Camp Programs A wide array of full-day and half-day sessions allows you to create the perfect summer of fun within any schedule. And with our extensive offerings, you’re sure to find a camp that meets your needs and interests too!

Pick 3 CampsOur Pick 3 Program, offered to campers ages 9-14, allows for exploration of different interests by creating a schedule of up to three camps a day during a two-week period. You may pick one, two or three camps to attend—the flexibility is yours!

Athletic Camps Our athletic camps, led predominantly by our accomplished Bullis School coaches, offer a variety of different sports at all ability levels and combine fun with skill development. Our athletic program builds camper confidence and lifelong skills in the sport.

Specialty Camps Our specialty camps provide campers of all ages a way to dive into specific areas of interest in one- to three-week, half- or full-day sessions. What better way to spend the week than performing on stage, riding a horse or even flying an airplane!

Bulldog Day Camps The ever-popular Bulldog Day Camp is returning with an updated and enhanced program of age-specific activities that are different each week, whether campers are enrolled for one week or for seven weeks!

Bulldog Day Camp Jr. is specially designed for our youngest campers ages 3½ to 5 to take part in the Bulldog experience.

A Star is Born!Experience theater in a whole new way! Campers cultivate their talents as they learn about musical theater through acting, singing and dancing. During fun-filled days of improvisational games, campers gain theatrical knowledge, acquire technical skills and develop the confidence to take the stage. At the end of the session, campers perform what they learn in a final show for family and friends.

Archery Shoot arrows with the skill of Katniss from The Hunger Games! Campers develop hand-eye coordination and motor and listening skills as they practice proper shooting form and marksmanship. A look at archery’s history as well as its techniques, etiquette, rules and scoring gives campers a well-rounded view of archery as a sport, skill and art—it really hits the target for any camper!

Art Around the WorldDevelop, explore and create art from various countries around the world! Campers learn about the cultures and traditions of different countries across the globe through the creation of artwork. Projects may include designing a plaster of paris West African mask, weaving a Native American bowl, shaping names in Egyptian hieroglyphs, creating the architectural structure of Russian cathedrals with oil pastels and crafting a Japanese batik koi fish windsock.

Black & White Film Photography Examine the basics of traditional photography and master the fundamentals of this art form. Campers not only study the techniques of 35-millimeter film photography but also discover the beauty and complexity within black-and-white images. Campers create pinhole cameras and develop and print photographs from negatives using the dark room. Set the digital camera aside and uncover a love for black-and-white photography this summer!

Bullis Culinary Academy Prepare your favorite meals from scratch! In this highly popular camp, campers cook a new dish each day. They take home delicious recipes, while learning the importance of kitchen safety and making healthy food choices. At the end of each session, campers work together in teams to compete in an exciting cook-off by demonstrating their newly acquired culinary skills to a panel of judges.

Baker’s DozenHave fun with frosting and fondant, and develop sweet skills in baking and decorating this summer! Campers create their own cake and cupcake batter and also learn how to make quick breads and yeast breads. They explore treat toppings as they make buttercream icing, practice piping and embellish cakes and cupcakes with fondant accenting. Enjoy the delicious fun of baking your own personal treat confections!

engineering in Action* Learn fundamental science concepts while having lots of fun! Campers tease mighty gravity with hydraulic rockets, go for the bull’s eye with clothespin guns, assemble kites to cruise the summer sky and build balsa wood bridges to support hundreds of pounds. Campers become electricians working on electric circuits, batteries and motors and act as aerospace engineers building rockets. Every day is a blast!

Geology & exploration Ever wonder how the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone’s Old Faithful geyser was created? Campers learn about fascinating geological processes by experimenting with the principles of erosion, plate tectonics and rock and soil formation, in addition to creating their own fossils and crystals. Campers study evidence of floods at Great Falls National Historic Park and examine geology beyond the planet Earth.

PROVIDeR: The Rockville Science Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring a passion for lifelong exploration of science (rockvillesciencecenter.org).

Getting Started with Photography This introductory camp provides campers the excitement of capturing photographs from their own unique perspectives. Starting with the basics of digital photography, campers learn the elements necessary to compose quality photographs. Campers experience the magical world of digital photo editing using Photoshop and explore the dark room as they learn the process of developing film.

Intermediate Photography is offered the week of August 4 for those interested in taking their skills to the next level. See page 30 for further details.

