CHIEF Minister Lim Guan Eng has ex-pressed disappointment with Perkasa

which held a loud unruly protest with agroup of youngsters at his house on 10thMay, 2012. What would happen if asimilar incident occurred at Sri Perdana, the Prime Ministers residence? No ac-

tion was taken by the authorities to pre-vent or stop the group from throwingitems like posters into his compound andhanging a photo of Lim with a wreath todenote a funeral.

At a press conference at Komtar thesame afternoon, Lim commented: Theycan hold their protest here at Komtar as

they have done so many times. How-ever, why go to my house, which threat-ens the safety of my family and espe-cially my youngest son who is only fve

    years old?

After the protest at Lims house, thegroup took a convoy of bikers to Komtar, littering several roads with the postersstrewn along the way. MPPP workers hadto pick up the trail of litter left by theprotestors in the sweltering sun to keep

the island clean. Two huge black bagswere flled with the litter.

Lims wife, Betty Chew Gek Cheng,

also expressed shock over the invasionof privacy at her home. She wrote on herFacebook: Could this incident be al-lowed to happen so smoothly at SriPerdana or any house of BN MB/CM? I

am really surprised and regret the policeinaction towards them and even allowedthese people to hang Guan Engs photoat the main gate without any attempt tostop them. Why is there different treat-

    ments against BERSIH participants and

KOTOR people? Sad indeed if thwhat Malaysia is becoming... KOTO

treated better than BERSIH...At the protest in Komtar, Per

hollered over the loudhailer: Kbukan Bersih, kami benci Bersihare not Bersih, we hate Bersih)

reference to the Bersih 3.0 peacgathering in Malaysia and varcountries. The gathering in Penwas also peaceful with no untowincidences.

gimmick to get political gain, he toldnewsmen in response to Penang FootballAssociations president Mohd Foaz Ha-mid request to Penang Pakatan Rakyat

State Government to use the Penang CityStadium in Jalan Datuk Keramat for its

in Penang was a much talk-about thing

not only in every household and warongshere, but also througout the country,Mohd Foaz said.

We had a strong State football teamthen and it was admired and respected byeveryone, he added.

All that glory is gone now, so is ourfamous Keramat Roar he told newsmen

during the courtesy visit.Mohd Foaz Hamid said the State Gov-

the association to get the State team back

on track. He likened the condition of Penang

State Football to the famous Malay say-ing Harimau Kumbang Patah Taring or

    (A leopard with broken fangs).

He went on to say that there is a bigpool of football talent among theyouths in Penang, but what is

lacking is the guidance and -nancial support from the foot-

glory in football with the co-operation of all sectors, namelythe State Government andother non-Government organi-

sations, he said.He added that the PenangCity Stadium is very quiet now.

Gone are the days when weused to see a hive of activitiesat the stadium compound, oldMalay ladies selling all kinds

of clothes and other goods,Mohd Foaz said.

We also wish to see thevarious local football fan clubsbeing revived.

Meanwhile, in a recent de-velopment, some 26 clubs un-

der the Football Association of Pen(FAP) received a total of RM31,50develop the sport.

    The Penang state government

    Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng

sented the RM1,500 and RM1cheques to representatives from 11 Dsion One, eight Division Two and s

    Division Three clubs in Komtar.

To show our support for the new

leadership, we will allow the FAP to

the City Stadium without the associhaving to settle the rental fee arrowed to the Penang Municipal Cou(MPPP), CM Lim said.

    However, the amount owe

RM409,290 will still be noted inMPPPs nancial record, he added

CM Lim said the FAP would only to pay for future use of the stadiuLorong Kulit.

He said the State Government wato see an effective and professional to bring Penang football back to its gdays.

    The FAPs nancial administra

must be transparent and clean to rethe condence of sponsors, donors

For MPPP worker Ismail Bin Latif and his co-worker, it mustbe their sense of pride like godfathers to a newborn kid thatthey take the job as caretakers to the newly built market pubwashrooms very conscientiously. Thanks to them, the publicwashrooms, remarked by some as of hotel standard duringthe launch in November last year by CM Lim Guan Eng are stspotlessly clean to this day! Assemblymember of Air Itam, WoHon Wai made a visit to Air Itam market and was very pleasedwith the cleanliness.

THE Penang Adventist Oncology Centre Ground-breaking Ceremony held on 26 April, 2012 was anhistoric event. Professor Soo Khee Chee, DeputyGroup Chief Executive Officer of SingHealth Ser-

vices & Director of National Cancer Centre Singa-pore (NCCS) named four value propositions whythe NCCS chose Penang Adventist Hospital to col-laborate with.

