HARVARD CLUB OF BOSTON

BULLETINOCTOBER 2019

Weddings at the Club are special year-round, but fall celebrations are particularly beautiful.

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

GENERAL MANAGER’S LETTER

1

Dear Members,

Our fiscal year 2019 has ended and I am pleased to report that our sales and net income have far exceeded projections. Our annual audit will be beginning soon and reports for our Annual Meeting on Wednesday, April 1, 2020 will be shared upon completion. A special thanks to all of our members who have supported the Club over the last twelve months.

Projections for fiscal year 2020 are optimistic. Veritas restaurant continues to outperform year over year and our banquet, member event, overnight room, and athletic activities have all seen improved results. With the Club being so active, this is the perfect time to assist us in the recruitment of new members.

We continue to invest in staff training and development. A “service culture task force” has been created and our initial roll out of the program has been completed. We will once again be sending out our annual “Service Satisfaction” 10 second survey in November. I kindly ask that you provide us with your feedback.

Finally, the Club has instituted a “NPS” or Net Promoter Score in an effort to create a benchmark for this satisfaction tool and provide us data for areas of improvement.

Please feel free to contact me directly at [email protected] or 617-450-8400 if I can be of service to you.

Sincerely,

Steven P. Cummings, CCM, CCEGeneral Manager

Dear Members,

Every October over the past quarter century, the Harvard Club of Boston hosts a Prize Book Breakfast in our magnificent Harvard Hall. As defined by the Harvard Alumni Association, the Prize Book is awarded to an outstanding student in the junior class who “combines excellence in scholarship and high character, with achievement in other fields.” Harvard Clubs around the world host these breakfasts and award over 1900 total Prize Books annually. Last year, the Harvard Club Foundation alone sent out 322 books to 259 schools! The energy, vigor and enthusiasm of this event makes it the staff’s most popular, as we see many of the book recipients attend and graduate from Harvard, and go on to become members of our Club. The Board of Governors and I happily recognize 45-year Member Dr. Barbara D. Pulaski, ph’73, Chair Harvard Club Prize Book Committee for her continued dedication and loyalty in ensuring we honor our community’s future generations of leaders in this famed forum. Dr. Pulaski is a prized Harvard Club gem! Awards and recognition are important for our youth, and these high school juniors in later years will look back fondly at their achievements. However, the future generations expect more from us than mere accolades. They expect us, as wise and experienced stewards, to leave them a legacy that they too can build upon for the next generation, and so on in perpetuity. The Board and I passionately believe that our present Harvard Club, while beloved and financially successful, will no longer be relevant in a generation or two without significant structural and programming changes. We respectfully ask for your informed and earned support as we proceed with our planning and negotiations. We are firm in our belief that now is the appropriate time to act in building and growing a Harvard Club of Boston not for our grandparents, but for our grandchildren. We intend to pass the torch to future generations, not drop it. You can learn a great deal about the Board’s development planning and vision by coming to our Special Meeting on Wednesday 2 October at 6:30 pm. In addition, we are continuing our “Roundtable for the Future” series. Please refer to the roundtable schedule on page 3. I encourage you to contact me at [email protected] with your suggestions, concerns or general remarks.

Donec iterum, Veritas.

AUTHOR SERIES WITH DAN BOYNEThursday, October 10, 20196:30 pm Reception6:45 pm Lecture followed by Q&A and Book SigningBack bay Clubhouse

Don’t miss this special Author Series with Dan Boyne, director of Recreational Rowing at Harvard and author of The Seven Seat. Boyne oversees the intramural rowing program and Harvard’s sculling program and coordinates the graduate schools’ rowing clubs. In The Seven Seat, Boyne tells the humorous story of his freshman year of crew, including sub-plot of personal redemption against an insufferable football player who bullied him throughout high school. After being accepted at Trinity College in Hartford, CT, Boyne takes up rowing and quickly experiences the unique rigors, rewards and colorful personalities of the sport, not knowing that his nemesis had decided to try out for crew, at rival school Coast Guard Academy. As racing season approaches, Boyne becomes part of an exceptional freshman lightweight boat, with high hopes to win the National Championships, but his final fears are realized when he discovers that his old high school

archenemy is rowing in the very same position as he is—the seven seat. Head of the Charles Regatta takes over the city of Boston beginning October 19, 2019 and this discussion is the perfect way to get into the rowing spirit.

COCKTAILS & PUBLIC POLICY: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Wednesday, October 2, 20196:30 pm Registration & Mingling 7:00 pm Discussion followed by Q&ABack Bay Clubhouse

Artificial Intelligence is advancing, reflecting a growing tendency to delegate decision-making to algorithms. Big data, namely the availability of enormous volumes of data on all kinds of human activity, further enhances the effectiveness of algorithms. New technology can assist, but also threaten, the goals surrounding human rights. In the short-term, these dangers include perpetuating bias in algorithmic reasoning. In the longer term, concerns surround the ownership of data, the increasing power of technology companies, and changes in the nature of work. This C&PP explores the ways in which artificial intelligence will affect human life, and its emerging ethics and human rights-related questions.

