JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY EVENT

AT ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE

Profiles in Healing:

Historical Anecdotes That Have Lead To Healing Between Nations, Races

and Religious Communities

This course reviews and explores the meaning of a number of historical anecdotes that have contributed to healing between previously warring nations, races and religious communities. It focuses on the actions of individuals who rise above normal human nature to sent an example of reconciliation as an alternative to revenge and reparation. As an example, it will feature incidents that have led to the acceptance of Germany back into the community of nations after a separation that included two world wars. The unlikely cast of characters includes soldiers singing Christmas carols across the no-man’s land of certain death in World War I; a captured high-ranking German general who speaks the truth in captivity, a group of students at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich who speak out against the Nazi regime; an oboist at the Pittsburgh Symphony who “invades: the home of Richard Strauss in Garmisch at the conclusion of World War, II; a woman sent to a Nazi concentration camp with her sister, who subsequently opens a rehabilitation center for former Nazi collaborators; and a candy bomber. This course is offered at Saint Maximilian Kolbe consistent with the Extraordinary Year Jubilee of Mercy. The course is normally offered as five 70-minute sessions, but consider taking just the first introductory session and if there is sufficient interest, the remaining sessions will be offered. The first introductory session will be held on Wednesday, February 17th at 7 PM in the Maximilian Room. Additional sessions would be held on February 24, March 2, 9, 16. If you plan to attend, please call the Rectory to RSVP.

“Change for Life”

The St. Maximilian Kolbe Knights of Columbus is conducting its annual “Change for Life” fundraising effort from January 10th to February 7th in support of local pro-life - family oriented charities. Your donations help local women and children in crisis by supporting the charities identified below. (A handout is available in the vestibule which describes what each charity does.) We ask each parish family to take a baby bottle or two after Mass during the period of January 10th to February 7th and over that period, fill the bottles with loose change accumulated during these weeks. Then, return the bottles to church on or before Sunday, February 7th. A baby bottle receptacle will be available in the church vestibule or in the bookstore for returning the bottles during and after this period. We ask you to support this important and worthy cause.
