Environmental Considerations

For proper cooling, the computer requires a minimum free air spaceof 7.6 cm. (3 in.) behind, 5.1 cm. (2 in.) above and below, and 2.5cm. (1 in.) on the sides of the chassis. The computer is equipped withfans to help ensure proper cooling.

Strong magnetic fields near the front of the computer outside theenclosure could potentially distort the image over time. This type ofimage distortion generally disappears after degaussing occurs. Thecomputer is designed to automatically degauss each time you cycleAC power, or when you press the degauss button.

Note: The internal degauss will not prevent color impurities causedby local magnetic fields. Make certain the Industrial Computer’senclosure is free of residual magnetism.

Panel Mounting, Bulletin 6153

The panel on which the Industrial Computer is to be mounted shouldbe at least 14 gauge steel to insure a NEMA 4 seal and propersupport for the unit. The mounting hardware provided willaccommodate this minimum thickness panel and panels up to 6.35mm (.25 in.) thick.

To install the Bulletin 6153 Industrial Computer:

1. Confirm that the shipping carton contains a package of 16 10-32bolts with their washers and lock nuts. You will need 14 sets(4-slot) or 16 sets (8/12-slot) for installation.

2. Refer to the physical dimension drawing for your unit andconfirm that there is adequate space behind the panel where theunit is to be situated. Remember to allow extra space for aircirculation.

• Bulletin 6153 with 8/12 slots, Figure 2 on Page 5.

3. Refer to the panel cutout drawing for your unit for dimensions ofthe panel cutout and location of mounting holes. Cut and drill thepanel.

• Bulletin 6153 with 4 slots, Figure 5 on Page 10.

• Bulletin 6153 with 8/12 slots, Figure 6 on Page 11.

Tip: it will be easier to install the computer if you support it witha shelf or other support adjusted to the appropriate height.

4. Carefully remove the computer from its packaging. Avoiddamaging the panel gasket.

5. Remove the external bezel.

6. Insert the computer in the panel cutout from the front of thepanel.

7. Place the washers (one of each) on the bolts provided and installthrough the front panel.

8. Secure with the included lock nuts, tightening them evenly to 25inch pounds torque.

!ATTENTION: Mounting nuts must be tightened to atorque of 25 inch-pounds to provide panel seal andavoid potential damage to the Bulletin 6153 IndustrialComputer. Allen–Bradley assumes no responsibility forwater or chemical damage to the Bulletin 6153Industrial Computer or other equipment within theenclosure due to improper installation.

Important: To assure a proper seal, be sure to install all 14 (4slots) or 16 (8/12 slots) bolts.

9. Remove the protective adhesive sheet from the screen of theIndustrial Computer. The sheet is designed to prevent scratchingof the polycarbonate screen protector or the optional touchscreenduring shipping and installation. It should be removed before use.

10. Attach the external bezel to the front of the Industrial Computer.

Rack Mounting, Bulletin 6154

The 6154 Industrial Computer can be installed in a rack cabinet thatconforms to EIA standards for equipment with 19” wide panels. Thecabinet must be tall enough to accommodate the computer’s heightand deep enough to accommodate the unit’s depth, while providingrear clearance for cabling and air flow. A cabinet with a depth of 61cm. (24 in.) is sufficient.

Note: The computer is not designed to be supported by the cabinet’sfront panel. Use either rack mount slides or a shelf to support theweight of the unit.

To install a Bulletin 6154 computer in your rack:

1. Refer to the physical dimension drawings for your unit to confirmthat there is adequate space behind the panel where the unit is tobe mounted. Remember to allow extra space for air circulation.

• Bulletin 6154 with 4 slots, Figure 3 on Page 6.• Bulletin 6154 with 8/12 slots, Figure 4 on Page 7.

2. Carefully remove the Industrial Computer from its packaging.

3. Attach the rack slides to the unit, and align to the mating slideinside the cabinet.

4. Insert the computer in the rack cabinet from the front of thecabinet. The pair(s) of holes in the lower part of the front panelshould align with the holes in the front rack rails.

