Dear Parish Family,

Peace and all good! This weekend’s Gospel from John(14:1-14) is one that is often read at funeral Masses —and for a very good reason. We encounter Jesus at aparticularly poignant moment in His ministry. He is withhis disciples, sharing his last Passover meal with hisclosest friends, the people He loved most deeply while onthis earth. He knows that He is about to face his ownsuffering and death, and his own heart is breaking. Yet,He is still able to console and comfort them, even thoughHe knows full well that they themselves, at least for awhile, will deny and abandon Him.

Jesus promises his disciples—and us—a place withHimself. “In my Father’s house are many rooms,” He says(14:2). Some translations use the word “mansions.” I likethat one better. Imagine, that people who have struggled

so hard in this life should receive not just a littleapartment or bungalow, but an incredible palace—what asign of God’s justice and superabundant loving kindness!Jesus also promises that He will “come again and take youto [Himself], that where [He is] you also may be.” (14:3).God will never abandon us; we have the promise of Jesusthat as our lives come to a close, He himself will escort ushome to paradise, where we will never again know pain,poverty, confusion, doubt or fear.

This is not just “pie in the sky when you die”. We arecalled to take Jesus at His word and to trust Him: in faithand “on” faith. That takes great confidence, courage andstrength. And above all, a willingness to surrendercompletely to God’s love. We cannot do it alone; weneed the grace of the Spirit of Jesus. And we need thesupport of one another along the way. This is what wecontinue to celebrate and to learn as we integrate themessage of Easter confidence and joy into our lives.

Elsewhere in the ParishLayoffs at the Old Mission. As you may already know,last Wednesday, May 11, eleven employees of OldMission San Luis Rey were laid off from their jobs. Like so

many other institutions, both corporate and charitable,the Old Mission has been severely affected by theeconomic downturn of recent years. Current staff cuts areintended to help the Old Mission to stabilize its financialsituation. The staffing cuts have been painful for allconcerned. We owe our thanks and gratitude to all whohave given so many years of generous service, and we

keep them and their families in our prayers.According to Father David Gaa, ofm, Executive Director

of the Old Mission, despite the staffing cutbacks, normalday to day activities will not be affected. The historic OldMission church will continue to be open daily topilgrims and parishioners. The gift shop, retreat center,and cemetery activities will continue, as well as theHeritage Ball and other celebrations. Plans will continuefor a capital campaign and future projects such as theretrofitting of the Old Mission church.

Many parishioners and others are unaware that the Old

Mission and the Parish are two separate institutionalentities, with completely separate organization,programs, and finances. The Parish is not directly affectedby the layoffs at the Old Mission.

The Franciscan friars live at the Mission and serve atboth the Old Mission and the Parish. We’ve been heresince 1798 and are still very much “alive and kicking”.

Many members of our parish family have a deepconnection to the Old Mission, either through their ownfamily history and roots, or their own experience asvisitors, retreatants, or as volunteers. In recent years, we

have worked hard to create a greater spirit of co-operation and sharing, which will continue. We giveour wholehearted support to the Old Mission during thisdifficult time and are grateful to Father David, his staff and volunteers for their tremendous spirit of dedicationand self-sacrifice.

Retiring Used American and State FlagsDo you have a faded, torn or otherwise unserviceable

Retiring old flags is a technique that all Boy Scouts aretaught as part of their citizenship training. If you have a flagthat needs to be retired, please bring it to the Parish office.Frank Kebelman, our Parish Scout Coordinator, will pick upthe flags and deliver them to local Cub Scout, Boy Scout orVenture units who will insure that the flags are disposed of with dignity and respect. Balancing the BudgetThe Federal government does not operate on a balanced

budget and neither does the State of California. This weekwe have all come to realize the pain that an organization likethe Old Mission can go through in order to bring finances inline and let me say that thanks to you, we have not had toresort to such drastic measures. Thank you for that butallow me to submit something for your consideration.

Our revenues have decreased over the years of therecession (not just plate collection but rentals as well). Nextyear Casa de Amparo will vacate the spaces around theMcKeon Center reducing our rental income significantly(actually they are vacating some space next month). Canyou help us begin to address this shortfall and balance ourbudget? If you are not currently giving to the operation of the parish through a weekly offering can you start with just adollar or two? If you are currently giving 5 dollars can youincrease your gift by two or three dollars each week and if you are a family giving at a higher level can you sacrifice to

add just a few dollars to your weekly gift? We are a verylarge parish and it is through the participation of ALL of ourfamilies that we are successful.