I Drive SmartIn this highly regarded driver-education program, all instructors are law enforcement officers. Classroom instruction is held at Bullis School, while the behind-the-wheel portion of the class is offered off-campus at several convenient locations and is scheduled separately. A learner’s permit is required for the behind-the-wheel portion of the class.

Ages: 15+

Model uNInterested in exploring global issues through debate? Sign up for Model UN summer camp! Campers develop public speaking, negotiation and research skills as they explore the world of international diplomacy. The camp includes a weekly field trip to an embassy or international institution in Washington, D.C. and simulations of United Nations committee work. Students will leave the camp with the skills, tools and knowledge to participate in Model UN activities during the school year.

Ages: 12-14 Fee: $520 (2 blocks)

Global ConnectionsTravel the world without leaving home! This camp combines a sense of global adventure with the advantages of today’s technology to provide campers with a unique window to the world. Prepare to communicate and collaborate using 21st century resources. Campers visit great museums of the world, take 3-D tours of beautiful geographic landscapes via Google Earth, videoconference with a museum curator and participate in online and Skype educational discussions with youth from around the world. Curiosity and a sense of adventure are required!

No Strings Attached: Puppetry WorkshopMaster techniques used to bring a puppet to life! Campers uncover their imaginative side as they explore several different forms of puppetry. Areas of focus include shadow puppets, traditional hand puppets and two-person Bunraku puppets. Campers work as an ensemble, multitask and have the opportunity to let their individual creativity shine. Budding puppeteers get to experience every aspect of the artistic process from design to construction and, ultimately, performance. Each session culminates in a unique show based on camper ideas and creations.

Open for Business: entrepreneurshipLearn to be your own boss! This camp focuses on the secrets to success in entrepreneurship, teaching campers the process of starting and owning a business and growing a concept into a reality. Campers acquire skills in basic money management, organization, marketing and other strategies necessary to create a successful business. Local entrepreneur guest speakers demonstrate real success and experience with these concepts.

AAA Tournament Prep Baseball Is your team traveling to baseball tournaments this summer? Whether they are playing in local tournaments, regional AAU tournaments or national tournaments—like Cooperstown with over 100 teams—this camp is specifically designed for travel and Select Baseball players, ages 10 to 12, who plan to participate in top tournaments. Unlike any other camp in the area, this one takes players past the fundamentals of fielding, hitting, pitching and baserunning; campers study key situations and strategies which can be the difference between participating in and winning a tournament. Advanced BaseballWant to play baseball at the varsity level and beyond? Geared toward 11- to 14-year-olds who have been actively playing baseball for 3+ years, this camp is for serious players looking for an intensive camp to sharpen their skills.

This highly structured training program promotes player development by building individual skills, strength and knowledge of the game. Campers participate in throwing routines, hitting drills (on-field and cage work), bunting drills, fielding drills and pitching drills; learn baserunning techniques; and play inter-camp games. Bulldog Day CampFor more than a decade, Bulldog Day Camp has provided exciting, summer experiences for campers with a wonderful variety of daily activities. This popular program offers campers a nurturing and stimulating environment where they run, play, paint, swim, sing, laugh and make life-long friends. Activities include sports and recreation, arts and crafts, field trips and special theme days such as Tie-Dye Tuesday, Carnival Day or Bulldog Olympics.

Each week, campers enjoy an exciting field trip, such as visiting the National Zoo, viewing an IMAX film at the Air & Space Museum, picking blueberries at Butler’s Orchard or going paddle boating on Lake Needwood. Also, three times a week, campers splash and swim at the Rockville Aquatic Center.

All the World’s a StageUsing the works and practices of a Shakespearean acting troupe as a launching pad, campers form their own “company” while learning the principles of theatrical production. No experience is necessary—just a desire to act and to discover the wonderful world of Shakespeare in a nurturing environment.

The two-week camp features structured and fun performance-oriented workshops addressing text, voice, movement, character development, stage combat, dance and improvisation. In addition to a trip to Folger Theatre, this camp culminates in a short production—staged, stage-managed and performed by campers for family and friends at the end of the session.

Aviation: The Sky’s the limit!Take off into the “wild blue yonder” this summer under the direction of highly experienced certified flight instructors! During a week of wide-ranging aviation and space-related activities, campers will be both pilot and passenger in a four-passenger aircraft.