Tip: It will be easier to install the computer if you support it witha shelf or other support adjusted to the appropriate height.

5. Remove the protective adhesive sheet from the screen of theIndustrial Computer. The sheet is designed to prevent scratchingof the screen or the optional touchscreen during shipping andinstallation. It should be removed before use.



Connecting AC Power

The computer requires a single phase power supply providing90-132V AC or 180-264V AC at 47 to 63 Hz. Power must beavailable at the three-pin AC input receptacle situated in the rear ofthe unit.

To connect AC power to the computer.

1. Turn off the mains switch or breaker.

2. Use the GND point on the rear panel of the monitor to establish achassis to earth ground connection. Secure one end of a groundstrap to the GND point. Connect the other end of the ground strapto an earth ground. The ground terminals are M5 screws.

3. Connect the socket end of the AC power cord to the matingconnector on the rear panel of the computer.

4. Check the male to female power extension cable to insure that itis properly seated. This cable runs from the switched outlet on therear of the computer to an AC power connector on the monitorportion of the computer.

5. Connect the plug end of the AC power cord to the mains outlet.

6. Restore AC power to the mains outlet.



The following is a summary of the controls and indicators on theBulletin 6153 and 6154 Industrial Computer. Refer to figures 7through 10 for help in locating specific controls or indicators.

Power Indicator

The presence of AC power at the Bulletin 6153 or 6154 IndustrialComputer is indicated by a green LED in the front panel.



Contrast and Brightness Controls

The Bulletin 6153 and 6154 Industrial Computers are equipped withadjustable contrast and brightness controls. The 4-slot units haveduplicate controls on the front and the back of the unit. The 8/12-slotunits have a contrast control on the front, and both contrast andbrightness controls on the back.

To obtain the best display:

• set the contrast control for comfortable viewing under lightingconditions that match those in which the Industrial Computer willbe used.

• adjust the brightness control to increase or decrease the videoimage’s intensity as required.

Raster Rotation

A raster rotation control is located on the back of the unit. It allowsyou to correct display misalignment which might result frominteraction between the monitor and an external, low level uniformmagnetic field, such as the earth’s magnetic field.

All CRT displays are affected by the earth’s magnetic field and bysimilar low level uniform fields. Generally, the effects of such a fieldon the display vary with the display’s spatial orientation relative tothe field lines. For, example, when the Industrial Computer’s screenis facing West, the effects of the earth’s field are minimal, but whenthe screen is rotated toward the North or South the display itself canexhibit a small amount of rotation, so that its top and bottom edgesare no longer parallel to the edges of the panel.

Note: This effect is different from the effect of magnetism on theshadow mask, which takes the form of color impurity and iscorrected by the degaussing system described previously.

Before making any adjustment, display a full screen image and checkfor rotation (top or bottom edge of the image out of parallel with thecorresponding edge of the panel).

If adjustment is necessary, turn the control knob while observing thedisplay (in a mirror if necessary) to adjust the image alignment.

Important : The raster rotation control cannot correct for the effectsof external AC fields such as those produced by large motors,generators and transformers. Such effects often take the form ofdisplay jitter. Protection against this kind of magnetic interferencerequires special shielding.

Image Size and Position

Controls for Vertical Size, Vertical Position, Horizontal Size, andHorizontal Position are located on the back of the unit. Use thiscontrols as necessary to adjust the image.



Degauss

The monitor is equipped with an automatic degaussing system toremove residual magnetism from the CRT’s shadow mask atpower-up. Degaussing helps keep the screen free of any colorimpurities which might otherwise result from magnetism picked upby the shadow mask from the earth’s magnetic field when themonitor is moved.

In addition, two manual degauss push button are provided. The firstis among the operator controls accessible from the front of theIndustrial Computer, and the second is on the back of the unit. Thesecan be used if color impurities appear on the screen while theIndustrial Computer is in use.