Price per person: $15 (plus *Club charge & tax) includes reception fare and lecture. A cash bar will be available.

PUBLIC POLICY BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP

Friday, October 11, 20198:00 am—9:00 am Downtown ClubhouseThe Fifth Risk by Michael Lewis, is our October selection. What are the consequences if the people given control over our government have no idea how it works? “The election happened,” remembers Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, then deputy secretary of the Department of Energy. “And then there was radio silence.” Trump appointees were few and far between; those that did show up were shockingly uninformed about the functions of their new workplace. Some even threw away the briefing books that had been prepared for them. Michael Lewis gives us a look at a government under attack by its own leaders. Optional à la carte breakfast service will be available in The Crimson starting at 7:00 am. Members and guests are welcome.*

*Participation fee for non-members (must be registered as a guest by a member): $5, includes discussion and coffee. Registration for members is required for this complimentary event.

AUTHOR SERIES WITH SEAN CARROLLThursday, October 24, 20196:15 pm Registration and Mingling6:30 pm Lecture Followed by Q&ABack Bay Clubhouse

New York Times bestselling author and Caltech physicist Sean Carroll is ready to turn the physics world on its head by boldly standing behind one of the most contentious theories in quantum physics—the Many Worlds Theory. In his new book, Something Deeply Hidden: Quantum Worlds and the Emergence of Spacetime, Carroll suggests that there are multiple copies of you…and everything else in our universe.

Carroll explains that physics has been in crisis since 1927 and there are many physicists that would prefer to keep that crisis under wraps. The Many Worlds Theory states that every time there is a quantum event, a world splits off with everything in it the same, except in that other world that quantum event didn’t happen. For example, as you read this, you are splitting into multiple copies of yourself thousands of times per second. Those new copies of you are spinning out into the universe (splitting again and again), but you’ll never come into contact with even one of them.

Carroll has a talent for making mind blowing physics concepts amazingly clear. His growing popularity among readers of all types (scientists and non-scientists alike) makes him one of a handful of physicists that can sell out a1,400-seat theatre on a Saturday night to talk about quantum mechanics to a crowd of cheering fans. Sean Carroll is a theoretical physicist at the California Institute of Technology, host of the Mindscape podcast, and author of From Eternity to Here, The Particle at the End of the Universe, and The Big Picture. He has been awarded prizes and fellowships by the National Science Foundation, NASA, the American Institute of Physics, and the Royal Society of London, among many others.

If you enjoy stimulating conversations about good books, join our Book Club. For October, we will read The Testaments by Margaret Atwood.

More than fifteen years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. As Atwood unfolds The Testaments, she opens up the innermost workings of Gilead as each woman is forced to come to terms with who she is, and how far she will go for what she believes.

As part of our Harvard Club with a Heart initiative, we would like to congratulate Burt, Costa, Angel and Martha from the Downtown Clubhouse for completing the Ninth Annual ‘Ride for Angels’ on September 7, 2019. The ride raised funds for Angel Flight Northeast, which provides free flights to those who need access to medical care. For more information about the organization or to donate, visit http://www.angelflightne.org/.

We look forward to seeing you at the Club.

AUTHOR SERIES WITH MAX GOMEZMonday, November 4, 20196:00 pm Registration & Mingling6:15 pm Lecture followed by Q&ABack Bay Clubhouse

Dr. Max Gomez is an author and an award-winning broadcast journalist. He is an expert moderator, speaker, emcee and is renowned for his clear, concise presentations of complex medical information to a wide range of audiences. In his book Cells Are the New Cure, Dr. Gomez takes you on a tour of the most exciting and leading-edge developments in medicine. You’ll meet the doctors performing the lifesaving research, and the patients who have survived illnesses that were once considered a death sentence.

The key to these breakthroughs is the use of living cells as medicine instead of traditional drugs. Research has found that our bodies are virtual treasure troves of adult cells that act as agents of remarkable healing and repair. These cells are called adult stem cells because they resemble embryonic cells in their ability able to transform into many other cell types, but without the ethical and moral concerns of embryonic cells.

Promising treatments in more than 35,000 clinical trials

could have dramatic impacts on cancer, autoimmune diseases, organ replacement, heart disease, and even aging itself. These treatments, which are saving the lives of patients in the trials, will soon be rolled to the medical community at large.

Dr. Gomez graduated cum laude from Princeton University, with a Ph.D. from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He was also a N.I.H. Postdoctoral Fellow at New York’s Rockefeller University. He has served on the national board of directors for the American Heart Association, the Princeton Alumni Weekly and the Partnership for After School Education. Dr. Gomez has produced award-winning health and science segments and has reported for Dateline, Today Show and 48 Hours. Over nearly three decades, he’s earned nine Emmy Awards, three New York State Broadcasters Association awards and UPIs Best Documentary award.