Campers learn the science and mechanics of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft and learn about flight-planning, aviation safety, airport design and reading charts—all of which is put into practice in hands-on activities. They also become rocket scientists as they study the history of space exploration and build and launch their own rockets. Campers learn from aviation experts about aerodynamics, airport architecture, the history of airplanes and careers in aviation. Engaging in art-related projects, campers also design an airplane’s graphics and the terminal of the future.

In addition, campers enjoy field trips to a nearby airport and aviation museum, such as The National Air and Space Museum in downtown Washington. Packed with fascinating elements, this camp will certainly provide a summer to remember.

Bullis at CallevaDo you have a taste for adventure? Prepare for five days of dynamic, outdoor excitement! Calleva’s action-packed outdoor adventures are guided by experienced counselors and instructors. Daily trips may include rock climbing, kayaking, rafting, caving or a ropes course. Campers should be ready to get wet, because every day there may be a chance to take a plunge!

Campers meet each morning with their assigned counselor and instructors for that day’s excursion. Circus Camp Stars“We outlaw ‘bored’ in the first five minutes of camp!” says director Michael Rosman. Featured in The Washington Post, Circus Camp Stars introduces tight wire, stilts, acrobatics, rolo bolo and physical comedy (clowning). In addition to learning juggling and plate spinning, campers develop hand-eye coordination, balance and self-confidence over the course of the week.

Instruction is age-specific, and safety is emphasized at all times in this memorable, high-energy camp. Friends and family are invited to the campers’ big performance at the end of the session. Each camper will take home a camp t-shirt and a juggling kit to continue building their skills.

Handwork Day CampGet ready for craft fun! The Handwork Day Camp offers a wide array of activities for girls and boys including knitting, crocheting, hand sewing and machine sewing. Instructors employ both their expertise in crafts as well as their child-development training to encourage campers to express themselves creatively. Handwork: Teen Fashion BootcampIn this three-week, award-winning program, aspiring designers will immerse themselves in the fashion world by learning how to execute a collection. From sketching and draping to sewing and modeling, watch your fashion dreams come to life! Budding designers take a field trip to further inspire their creations and take part in a workshop with season 1 Project Runway winner Jay McCarroll. As an exciting culmination of the program, campers produce a runway show and model their designs. At the beginning of each day, campers study a different topic affecting Montgomery County and how it compares to the nation as a whole. Using this context, campers then visit different sites each day for a related service opportunity designed to develop their sense of community and civic engagement. Areas of focus include hunger, education and the elderly. Possible service locations include Manna Food Center, A Wider Circle and Red Wiggler Community Farm. Campers have the option of earning Student Service Learning (SSL) hours for their time serving the community.

Mad Scienceeureka: Week of July 7Creative Contraption Warning: this is a camp designed for you—the Inventor! Chemicals, Cells & Crime: Week of August 4 Mad Science introduces you to life in the form of cells and organs and teaches how science can help you solve a crime! Campers learn a combination of modern and traditional martial arts along with some favorite games and entertainment. Campers hear from pre-med students, medical school students, residents and surgeons who will talk about their daily lives and what to expect from a career in medicine. Detailed information and counseling will also be provided on the admissions process for combined B.A./B.S.-MD programs and medical school admissions in general. Campers will round out their week by volunteering at Walter Reed Hospital.

TGA Premier Junior Golf: Par for the Course!Go on a golf adventure this summer! Campers enjoy the full golf experience as they play daily at Liberty Road Golf Center. They learn the rules, etiquette and fundamentals of golf and how to keep score, count strokes and judge distances to the hole. Sessions also include competition and skills contests. Young ArtistsDrawing, Painting and Printmaking: Week of June 23During this session, campers learn about line and form by working with water-colors and permanent markers. Campers explore positive and negative imagery by creating gelatin prints and tape paintings. They delve into paint by creating ab-stract and representational art employing the use of color, blending and texture.

Sculpture: Week of July 14This session’s focus is 3-D! Working with clay, campers make texture bowls and totems. Registration• Applications are required for each camper and are processed on

a first-come, first-served basis.

• The non-refundable deposit reserves placement in a camp; the deposit is applied toward the camp session fee and is strictly non-refundable unless a session is cancelled by the Summer Programs Office.

• For registrations prior to May 1, full payment is due by May 1 to ensure your child’s permanent placement in a camp and is non-refundable after May 1.

• If you register after May 1:

º Payment in full is required.

