me so he had pick of the boys. At five weeks he came and chose Harry, he was so worried he wouldn’t get a puppy he left the full payment on my mantle shelf, which was where it stayed for three more weeks lol!! As I didn’t want to tempt fate! When my puppies were seven weeks old they went to the vet for their first vaccination and vet check. All passed, but Harry had NO testicles! I told my friend and a week later when he saw the puppies again, he preferred young Albert, the brother with both testicles, so he took him. At 10 weeks Harry had one testicle and I had an enquiry from a di-vorced, retired policemen who wanted a companion. He wasn’t sure he wanted a dog with only one testicle though, and asked if I would give him time to think.... I said yes, sure! I never heard from him and three weeks later, when Harry was 13 weeks old, his second testicle dropped. Hallelujah!! . I was ecstatic as Harry was absolutely stun-ning! There was NO WAY he was going anywhere! Two days later the policeman phoned & said he would take him.... My reply was: “ Sorry but he’s going nowhere, he’s far too fabulous“!!!!

Interview with Sue Garside

Bozena: At what age Harry went on his first show and what was the result? When did he win his first championship, and how Ray and you reacted to this very first success?Sue: When Harry was six months & 5 days ok’d he attended his first show, a breed club open show, and he won first place in minor puppy dog, out of 12.. We were delighted!! At his last show in minor puppy, at almost nine months old, he won his first RCC, judge Peter Booth, and at his first show in puppy, he won his first CC. Judge, Lynn Manns. To say we were over the moon is an understatement!! Harrys second CC came at 13 months from junior dog, judge Kevin Davis, and his third CC and champion title, came from Pat Perkins at the bulldog club of Scotland, when Harry was 14 months and 4 days!! I immediately called Ray and we were both crying with joy & excitement!!!!

Bozena:What was Harry like as a dog? He liked the show? What was his character like?Sue: Harry was the best dog EVER!!!! He was an amazing show-man and had the sweetest, kindest most adorable nature you could imagine... He had a great sense of humour and every time WITHOUT FAIL, when we were in the utility group ring, he would cock his leg and pee on the floral decorations. Not once, but about six or seven times!!! He was well known for it & I was always getting told off!! My boy NEV-ER let me down, I could always rely on him to give of his best, and tbh, I was only needed because he didn’t have a driving licence!!! If he had, I could have stayed at home, that’s how much he needed me as a pilot. Lol

Bozena: On the conclusion of this interview, words of Sue herself….Sue: I’m trying to write a small tribute to my darling Harry.... Where do I start? To live with such a legend for almost nine years has been an honour and a privilege ... He was so incredibly handsome and kind with a wicked sense of humour and a such love of life!!! He was al-ways a comedian and always up for a laugh but incredibly kind

with it... Greedy yes, and was always up for stealing whatever he could but who cares? Not us, that’s for sure!!! He loved the sunshine and insisted on us sitting on the patio with him from dawn til dusk in the summer.... We had to bribe him to come indoors at eleven Pm at night lol.. He lived in the lounge and when we went out, would spread himself out in the sofa & sleep & would casually appear in the hall when we arrived home as though he had been on guard the whole time ....yeah right!!!! I can’t tell you how much we miss him and his presence is everywhere.... Such a comfort.... We are spending our first Christmas without him and it’s going to be hard.....merry Christ-mas BIG MAN, until we meet again.... Love you so much.. God bless xxx

I would like to thank everyone for being so kind and reading my little interview, hope I didn’t disappoint.... We are just regular people with a passion for our Bulldogs and would like to wish you all a fantastic, happy, healthy and successful 2016. God bless... I love you all!

Thank you Sue for nice interview.

Sammy - Always in our hearts!

My heart goes out to my dear friend Carol Law. Although she sold him as a puppy he always remained close to her heart. Sammy tragically died in a fire a few days ago. Thinking of you Carol! Thanks to Radka Kminiaková Krčková for making this special card of Sammy!
