GATHERING FOR WORSHIP

PRELUDE O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde gross, BWV 622 [O Man, grieve thy great sin] J.S. Bach (1685 - 1750) John Dautzenberg, Organ

WELCOME Trey Sullivan

PROCESSION, HYMN 179 Forty Days and Forty Nights HEINLEIN

CALL TO WORSHIP Kristin Campbell

We gather this day to worship God, whose words and ways challenge us. God invites us to lose our selfishness to find ourselves. God calls us to be fools in the eyes of the world, to show the wisdom of Christ Jesus. God urges us to empty ourselves to discover life’s fullness. God bids us be obedient, so we might know true freedom. We come to worship our Creator, to find challenge and nourishment for our spirits. We come to take up our cross and follow. We come to remember that God is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. Thanks be to God!

CALL TO CONFESSION Amy Butler

NUMBERING OUR DAYS

During the season of Lent, we invite you to participate by moving to one or more of the stations provided, or raise your hand for assistance. At the altar table, light a candle and offer a silent prayer. At the table near the organ, write a prayer and leave it in the box. At the back of the Sanctuary, receive an anointing of oil, a reminder that you are God’s beloved child. Or simply remain seated, using this time for contemplative prayer and meditation.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

DEPARTING TO GIVE AND TO SERVE During the season of Lent, we hear no Postlude at the conclusion of worship; rather, we exit silently in a spirit of contemplation. Ushers are stationed at the rear doors to receive our Tithes and Offerings. We thank you for your gifts and we dedicate them to the service of God, both in this place and around the world.

Following worship please join us in Woodward Hall, left as you exit the Sanctuary, for refreshments and fellowship. Be sure to check out opportunities for service during the week. Visitors, we look forward to greeting you as honored guests.

WORSHIP NUMBER YOUR DAYS Today we begin a new series for Lent as we re-examine the ways we practice piety. Perhaps the word “pious” has a negative connotation because so many have practiced their piety in ways Jesus warned against: stewardship for show, prayer for public praise, fasting for face value. What if we tried to live out a lifetime storing up real treasures? Psalm 90 is our guide, and in each Gospel passage this Lent, time is reiterated in a word or phrase. How do we number our days so that we may gain hearts of wisdom?