Speaking of families, stewardship of treasure is one of thelasting gifts that we as parents can pass on to our children.Even if it is just a dollar or a few, the fact that you place thatmoney in an envelope and your children see it go into thebasket is an everlasting lesson. If you do not use envelopesor contribute through EFT and would like to start pleasecontact the office. We will be glad to help. Let’s kill twobirds with one stone. We can teach our children a life-lessonand help the parish balance its budget.

For our study we will be using Understanding the Revised Mass Text by Fr. Paul Turner. The cost of the book is $1.50.The class will be in Rm. #1 from 11 AM to 12:30 PM.

WEEKLY BIBLE STUDY:Wednesdays from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM; Thursday morningsfrom 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM and afternoons 1:30 PM to 3:00PM in Rm. #1.

The New MissalFrom Bill Bischoff

In 2001 the congregation for Divine Worship, in Rome,issued a new instruction regarding preparation of

translations of liturgical texts. Looking at the thirty years’experience of the liturgy in the vernacular (the language of the people), new guidelines for liturgical transactions werepresented, including the new English translation of theRoman missal. The use of these guidelines in the newtranslations uses more formal language creating a liturgicallanguage that reflects the dignity of the Sacred Liturgy.

This new liturgical language will be different from thelanguage used in ordinary conversations. It uses words filledwith meaning, drawing on the Scriptures and the Church’srich traditions. Many people will find it awkward to prayrevised texts that conflict with the ones we have memorized

from use. Yet, this very awkwardness will be met with careand intention, with a catechesis that will hopefully lead us toa renewed understanding and appreciation of theEucharistic Liturgy and the role it has in the foundation of the Christian life.

This catechesis for the Roman Missal will involve and touchevery element of parish life. Our priests and we will learn topray the revised texts. We will be more aware of the wordswe address to God, reflecting more deeply on the words wepray. Through prayer, reflection and study we will entermore deeply into our faith. Our choirs and musicians willlearn new settings of the sung parts of the Mass. Ourcatechists and teachers will help our children, youth andadults understand these revised texts. By reflecting on theScriptural images in these prayers we will increase ourfamiliarity with the Word of God and come to recognize therelationship between Scripture and Liturgy.

In the following weeks we will begin to publish our plan forthis parish catechesis leading to the implementation of therevised Roman Missal beginning in Advent 2011. As we lookforward to begin this process, let us remember a veryimportant point of the liturgy.

We celebrate the Eucharistic Liturgy not as individuals, butas one Church gather as the Body of Christ. Our celebrationis diminished if each member of that Body does notparticipate in the Liturgy with heart, mind and soul. In accordwith the liturgical role each of us has in the EucharisticLiturgy, (celebrant, lector, musician, Eucharistic minister,altar server, congregation member, and so on), we mustenter into the Eucharistic Liturgy fully. Interior and Externalpreparation and participation is our goal.

We ask you commit yourselves fully in the preparationprocess of the implementation of the New Missal as we journey toward this advent year.

Beginning Contemplative PrayerOut of Chaos Into Quiet

Contemplative prayer has been an integral part of thespiritual lives of holy men and women throughout churchhistory. In contemplation, God draws the believer intolife-transforming communion with Him.

Sister Kathryn Hermes guides the reader through the stepsof this prayer style, offering a way “out of the chaos, intoquiet.” The author discusses how to prepare one’s self anddelineates the steps: choosing the best place and time of theday; using scriptural phrases and words to focus on; andsitting in quiet to listen to God’s voice. The exercises aredrawn from the writings, teachings, and life examples of spiritual giants and saints. Achieving the highest level of contemplative prayer “becomes a conversation with God"and ultimately union with God.

The author also explains the practices of Centering Prayerand Lectio Divina as forms of contemplative prayer.

Querida Familia Parroquial,

¡Paz y todo bien! El Evangelio de este fin de semana, de Juan(14:1-14), es uno que se lee frecuentemente en las Misas defunerales y por una razón muy buena. Nosotros encontra-mos a Jesús en un momento doloroso particularmente en su

ministerio. El está con sus discípulos compartiendo su cenade Pascua final con sus amigos íntimos, las personas que Elamaba más en la tierra. El sabe que El pronto va a experi-mentar su propio sufrimiento y su muerte y se le está des-trozando su propio corazón. Sin embargo, El está aún capaci-tado para consolarlos y alentarlos, aún cuando El sabe muybien que ellos mismos, por lo menos durante un tiempo, lovan a negar y a abandonar a El.

