Men’s summary

Top U.S. and Canadian Teams Prevail at North Bay Beach Tour Stop

NORTH BAY, Ontario, Canada. July 01, 2016 : There were challenging rainy conditions today the Canor Molson Sand Centre on Lake Nipissing in North Bay, but the top-ranked teams did not disappoint on the beach courts.

Canadian and U.S. teams dominated in both the men’s and women’s events.

In the men’s event, Miles Evans and Spencer McLachlin, the top-ranked U.S. team, beat Canada 3 in three sets, while the second-ranked U.S. team of Adam Roberts and Marty Lorenz easily beat El Salvador’s Carlos Escobar and David Vargas, also known Tato and Pepe.

The top-ranked Canadian team of Mike Plantinga and Cam Wheelan – gold medalists this year at Costa Rica and silver medalists at the Cayman Islands event – beat countrymen James Battiston and Sergiy Grabovskyy in two sets. Battiston and Grabovskyy were defeated by the U.S. team of Evans and McLachin, but in three sets.

The young Canadian team of MacNeil and Towe managed a clear win over El Salvador, but earlier lost to Canadian’s second-ranked team Christian Redmann and Felipe Humana-Paredes, who dominated that Canada match up.

A late afternoon match between Canada 2 and USA 2 was postponed until 10 am local time on Saturday due to weather conditions. All pool play resumes on Saturday at 10 am Eastern time.

This is the third year in a row that at NORCECA beach tour stop has come to North Bay, and it is the only North American stop this year.

Women’s summary

Canada and the U.S.A. Dominate in North Bay NORTH BAY, Ontario, Canada. July 01, 2016 : It was Canada’s national holiday, but that didn’t keep the rain away from the Canor Molson Sand Centre on Lake Nipissing in North Bay. Still the beach volleyball played on with Canadian and U.S. teams looking strong on day one.

On the women’s side, previous medalists on the NORCECA circuit this year (including gold at La Paz), Brandie Wilkerson and Julie Gordon beat Americans Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes, who were bronze medalists in North Bay last year. It was an extra special win for Wilkerson, who celebrated her birthday today.

Hughes and Claes went on to dominate Trinidad and Tobago’s Ayana Dyette and Taija Thomas 21-8, 21-9 in the final match of the day.

Also coming out on top were Rachel Cockrell and Camille Saxton beating Guadeloupe’s Caroline Reb and Fanny Katarzynski. It was a closer match when the Guadeloupe duo went up against the US Virgin Islands, but still Amber Bennett and Melanie Valenciana (ISV) managed the win 2-1.

Another decisive win for the Americans came when Alison McColloch and Kelly Reeves beat Canada’s fourth entry on the women’s side, Amanda Harnett and Kelsey Veltman 21-8, 21-16. Earlier Megan Nagy and Marie Christine Lapointe, also of the home country, beat Harnett and Veltman 2-0.

Action continues on Saturday morning at 10 am Eastern time.

Canadian and U.S. teams dominated in both the men’s and women’s events.

In the men’s event, Miles Evans and Spencer McLachlin, the top-ranked U.S. team, beat Canada 3 in three sets, while the second-ranked U.S. team of Adam Roberts and Marty Lorenz easily beat El Salvador’s Carlos Escobar and David Vargas, also known Tato and Pepe.
