Ever feel curious during your visit to Bali on why you meet so many Wayans or Ketuts? There actually are 4 common names in Bali, either for men or women. They will usually introduce themselves not with their nickname but with their commonly used names position as the first, second and so-on child in the family. For those of you who are still confused, here’s how it works:

Mostly used name for first born children is Wayan, but they also have other alternative names such as Putu, Gede or Ni Luh (for girls only). All these names indicate that he or she is the first born child.

Are always named Nyoman or Komang

The second child in Balinese family are usually named Made or Nengah that means middle, but they also just as likely to be called Ngurah or Kadek. Kadek means little brother or sister.

Are always named Ketut

For the fifth and so-on children, the cycle repeats itself. The fifth child will be called Wayan or “Wayan Balik”, which literally translates to ‘another Wayan’, the sixth child, will be named “Little Made” and so on. There might also be some variations on the combination of the names based on the caste of the family or actual event that happened when the baby was born. Here are some examples on the unique way Balinese named their children based on events, conditions, or places. Parents who work as farmer or want the child to work as farmer will probably name their first born child “Wayan Carik” in which “Carik” means Rice field. If the third child was born on the full moon, the parents would probably name the child as “I Komang Purnama”, Purnama means full moon.

However, this naming system starts to lose its popularity and replaced with more modern name. But you might find some elderlies who still use that name and it might be fun to hear some background story on how they were being named.

Put oN a helmetThis is the first step! Well, just after the one of renting your scooter, of course!

Even if it’s hot and your hairstyle does not pass,

riding without a helmet is really taking an unnecessary risk.

CheCK the sCooteRIn fact, this is rather the first step. Before renting your scooter, make sure the brakes are breaking, the lights are lighting and the horn is… honking. Even if the rental guy says “Do not worry, you will not need the rear brake! “… Weeeellll… Better choose another one then!

use the hoRNDo not fall into the popular Balinese trend of “honking before the light turns green”. But still, it’s a great way to make that truck understand that, yes, you’re there, and he is about to cut off your route.

use the sigNals! This habit is less trendy among locals, but it’s still worth mentioning that you want to turn. If you have a passenger, he or she can also shake their hand to indicate your direction (known as the “limp wrist”), a little more visible in difficult situations!

stay Calm……when you get stopped by the police. Yes, you will get stopped! Nothing to open a criminal record, but police check points are common here, looking for permits, helmets or headlights… The police like to take care of tourists (and some of their wallets …)!

have aN iNteRNatioNal dRiveR’s liCeNseThis works for everyone, and it avoids the fine in case of “permits checks”. You can ask for one in your country before coming to Bali.

FoR FaiR sKiN, a little suNsCReeN oR a sCaRF oN youR shouldeRs is ReCommeNded! You may not feel it, but waiting 24 seconds at the red traffic light can turn you into a red traffic light yourself.

weaR PlastiC helmetsYes, they are stylish, but much less durable…

weaR youR bag oN youR shouldeR

Some bad spirits are tempted to snatch bags in plain sight, and may cause you to fall. Don’t worry, this is not common, but like mom said: “Better Safe than Sorry “. So keep your small bag at your feet or under the seat, and everyone will be happy, especially Mom!

dRive too FastMom also says it all the time! And she is right: Bali is full of dogs, frogs, holes in the road … All of which do not necessarily leave you time to slow down before appearing.

dRiNK beFoRe taKiNg the haNdlebaRsIn sync with the series “Mom said,” I have to add the famous “Don’t drink and drive “! Driving in Bali at night is already far from relaxing, so it’s not going to help you by zig-zagging even more.

FoRget the RaiN Coat… Especially in the rainy season! You may experience an unwanted shower just driving down the street. So, if your rain poncho is always in the bike seat, no need to get your shirt drenched upon arrival!

dRiviNg too NeaR the edge oF the RoadwayThis is where most of the holes, bumps, lots of sand, gravel, dogs, etc. lay hidden…

FoRget that iN bali, we dRive oN the leFt!I almost forgot to warn you! So, everything that you imagined while reading my article: Flip it! The steering wheel (of the car) is on the right, you pass on the right …

doN’t Ride oNeThere is no real reason to ride a scooter in Bali. Around town, taxis are cheap and the driver will wait for you if you need to stop and do a bit of shopping. Also most places are within walking distance. Think of all the things you will miss and the people you won’t meet if you zip by on a scooter.

All the Tumpek

Ceremonies in BaliBali, as usually being called “the Island of Gods” is rich with traditional cultures, so it is a common thing to see Balinese Hindus pray and use Canang Sari as a part of a larger offering. One of the ceremonies that not too many people know about is Tumpek Ceremony. Tumpek days signify the meeting of a Saniscara weekday (Saturday) Kliwon based on Balinese calendar system. There are six Tumpek ceremonies which spread over a 210 day cycle called Pawukon.

16

1. tumPeK laNdePIn the old days, Tumpak Landep was a ritual ceremony for sacred weapon such as Keris (Daggers) and Pedang (Swords). Nowadays, Tumpek Landep is a ceremonial day for object made from metal or iron and other objects that bring positive benefits in human’s daily life activities such as vehicles, electronic devices, machinery and other objects. It is also a ceremony to remind us to sharpen our minds so that various problems of life can be overcame with goodness, truth and what is right.

2. tumPeK uduhAlso known as Tumpek Wariga or Tumpek Pengatag, Tumpek Bubuh is a blessing ceremony that is being held for every plantation and farm throughout Bali. This ceremony functions as expression of gratitude to God for the fertile crops that has grown well and for the abundant production of fruit or flowers. The uniqueness Tumpek Uduh is in which during the Ceremony, the people will give an instruction to the trees and tapping the trees three times to wake it up and ask the trees to produce more fruits in the 25 days time span left for “Galungan” Ceremony.

3. tumPeK KuNiNgaNTumpek Kuningan is ceremony that is being held at the end of 10 day festivities of Galungan, at the Saturday of Kuningan. This is one of the big ceremonies that considered very pious by Balinese people. Tumpek Kuningan is the day when Gods and Pitara return to earth to bestow physical and spiritual prosperity on humanity, and to bless all beings in the universe.

4. tumPeK KRulutA month after Tumpek Kuningan, Balinese Hindus celebrate Tumpek Krulut. This is a

special day to pay homage to the musical instruments, masks, dance costumes and bronze gamelan used in some religious ceremonies.Offerings are laid out in front of the largest gong, prayers are recited, and holy water is sprinkled on the instruments. Tumpek Klurut also functions as an expression of gratitude to God in his manifestation as Sang Hyang Iswara.

5. tumPeK KaNdaNgAlso known as Tumpek Uye, is the day when Balinese Hindus make offering to animals as an important part of the ecosystem supporting such as cows, pigs, and buffalo. The animals are washed, given special fodder and dressed in ceremonial cloth. The worship is manifested by giving thanksgiving ceremony to all animals, particularly cattle. On Tumpek Kandang, the Hindus make a ritual to venerate the Almighty God as Shiva or Pasupati, which maintains all beings in this universe.

6. tumPeK wayaNgTumpek Wayang is the last Tumpek in the six sequences existing in the cycle of Balinese pawukon-based calendar. On this occasion, a set of special offering is presented to Sang Hyang Iswara, Lord of Puppeteers. “Tumpek Wayang” is the most important day for owners of leather puppets and puppeteers when they present special homage to their leather puppets “Wayang”. The puppets are taken from their box “Keropak”, placed in position just as if an actual performance were being given and blessed by the owner. A “Dalang” puppeteer will remove all his puppets from storage and set them all up to receive the offerings.
