School and CommunityFounded in 1930, Bullis School is an independent co-educational college preparatory day school for students in grades 3-12. A total of 647 students are enrolled, including 390 in the Upper School, grades 9-12. 100 students graduated in 2011.

Located in a suburb of Washington, D.C., Bullis admits students who will contribute in the classroom and throughout the community and who will embrace the school’s participatory approach. Students balance academics with arts and athletics, along with activities that encourage students to pursue their passions and discover new skills and interests.

MissionBullis provides a student-centered balanced experience in academics, athletics, the arts and community service. Bullis uniquely prepares all students to become caring citizens and creative, critical thinkers who will thrive in tomorrow’s world.

Educational ApproachThe school’s approach is framed by our core academic values: communication, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and resourcefulness. From a challenging college preparatory education to a full array of performing groups, athletic teams and student service clubs, Bullis provides students the chance to learn in the classroom and art studio, and on the playing fi eld and stage.

While preparing students for college, the Upper School also requires students to participate in two school sports or extra-curricular activities each year, which further cultivates personal growth and helps students to develop or refi ne interests and passions. In addition, advisory groups and other events throughout the school year focus on character development to round out the skill set that Bullis graduates take with them when they leave the school.

The Bullis Honor CodeCentral to the life and spirit of the school community is the Bullis Honor Code. Each year students renew their pledge:

• I will embrace truth and honesty in word and deed.

• I will respect the rights, backgrounds and views of others.

• I will be accountable for my actions at all times.

All students are also required to participate in two school sports or extra-curricular activities each year.

Honors and Advanced Placement CoursesHonors and AP courses receive a fi ve point “weight,” which is refl ected in a student’s cumulative Grade Point Average on his or her transcript. Students who take an AP course are required to take the AP exam.

Bullis students are encouraged to appropriately challenge themselves academically, and a typical average courseload does not exceed four honors and/or AP courses each trimester. A small number of students may exceed this number under the guidance of the academic dean.

A Global PerspectiveA key part of Bullis’ balanced approach is including opportunities for students to gain broader perspectives on their world. Locally, students regularly engage in a range of community service projects, from single events to ongoing commitments with shelters and food banks and other organizations that provide a range of services in the community. Bullis requires no community service hours for graduation; our students participate in community service because they genuinely enjoy it.

On a broader level, Bullis’ Global Studies & Service program organizes six to eight trips each year for students to travel overseas for community service and educational activity. Last year, groups constructed buildings for a school in Cambodia and homes for families in the Dominican Republic, while other student groups studied art in Italy and France, participated in the International Model U.N. Conference in St. Petersburg and performed at the Roncalli Theater Festival.

Additional intensive cross-cultural experiences are being developed for both teachers and students: new programs will create student exchanges with schools in Peru and teacher exchanges with the Ameson Foundation in China.

Accreditation and Affi liationsBullis is accredited by the Maryland State Department of Education and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The School is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools, the Secondary School Admission Test Board, the College Board, the Association of Independent Maryland Schools, the Black Student Fund and the National Association for College Admission Counseling. Bullis complies with the NACAC Statement of Principles of Good Practice.
