About “The World Meeting of Families” Excitement for the World Meeting of Families has been building on the East Coast since 2012, when Pope Benedict XVI announced to a million Mass-goers at the 7th such meeting in Milan, Italy, that Philadelphia would be the site of the next meeting. When Catholics in the City of Brotherly Love caught wind of the announcement, many were oblivious to its impact. However, the scope and importance has gradu-ally come into focus in preparation for September 22-27 when Philadelphians will welcome the world—and Pope Francis, too! World Meetings of Families have been occurring every few years in different cities around the globe since 1994. Saint John Paul II convened the first meeting in Rome to mark the United Nations’ International Year of the Family. Since then the gathering has taken place in Rio de Janeiro; Manila; Valencia, Spain, Mexico City and Milan, with a return trip to Rome during the Jubilee Year of 2000. This year’s event in Philadelphia marks the first time the World Meeting of Families has landed in the Unit-ed States. The U. S. has not hosted a global gathering of Catholics on this scale since the 1993 World Youth Day in Denver. The theme of this Meeting is “Love is Our Mis-sion: The Family Fully Alive”. The meeting will be de-voted to strengthening the bonds of families throughout the world, to support and promote the role of the family as the fundamental building block of society, and to celebrate the role that each family, each domestic church plays in sharing the joy of the Gospel and enabling the fullness of life to break forth in our world. Every three years, the World Meeting of Families gives the Church and the world a chance to come together in celebration of the community within which we are all first called to love. This September all can be a part of the joy as our Church reflects on the family’s mission of love. And if you cannot be part of the gathering in body, be a part of it in spirit. Tune in to the television coverage and follow the event on the internet and your favorite Catholic blogs. And most of all, pray. Pray for families. Pray for meeting participants. And pray for our Holy Father, that he can continue to inspire so many to enter more fully into the joy of the Gospel and the blessed life of the family.

Gospel John 6:51-58 Reflection Once again, Jesus. the Teacher, is having a hard time getting through to his listeners. They resist his teaching that he is the living bread from heaven. When they continue to object, Jesus assures them that his flesh is real food and his blood is real drink. If they do not "feed on" him, they will have no life in them. We are blessed because we can share the Living Bread at every Eucharist. As we satisfy our spiritual hunger, we remember those who hunger for food, shelter, friendship, or faith. We consider how we can respond to the hungers of the world. How do you think receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus makes a difference in your life? What do you think are some of the spiritu-al hungers of people your age in the world today? =========================

STEWARDSHIP:

Even though we are told that if we seek the Lord, we shall not want, in the second reading St. Paul reminds us that, thus blessed by the Lord, the good steward should “give thanks to God the Father al-ways and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

=================================

Catholic Media Productions presents - THE MYSTERY OF THE SHROUD OF TURIN The Shroud of Turin is a piece of cloth that bears the imprint of the body of a crucified man whose execution resembles the crucifixion of Jesus as described in the Gospels. What contributes to the mystery of this cloth are two facts: (1) the image is a perfect negative imprint, as we find in photography today, and (2) science has not been able to explain fully how the imprint was made. Do you want to know more about the Shroud of Turin? Visit wwwwebelieveshow.org

“We believe” is a radio and television show, pro-duced by Catholic Media Productions, in accordance with the documents of the Second Vatican Council. Its founder James F. Walsh Jr. is a Roman Catholic deacon. Dr. Richard Shriver, a protestant minister, is a permanent guest. Together , in two episodes, they describe the history and the controversy surrounding this relic and invite you to draw your own conclusion on whether this is real or a hoax.

AN APPEAL FROM POPE FRANCIS: The encyclical letter, Laudato Si, is the new appeal from Pope Francis addressed to “every person living on this planet” for an inclusive dialogue about how we are shap-ing the future of our planet. Pope Francis calls the Church and the world to acknowledge the urgency of our environ-mental challenges and to join him in embarking on a new path. The home that has been entrusted to us to use, not abuse, is being drastically harmed by pollution, waste, the “throwaway culture” endangering water, air, soil and all living creatures. Following is some - Earthly Advice from Pope Francis: . Take a little time to consider what our sister Earth needs from you. • Practice the three R’s. Reduce, Reuse. Recycle. Per-

haps even add a fourth one– Refrain from buying more things.

• Can you walk instead of drive? Take the bus or sub-way? Share with someone going the same way?

• Don’t give in to denial or resignation. Think of the environmental issue that most worries you and pray to the Holy Spirit about it. “Come Holy Spirit. Renew the face of the earth.”

• 200 plants, insects, birds, and mammal become ex-tinct each day. What dies when a new mall or casino is built? Think about what our overbuilding is doing to the natural world. Decide where you will take a stand.

• Talk with each other. Such serious issues need to be “reframed and enriched again and again.” Open your-self to new ways to see.

• Pray a——— Prayer for our Earth:

All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures, You em-brace with your tenderness all that exists. Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty. Fill us with peace, that, we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one. O God of the poor, help us to rescue the aban-doned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes. Bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty, not pol-lution and destruction. Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth. Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey toward your infinite light. We thank you for being with us each day. En-courage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love and peace. Amen.