Tip: For best results, perform a manual degauss only after allowingat least 15 minutes to pass following power-up or a previous manualdegauss.

!ATTENTION: Do not attempt to change any of thefactory adjustments located on the rear of the IndustrialComputer chassis. These adjustments are for factorytrained personnel using special test and alignmentequipment and should not be required to obtain a gooddisplay in the field.

You will need to connect a number of cables at the rear of the unitbefore your Industrial Computer will function. This section describesthe cable connections you will need to make. While installing cables,be sure to keep the following points in mind.

• Connect the cables according to the options in your IndustrialComputer.

• Route and secure the cables. In cases where the cable crosses adoor hinge, be sure to leave enough excess cable for a loose fit inall door positions.

• Coil and secure any extra cable length in a convenient location.

Refer to the figures 11 and 12 for help in routing and connecting thecables required to use your Industrial Computer.

To establish connections between the monitor and the computer:

1. Connect the standard 15-pin connector end of the video cable tothe computer’s video cable’s VGA connector.

2. Tighten the captive screws on the cable connector to secure it.

3. Connect the VGA cable to the connector on the monitor section.




Touchscreen, mouse and other input device setup

To set up the front panel keyboard

To enable the front panel keyboard connector, use a 5-pin DINkeyboard cable (4- or 12-slot units) or a PS2 keyboard cable (8-slotunits) at the rear of the unit. Connect the male cable end to thecomputer’s Keyboard connector.

An IBM AT keyboard may be connected to either the front panel5-pin DIN connector or to the rear panel Keyboard connector. Onlyone auxiliary keyboard input port can be used at any time.

Note: A Lemo style sealed keyboard connector is required to use thefront panel keyboard connector on 4-slot units.

If your computer has a touchscreen:

The Touchscreen option provides a high resolution resistive orcapacitive touchscreen system. Driver software, provided with theIndustrial Computer when configured with the touchscreen option,allows the touchscreen to function with many popular DOS- andWindows-based industrial applications as a pointing device (mouse).Refer to the appropriate documentation packet, included with thetouchscreen option, for additional details on the installation andoperation of the touchscreen.

1. Connect one end of the touchscreen serial cable to the AUX2connector on the monitor section. Connect the other end to theCOM1 port on the computer section as shown in figures 11 and12.


For units configured with the touchscreen option, the touchscreenserial cable (RS-232) is provided with a 9-pin D-shell connector.

To open the computer chassis

You may have to open the computer chassis to install a card or forsome other reason.

1. Disconnect and remove cables from the computer chassis.

2. Remove the two or three Phillips-head screws at the rear of theunit.

3. Slide the chassis straight back and out, taking care to support thechassis as it slides free.

4. Some versions have a ground wire that must be detached from aPhillips-head screw before the chassis can be completelyremoved.

Preparation for Shipment

If it is necessary to ship the computer from one site to another, itshould be removed from the panel or cabinet in which it has beeninstalled. Whenever possible, the computer should be repacked in itsoriginal shipping carton.

!ATTENTION: Never try to ship the IndustrialComputer while it is mounted in a panel. Doing socould result in damage to the panel or the IndustrialComputer.

To remove the computer from the panel, reverse the installationprocedures given previously in this manual.

Note: Be careful to remove the Ground wire before removing thecomputer from the panel or rack.

Maintenance



Cleaning

To inspect the filter

Filters should be removed and cleaned or replaced as necessary tomaintain proper cooling. Inspect the filter at least yearly, and moreoften in environments with large concentrations of airborneparticulate matter.

To clean the monitor display

To clean the computer screen protector or touchscreen, use a 50%solution of alcohol (ethanol or isopropyl) in water on a cotton gauzepad or soft cotton cloth. Paper products may scratch the surface, andshould be avoided.

Note: The solvent should be applied only to the cloth, and notdirectly to the surface to be cleaned.