º All payments become non-refundable after May 1.

• Payment options include: credit card (VISA, Master Card or Discover), personal checks made payable to Bullis School, cashier’s check or cash. No personal checks will be accepted within two weeks of the start of the camp session.

• Bullis will charge a $40 processing fee for checks not honored by a bank.

• Bullis Summer Programs reserves the right to cancel any camp. Should this occur, registrants will receive a full refund for the canceled camp, including the deposit.

• A camper who is not picked up within 15 minutes of his/her camp session ending will be automatically enrolled in Extended Day and charged the drop-in rate. See page 39 for more details.

• For any Extended Day pickups after 6:00 p.m., late charges will accrue in the amount of $2/minute. All Extended Day drop-in charges and late fees incurred will be charged to the credit card on file after the date of attendance.

• Bullis Summer Programs reserves the right to charge the credit card on file for outstanding balances.

Program Change Requests• For any camp change requests or cancellations to existing regis-

trations, a completed “Change Request” form must be submitted to the Summer Programs Office two weeks prior to the start of the camp session. The “Change Request” form is available on the Summer Programs website under “Things to Know.”

• Changes made to existing registrations will incur a $35 change fee.

• Change requests will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis and are not guaranteed.

• Changes requested within two weeks of the camp session start date will not be considered.

• When changing from one camp session to another camp session with lower tuition and fees, the difference is non-refundable, and the $35 change fee will still apply.

• Changes from one camp session to another camp session cannot be accommodated after the session begins.

In the event that Bullis Summer Programs must close due to loss of power and/or safety concerns, an announcement will be posted on the Summer Programs website.

• Norefundswillbegivenintheeventofcampclosureduetoinclement weather, emergencies, loss of power or safety concerns.

Conduct• Campers are encouraged to leave valuable items at home. Bul-

lis Summer Programs is not responsible for lost or stolen items including cell phones and other electronic devices.

• Campersareexpectedtoconductthemselvesinamannercondu-cive to a safe and orderly environment.

• Camperswhodonotmeettheaboveexpectations,and/oraredis-ruptive to the operation of the program/camp management, may be removed from camp, and parents/guardians may be called to pick up their child. Continued disruption could result in dismissal from Bullis Summer Programs without refund and/or opportunity to re-enroll.

extended Day Extended Day is available from 7:30—9:00 a.m. and 2:30—6:00 p.m. Pre-registration for this service is strongly encouraged for planning purposes.

• AM(7:30-9:00a.m.):$60/weekpre-registered,$20/daydrop-in.• PM(2:30-6:00p.m.):$90/weekpre-registered,$30/daydrop-in.• AM/PM:$130/week.

*Week of June 30 is pro-rated. AM is $48, PM is $72 and AM/PM is $104 (daily drop-in rates remain the same as above).

Any camper not picked up within 15 minutes of their camp session ending will be automatically enrolled in Extended Day and charged the dropin rate.

For any pick-ups after 6:00 p.m., late charges will accrue in the amount of $2/minute. All Extended Day drop-in charges and late fees incurred will be charged to the credit card on file after the date of attendance. By enrolling in this service, you are agreeing to these terms; no prior notice will be given.

lunch• A hot lunch plan is available for $30 per week.

• Weekly lunch plans must be purchased one week in advance; daily lunch requests cannot be accommodated.

• Campers who have purchased a lunch plan will receive a bag lunch if they take an off-campus field trip.

• The lunch program is not recommended for Specialty camps that take daily field trips, including Bullis at Calleva, Learn & Serve, Equestrian, Fishing, TGA Premier Junior Golf Par for the Course and Wilderness & Adventure.

• The weekly menu is posted on the Summer Programs website.

Discounts• Pick 3 Discount: Choose three camps in one Pick 3 session, and

receive an $80 discount. Only one Pick 3 discount per session may be applied.

• Athletic Camp Early Bird Discount: Register on or before March 1, 2014, and receive a 10% discount (Applicable to full-day athletic camps only, excluding Tennis).

• Athletic Camp Sibling Discount: Register two or more siblings in an athletic camp the same week, and receive a 5% discount per child (Applicable to full-day athletic camps only).

• Bulldog Day Camps Early Bird Discount: Register on or before March 1, 2014, and receive a 10% discount (Applicable to Bulldog Day Camp and Bulldog Day Camp Jr. full-day only).