Professor Soo also introduced several doctors

from Penang who are now working in Singapore andwilling to return to the island to work. Professor Soogave several reasons why Penang was chosen. There are tremendous resources, space and com-mitment shown by the Penang Adventist Hospital,

    Professor Soo said.

Clearly Penang is very attractive to Singapore-ans due to the connectivity, same roots, almostsimilar culture and many things that Penang has likethe hill, sea, friendly people and good food. Most

of all, we share the same philosphy he added.Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was at the ground-

breaking of the three-storey Adventist OncologyCentre (AOC) costing RM15million.The Centre is expected to be com-

pleted in two years. With cancer cases on alarming

increase, we certainly need a cancercentre that is not only able to en-hance patients quality of life throughexcellent care, but also provide edu-

cation in a fully integrated, multi-disciplinary and cost-effective on-

cology care delivery system, CMLim said in his speech.

The AOC with the NCCS and with

the support of a dedicated medicalteam, nursing and health-care pro-fessionals that champion a Multi-disciplinary Team Approach orMDT, are hopefully taking a step

closer towards finding cures forvarious cancers.

In a press conference, CM Lim told members ofthe media that Penang is trying to find synergy withprivate hospitals. Apart from these leverages and

linkages, we are hoping that these will attract moreexperts to come to Penang. We cant compete withSingapore but we hope with the collaboration, Sin-

gapore can think of Penang as an option.CM Lim also proudly mentioned that Penang has

the best Government in Malaysia and severalprodigal sons have chosen to return to Penang dueto the conducive environment for researchers, in-novators and technopreneurs to flourish in Penang.

He pointed out, Six of the best oncologists in

the region will be coming to the AOC and this isindeed remarkable for Penang. Sometimes there arethings that money cannot buy and these brainpower is one of them.

In 2009, out of Malaysias total medical tourism

receipts of RM288 million, Penang contributedRM164 million or 57%. In 2010, this increased

to RM 218 million or 66% of thetotal RM336 million nationalmedical tourism receipts. In2011, it is expected that medicaltour i sm in Penang wi l l h i t

RM250 mil which is two thirdof Malaysias total revenue inthe sector. In 2010 the HotelResort Insider, named Malaysia

as one of the top five medicaltourism des t inat ions in theworld. Penang clearly stands outas a premier Medical City wherepatients from within ASEANand further afield will be able to

come to seek a holistic andcost-effective healthcare.

    Story byChan Lilian

    CITIZEN journalism can be briefly

explained as citizens taking up thetask of reporting. Malaysiakini withthe support of International Centre forJournalists (ICFJ) is the pioneer incitizen journalism in Malaysia . To-

date the citizen journalists (CJs)trained by Malaysiakini-ICFJ havecollectively published 1,900 videosand 2,000 articles.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had

given his thumbs up for the CJs. Hesaid, As you all are aware, the situa-tion of news gathering in Malaysia isnot all rosy. The ever-increasing scep-ticism and distrust among readers of

the mainstream media have created a

demand for impartial and objectivenews and have given birth to a new

form of journalism known as citizenjournalism.

A testament of CM Lims support

was his presence at two events at the3rd Citizen Journalist Conference inPenang on 18-20th May, 2012. JimmyLeow a CJ from Penang remarked,

We are so honoured and yet so sur-prised that CM Lim has graced both :the opening of the conference and alsoattended the Gala Dinner. Really, re-ally surprised since we know how busy

CM Lim is.Since 2009, CJs in Penang have

played an important part in the com-munity. Former CJ Chan Lilian who isnow working in the CMs Office to-

gether with Jimmy Leow and otherPenang CJs had uncovered many is-

sues that most mainstream media donot cover. Some of them are : the issueof hill-slope hous-

issues and others tor i es tha t t hemain-stream media

    journalists would normally shy awayfrom.

This new breed of journalists isbeginning to shape the way news isbeing reported and is challenging theculture of silence that surrounds sensi-

tive issues. It definitely has paved theway for a journalistic revolution inMalaysia.

One hundred and twenty CJs fEast and West Malaysia, out of a

of four hundred CJs, convergeHeritage Penang for a Wild, Wild Wthemed dinner and Gala Dinner. Talso took time to hold a freeze m

Rakyat government didnot fulfil its election man-ifesto. One of the grousesthey raised was with park-ing charges imposed by

MPPP till late at night. Butthese charges at certainareas are meant to curb themenace of jaga-kereta(parking extortionists)

    chief ministerschildren may be

at home? Limdescribed Perkasa as uncivilised people which isagreed by many.