Jesús le promete a sus discípulos y a nosotros un lugar con Elmismo. El dice “En la casa de mi Padre hay muchas habita-ciones.” (Juan 14:2). Algunas traducciones usan la palabra“mansiones.” Yo prefiero ésta. Imagínense, la gente que ha

luchado tan duro en la vida deberían de recibir no un aparta-mento pequeño o un “bungalow”, sino un palacio increíble.¡Qué signo de la justicia de Dios y de bondad amorosa ysúper abundante! Jesús nos promete también que El…“volveré y los llevaré conmigo, para que donde yo esté,estén también ustedes.” (Juan 14:3). Dios nunca va a aban-donarnos, nosotros tenemos la promesa de Jesús al llegarnuestras vidas a su final, El mismo nos escoltará a nuestrohogar en el paraíso donde nosotros nunca más conoceremosel dolor, la pobreza, la confusión, la duda o el miedo.

Esto no será fácil. Nosotros estamos llamados a tomar enserio la palabra de Jesús y a confiar en El: en fe y “con” fe.

Esto requiere una confianza grande, un gran valor y fortalezay sobre todo, estar de acuerdo a entregarse totalmente alamor de Dios. Nosotros no podemos hacerlo solos, nosotrosnecesitamos la gracia del Espíritu de Jesús. Necesitamostambién el apoyo de unos a otros a través del camino. Estoes lo que nosotros continuamos celebrando y aprendiendoal integrar el mensaje de confianza y de gozo de Pascua deResurrección en nuestras vidas.

Sobre la ParroquiaDesempleados en la Misión Antigua. Como ustedes yasabrán, el jueves pasado, 12 de mayo, once empleados de laMisión Vieja de San Luis Rey perdieron su trabajo. Al igual

que otras instituciones, corporativas o caritativas, la MisiónVieja ha sido afectada severamente con la reducción econó-mica de los años recientes. Los recortes de personal estándirigidos a ayudar a la Misión Vieja a estabilizar su situaciónfinanciera. Los recortes han sido dolorosos para todos losconcernidos. Nosotros les debemos agradecimiento y grati-tud a todos los que han ofrecido su servicio generoso portantos años y nosotros los conservaremos a ellos y a sus fa-miliares en nuestras plegarias…

De acuerdo a Padre David Gaa, OFM, Director Ejecutivo de laMisión Vieja, a pesar de los recortes de personal, las activi-dades diarias no se afectarán. La Iglesia de la Misión históri-ca de la Misión Vieja continuará abierta diariamente a losvisitantes y a los feligreses. La tienda de regalos, el centro deretiros y las actividades del cementerio continuarán funcio-

nando al igual que el “Heritage Ball” y otras celebraciones.Los planes continuarán hacia una campaña de capital y deproyectos futuros tales como preparar y asegurar la iglesiade la Misión Vieja contra terremotos.

Muchos feligreses y otras personas ignoran que la Vieja Mi-sión y la Parroquia son dos entidades institucionales separa-das con organizaciones, programas y finanzas separadascompletamente. La Parroquia no está afectada directamentecon las reducciones de personal de la Misión Vieja. Los Frai-les Franciscanos viven en la Misión y sirven la Vieja Misión yla Parroquia. Nosotros hemos estado aquí desde 1798 y to-davía estamos aquí “vivos y activos.” Muchos de los miem-

bros de nuestra familia parroquial tiene conexiones profun-das con la Misión Vieja, a través de su historia familiar y desus raíces o por su experiencia propia como visitantes, asis-tentes o retiros o como voluntarios. En los años recientes,hemos trabajado duramente para crear un espíritu más fuer-te de co-operación y de compartir que continuará existien-do. Nosotros le damos nuestro apoyo de todo corazón a laMisión Vieja durante este tiempo difícil y le agradecemos aPadre David, a su personal y voluntarios por su ayuda tre-menda y por su sacrificio personal.

El Misal Nuevo

En el año 2001 la Congregación de Adoración Divina, en Ro-ma, presentó instrucciones nuevas sobre la preparación detraducciones de textos litúrgicos. Al observar la experiencia detreinta años de la liturgia en el idioma vernacular (el lenguajedel pueblo), se presentaron guías nuevas para las traduccioneslitúrgicas, incluyendo la traducción nueva de inglés del MisalRomano. El uso de estas guías en la traducción nueva es másliteral y se parece más a la de los textos originales de latín enestilo y en estructura. La traducción usa más el lenguaje formal,creando un lenguaje litúrgico que refleja la dignidad de la Litur-gia Sagrada.

