Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, June 10, 2012 – Two‐time defending champions and No. 1 in the world rankings USA defeated Dominican Republic in straight sets (25‐18, 25‐19, 25‐15) for their third victory in the opening weekend of the FIVB World Grand Prix on Sunday.

Destinee Hooker and Jordan Larson topped the charts of USA with 17 and 12 points respectively. Danielle Scott‐Arruda contributed 9 points including three blocks and Logan Tom added 8 with four service winners. Bethania De la Cruz with 15 points led Dominican Republic.

The Americans edged their rivals 8‐7 in blocks and were the superior side in aces 7‐3. The winners made 12 unforced errors to 21 by the defeated side.

“I am glad with our performance,” USA coach Hugh McCutcheon said. “Congratulations to Dominican Republic for the excellent organization and for the fan support. We had a good service line today and we were able to attack with effectiveness. USA is satisfied with the job done by this group.”

In the other match of Sunday:

Germany trounced Chinese Taipei in straight sets (25‐11, 25‐15, 25‐15) to claim their second victory in Pool B.

Germany put on a volleyball clinic with consistent execution in all facets of the game while Chinese Taipei made a big effort to compete against a superior opponent both in size and technique.

Germany held a big advantage in the aces department 12‐3 and also in the blocking category 8‐2.

Maren Brinker and Margareta Kozuch led Germany with 14 and 12 points respectively while Christiane Furst added nine. Teng Yen‐Min was the best of defeated side with 10 points.

“I want to congratulate the organizers of the Grand Prix in Santo Domingo,” Germany’s coach Giovanni Guidetti said. “The Gym is beautiful and very functional. I also want to congratulate my team for being consistent during the tournament. We lost to USA but overall we feel satisfied since our goal was to improve our performance.”