This is not the first incident where the CMschildren have been threatened by the dirty game of

politics. In October last year, pro-Umno bloggersand party leaders had spread false rumours abouthis 15-year old son. Lim singled out Umno youthchief Khairy Jamaluddin and others for perpetratingthe lies and making snide comments on blogs andon social media.

On 26 February, 2012, at the Himpunan HijauAnti-Lynas peaceful protest, Umno and Perkasaprotestors had aggressively disrupted the gathering.

The violent actions of the group, injuring severalreporters, are still fresh on peoples mind. One man

who joined the protest at Lims house was capturedin photographs threatening him several times at theHimpunan Hijau event. He shouted vulgarities, threatening to throw his shoe, and also raised hishand in a threatening manner.

Lim lodged a police report on 28 February, 2012,citing: For my personal safety, I hereby lodge apolice report against violent threats by Umno andPerkasa members. Should anything happen to me,Umno and Perkasa have to bear full responsibility.

It is up to the police to show that they can performtheir duties without fear or favour by acting not only

also those who threatened me.To show dissent is welcome in any democracy.

The manner in which the organisers of the Bersih

and Himpunan Hijau rallies planned and execthe gatherings demonstrates the maturity and priety in holding of public expression. However

event outside the Chief Ministers home, cominthe wake of other similar aggressive protests, raised concern about a new puerile and uncculture of demonstration by a select few that iing tolerated by the authorities despite their intdating and threatening actions.

Most children look up to Datuk Nicol David as their role model

    - The dilemma of a mother -

A couple of years ago, I at-

tended a parenting seminarand the facilitator MartinJalleh asked what were someof the challenges we faced asparents. I told Martin that the

lack of good role models wasthe challenge I found hard tohandle.

    I am a mother to four sons,aged 22, 20, 16 and 9. Having

brought up two adult sons, I

can safely say that my hus-band and I had done wellbecause they are young menI can be proud of - caring,

    responsible, diligent, inde-pendent, hardworking andhonest.

Though they are nowadults, after passing the 18-

year old benchmark, I amafraid that my responsibilityas a mother does not endthere. It is a long journeyahead and as parents, I want

to be sure that my children have exemplary role modelsto emulate.

I used to teach catechism in church to a group of

13-year old children. One of the lessons was about rolemodels. They were asked to make a list of people who

were their role models. Nicol David and Lee Chong Weiwere on every groups list. Others included names oftheir parents, teachers, friends, priests and sports per-sonalities. However, a state leaders name made it tothe list of the children - Lim Guan Eng, the ChiefMinister of Penang.

Back to the lack of role models dilemma, Martinagreed with me that it is very tough to bring up childrennowadays becausethey are so ex-posed to elements

which we feel arenot part of ourmoral values.

    With the main-s t r e a m m e d i a

splashing almostpornographic ma-terials on front-pages, how do weparents point out

whats wrong andwhats right tothem? We havegrown up to ac-cept whats print-

have even taken news as gospel truths.A few days ago, my little boy aged 9 proudly told me

he read the mainstream media he bought from school.

One of the English daily brings its newspapers to hisschool and sells them for RM1 instead of RM1.20. Asa mother, I am very proud that a 9-year old takes aninterest in improving his English.

However, I was disturbed when I heard him utteringnames of politicians. I thought he was doing some

school environmental project but oh no..... he was read-ing the political news. I certainly do not want my littleboys mind to be clouded with politics. Not that I amsaying politics are dirty and bad but the political news

    nowadays arent

something I wantmy boy to explore atthis age when he isinnocent.

    The reason is be-

cause I myself do notknow what is rightand what is wronganymore. How canour society stoop to

the level of grown-up, old men showingtheir butts to a lady? How can we justifysomeone selling

burgers in a residen-tial area, in front of

my boy that it is not okay for a tit-for-tat act of giout free food in front of a policemans house?

As parents, if we do not watch closely and atte

to explain moral values and what is the norm, our dren may grow up adopting all these as a way ofCorruption, betrayal, lies, slander, false accusatsexual exploitations and confrontations are not w

want my children to take as a daily dose of informa

I think it is better for my child to read only the cics section from now on. Though I want to encouhim to read more, I think the newspapers are certnot a good place to start. Sad, isnt it? There is mbad infuence than good surrounding us everyday

However, on the positive side, each of us can do

    Of innocent childrenand newspapers