Este lenguaje litúrgico nuevo será diferente del lenguajeutilizado en conversaciones corrientes. El mismo utiliza pala-bras llenas de significados extraídos de las Escrituras y de lasTradiciones ricas de la Iglesia. Muchas personas encontraránembarazoso el rezar con textos revisados que conflicten con losque hemos memorizado por el uso. Sin embargo, esta inconve-niencia la tendremos, con intención y cuidado, con catequesisque esperamos nos guie a un entendimiento renovado y haciauna apreciación de la Liturgia Eucarística y del papel que tieneen la fundación de la vida Cristiana.

Esta catequesis para el Misal Romano envolverá y tocarácada elemento de la vida parroquial. Nuestros sacerdotes ynosotros aprenderemos a rezar en los textos revisados. Estare-mos más consientes de las palabras que nosotros usamos paradirigimos a Dios, reflexionando más profundamente las pala-bras que nosotros rezamos. A través de la plegaria, de la re-flexión y del estudio nosotros entraremos más profundamentedentro de nuestra fe. Nuestros coros y músicos aprenderánarreglos nuevos de las partes cantadas de la Misa. Nuestroscatequistas y maestros ayudarán a los niños, a los jóvenes y alos adultos a comprender estos textos revisados. Al reflexionarsobre las imágenes de las Escrituras en estas oraciones, noso-

tros aumentaremos nuestra familiaridad con la Palabra de Diosy llegaremos a reconocer la relación entre la Escritura y la Litur-gia.

En las semanas próximas nosotros comenzaremos a publicarnuestro plan para la catequesis de esta parroquia, guiadoshacia la implementación del Misal Romano revisado, comen-zando en Adviento 2011. Al mirar hacia adelante para iniciareste proceso, vamos a recordar un punto muy importante denuestra liturgia.

Nosotros celebramos la Liturgia Eucarística, no como indivi-duos, sino más bien como una Iglesia, reunidos como el Cuerpode Cristo. Nuestra celebración se disminuye si cada miembrodel Cuerpo no participa en la Liturgia con el corazón, con la

mente y con el alma. Con relación al papel que cada uno denosotros tiene en la Liturgia Eucarística (el que preside, el lec-tor, el músico, el ministro Eucarístico, el acólito y el miembrode la congregación y demás) todos debemos entrar totalmenteen la Liturgia Eucarística. La preparación interior y exterior y laparticipación es nuestra meta.

Nosotros les pedimos que se comprometan totalmente alproceso de preparación de la implementación del Misal Nuevomientras caminamos en nuestra jornada hacia el adviento deeste año.

Equilibrando el PresupuestoEl gobierno Federal no opera con un presupuesto balancea-

do y tampoco el Estado de California. Esta semana todos noshemos dado cuenta del dolor que una organización como laMisión Antigua puede pasar para traer las finanzas en línea ydéjenme decirles que gracias a ustedes, nosotros no hemostenido que recurrir a medidas tan drásticas. Gracias por eso ypermítanme presentarles algo para su consideración.

Nuestros ingresos han disminuído durante los años de rece-sión (no solo la colecta en efectivo pero también en otras áre-as.) El próximo año, Casa de Amparo dejará vacante los espa-cios alrededor del Centro McKeon reduciendo nuestro ingresosignificativamente (en realidad ellos comenzarán a desalojaralgunos espacios el mes próximo.) ¿Pueden ustedes ayudarnosa dirigir este déficit y equilibrar nuestro presupuesto? Si tu noestas contribuyendo actualmente a la operación de la parro-quia por medio de tu ofrenda semanal ¿podrías comenzar consolo un dólar o dos? Si actualmente estas donando cinco dóla-res, podrías incrementar tu regalo por dos o tres dólares máscada semana y si tu eres una familia que está dando en un nivelmás alto ¿podrías hacer el sacrificio y agregar un poco más en

tu regalo semanal? Nosotros somos una parroquia grande y espor medio de la participación de TODAS las familias que noso-tros podemos tener exito.

Hablando de familias, la corresponsabilidad es uno de lostesoros perdurables que nosotros como padres podemos dejar-les a nuestros hijos. Aunque sea un dólar o más, el hecho deque coloques el dinero en el sobre y tus hijos vean que lo colo-cas en la canasta de la colecta en una lección de por vida. Si tuno usas los sobres o contribuyes por medio del TrasladoElectrónico de Fondos y te gustaría comenzar por favor, co-munícate con la oficina parroquial, con gusto te ayudaremos.Nosotros podemos enseñarles a nuestros hijos una lección de-por-vida y a la vez ayudar a la parroquia a equilibrar el presu-puesto.
