PRESIDENT’S LETTER

GENERAL MANAGER’S LETTER

1

Dear Members,

September marks the Autumnal Equinox, a time when we transition from summer into fall. Daylight will continue to diminish until December’s winter solstice, when our days will begin to grow longer until the cycle starts anew with June’s summer solstice. This seasonal renewal is no more evident than in the student surge we see in Boston and Cambridge each year. Part of any community’s greatness lies in its ability to adapt to change whether it be manifest in the four seasons, the local influx of first-year students, or embracing transformational ideas. Since our original Trinity Financial development proposal announcement in mid-July, the Board and I have engaged with over 200 members, all inquisitive and interested in healthy information gathering. We have learned that the vast majority of these members are not change averse; but they do want to learn the facts i.e. how the proposed development will affect them, the HCB community, our neighbors, and the long-term fiscal health of the Club.

To that end, Steve Cummings, Trinity and I have heldseveral member meetings to date, and we will continuethem after Labor Day. Contained herein is the latest“Roundtable for the Future” meeting schedule (page 4). We strongly encourage our members to attend these meetings, or contact me directly with your questions/concerns on the project. As you navigate the member-meeting dates, please be aware of our extraordinary post-Labor Day programming lineup. While the Club has featured startup companies in the past, this month for the first time we will showcase a startup venture out of Harvard’s Department of Philosophy, ThinkerAnalytix. On Wednesday 25 September, ThinkerAnalytix leaders in concert with Harvard Professors Ned Hall and Sean Kelley will lead a discussion on The Promise of Argument Mapping. In a moderated panel format, they will explore argument mapping’s potential for enriching philosophical, scientific, political and civic engagement.

And in the interest of promoting open, honest, and civil engagement, we want to hear from our members! I encourage you to contact me at [email protected] with your suggestions, concerns or general remarks.

Donec iterum, Veritas.

Matt Hegarty ‘82President, Harvard Club of Boston

THE PROMISE OF ARGUMENT MAPPINGHARVARD PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT FACULTY AND THINKERANALYTIX LEADERS

Wednesday, September 25, 20196:30 pm Reception7:00 pm Panel Discussion followed by Q&A8:15 pm Reception Continues Back Bay Clubhouse

Argument mapping is a visual method of displaying how reasons work to support a claim. A map exposes the fundamental structure of the argument so that everyone can see how all the reasons fit together. Join us to learn how argument mapping can develop critical thinking and reasoning skills, and what the practical benefits in terms of success in school and the workplace are.

Professors Ned Hall and Sean Kelly of Harvard’s Philosophy Department, and their pioneering colleagues at ThinkerAnalytix, will discuss the development and promise of argument mapping. The stated values of ThinkerAnalytics reveal the intentions and aspirations of argument mapping, so students can: • Think courageously to challenge beliefs and

institutions.• Experience the process of changing their minds. • Listen rigorously and work to understand those they

disagree with.

• Experience analysis and debate as exciting and constructive.

Professor Hall states, “the fact that we recognize a common framework means that your view is becoming intelligible to me.”

We will also explore argument mapping’s potential for enriching philosophical, scientific, political and civic engagement. To see an interactive argument mapping experience, click here.

Professor Hall is the Norman E. Vuilleumier Professor of Philosophy and Chair of the Department; and Sean Kelly is the Teresa G. and Ferdinand F. Martignetti Professor of Philosophy and Past Chair. Both serve on ThinkerAnalytix’s advisory board.

Please register early for this special complimentary event.

COCKTAILS & PUBLIC POLICY: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Wednesday, October 2, 20196:30 pm Registration & Mingling 7:00 pm Discussion followed by Q&ABack Bay Clubhouse

Artificial Intelligence is advancing, reflecting a growing tendency to delegate decision-making to algorithms. Big data, namely the availability of enormous volumes of data on all kinds of human activity, further enhances the effectiveness of algorithms. New technology can assist, but also threaten, the goals surrounding human rights. In the short-term, these dangers include perpetuating bias in algorithmic reasoning. In the longer term, concerns surround the ownership of data, the increasing power of technology companies, and changes in the nature of work. This C&PP explores the ways in which artificial intelligence will affect human life, and its emerging ethics and human rights-related questions.

CHEF’S CORNER

Dear Members,

In addition to regularly adding new dishes to the Club’s menus, we continue to expand the list of local vendors and farms from which we source our ingredients.

Fresh ingredients are key to any great meal, but working with industry leaders who put the same care into their offerings as we do is equally as important. Here are just a few of those vendors:

Great Hill Blue Cheeses in Marion, MAMaplebrook Farms in Bennington, VTVermont Creamery in Websterville, VTOakhurst Dairy Farm in Portland, MEFarming Turtles in Exeter, RI

Wards Berry Farm in Sharon, MAJasper Hill Farms in Greensboro, VTFoley Fish Company in Boston, MABlue Hill Bay in Hancock, ME

I’m excited to announce that on Saturday mornings for the months of September and October, we’ve added a new omelet station to our continental breakfast for $14 per person (plus *Club & tax). Our chef will prepare an omelete with your choice of fillings, or eggs any style, made to order.

We look forward to seeing you at the Club.

Chef Dean Moore

Congratulations to Martha Dietrich, our Sous Chef at the Downtown Clubhouse, for winning this year’s Battle of the Chefs.

Our culinary team had some outstanding entries, but Martha’s smoked sea bass carpaccio with a charred jalapeno, mango coulis, American caviar, plantain crisps and baby greens was the crowd favorite.

For September, we’re adding this winning appetizer to our Downtown Clubhouse menu for $18 (plus *Club charge & tax).

Available at the Downtown Clubhouse only.

Rimsky-Korsakov String Quartet

PUBLIC POLICY BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP

Friday, October 11, 20198:00 am—9:00 am Downtown ClubhouseThe Fifth Risk by Michael Lewis, is our October selection. What are the consequences if the people given control over our government have no idea how it works? “The election happened,” remembers Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, then deputy secretary of the Department of Energy. “And then there was radio silence.” Trump appointees were few and far between; those that did show up were shockingly uninformed about the functions of their new workplace. Some even threw away the briefing books that had been prepared for them. Michael Lewis gives us a look at a government under attack by its own leaders. Optional à la carte breakfast service will be available in The Crimson starting at 7:00 am. Members and guests are welcome.**Participation fee for non-members (must be registered as a guest by a member): $5, includes discussion and coffee. Registration for members is required for this complimentary event.Click here to register.
