1 ABACK ON TRA FOR 2010b BACK ON TRACK FOR 2010! It is on again for 2010! Fifteen of our students are riding push bikes from Mt Kaputar back to Bulahdelah, a total of 450 kilometres, through every type of terrain and weather you can imagine. They will be riding through places in NSW like Hanging Rock and over the Barrington Tops, camping along the way. The students, ranging from Year 7 to Year 11, are riding to raise money for Stewart House and Father Chris Riley's 'Youth Off The Streets'. Last year 12 riders completed the challenge from Tamworth back to Bulahdelah (see photo) and they raised over $3000. What an amazing accomplish- ment! We hope to top that this year. The students will begin their journey in Term 3 and conclude in the school holidays - Saturday 18 th to Monday 27 th September. To complete the challenge we are taking three teachers, the school bus and trailer, a truck, two support vehicles, parents to assist and a lot of food and water. We are hoping for some businesses to assist with donations - whether it be with fuel, food, water or a donation of money. We are very grateful to Camp Cobark (via Gloucester) and Glenrock Station for allowing our students to camp for the night and use their facilities. The students will be very busy assisting with fundraising over the next few months. We are hoping to stage a few events such as a golf day (see page 9), a bowls day and a Father's Day raffle to name a few. Last Friday week I had the pleasure of representing Bulahdelah Central School at a function at

Stewart House, which is located opposite South Curl Curl beach in Sydney.

At the function BCS was presented with the Central Schools’ Shield for raising the most money out of all the Central Schools in NSW. A fantastic effort by our students and especially those involved in the Bike Challenge last year which contributed a significant amount of the total amount raised for

Steward House by Bulahdelah Central School in 2009.

This is the first time Bulahdelah Central School’s name has appeared on the shield and I hope it won’t be the last. As the biggest Central School in NSW we have a distinct advantage and it is a bit embarrassing when schools with less than 80 students are able to raise more funds than us.

Every year we send students to Steward House and while there they attend a specific purpose school onsite for eight days of their 12-day stay. During their stay, these students are provided with optometric, dental and medical treatment as well as emotional support. This is balanced with health and educational programs and out of school activities to boost their self-esteem and to promote a healthier lifestyle.

Traditionally, teachers and staff from the NSW public education system have donated through fortnightly salary contributions around $900,000 of the $2.5million needed to run Stewart House. Public school children through school-based fundraising contribute around $500,000. The remainder is gathered from personal and corporate donations and applications for private grants and subsidies. So you can see it is important that we continue to support such a worthy organisation to ensure they can continue to provide the important services to lots public school children across the state.

In recent weeks a small white envelope was sent home with each child asking for a gold coin donation for Stewart House. Thank you to those students and parents who have already returned one. If you still have yours and would like to contribute please get it the office in the next couple of weeks. Your support for not only our local children but for other children across the state is appreciated. -Don Hudson, Principal.

Following a successful and sunny athletics carnival on the 10th May a number of our students will be representing the school at Zone later this week. Bradman again dominated, taking out the Champion House. In addition a number of students who performed in Drama and Music at the Taree Eisteddfod last week were presented with their awards on the assembly. Congratulations to all students who participated in this annual event. Last week Year 11 completed their half yearly exams and will shortly receive their reports which will be able to be discussed at our Parent/teacher Evening in the second week back next term. A recent monitoring of students’ performance over all subjects, Years 7 to 12, was completed

last week and students will receive a letter home if they received merits or if there were concerns about their progress. Please contact the school if you have any queries regarding these letters. Finally, I again spoke to students about school uniform at the assembly last Monday. A major concern is the number of students turning up in non-school jumpers and also students who are wearing coloured shorts or board shorts, particularly on Fridays. I have informed students that if they persist in not wearing school uniform they will be required to see me. They may be asked to wear clean clothing from the school clothing pool or to miss out on participation in school activities. Could you please assist in ensuring students wear appropriate uniform. Please contact

the school if there are financial difficulties obtaining uniform.

- Roger Horton, Secondary Deputy Principal

Many school activities have been held, in the last two weeks, during my absence whilst on leave. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the students who have participated in these activities. It is always exciting when students choose to participate in extra-curricular activities, as it demonstrates a desire to strive for excellence with determination and perseverance. These are some of the qualities that we encourage in our students. Well done to the boy’s soccer team for their efforts, and although behind on the scoreboard, they

showed great determination and perseverance, giving their all until the final whistle!!! Great stuff!! Our tennis team also did the school proud, once again this year, reaching the fourth round of the PSSA knockout tournament. This is a significant achievement and one that the students, school and community should be proud of. I have been very impressed with the attitude of the players and how they combine as a team to achieve personal excellence. Well done!! A number of our students certainly left their mark on the Taree Eisteddfod recently. All participants

must be congratulated on their efforts which embody the values of respect, innovation, determination and excellence. The standout performances were BCS students winning both sections of the Public Speaking and the efforts and achievements of our debating team, which received numerous accolades from the adjudicator. Our dance/drama girls once again blew away their competitors and won their section. What fantastic results!!! Well done to all other competitors who also displayed determination in pursuit of personal excellence!! (A full Eisteddfod report will be in the next Newsletter.) I would like to thank the staff and parents who supported these activities, as participation in such events would not be possible without their facilitation and input!! Look what we can achieve when students, parents and staff work in partnership…..there are no limits!!!! Some dates for your diary: 28th May Regional X Country; 2nd June CWA International Day.

U15 GIRLS SOCCER

On a recent Wednesday, students from Saint Clares,Taree travelled to Bulahdelah to challenge our girls for the Round 2 Bill Turner Soccer Competition. Saint Clares proved to be a formidable competitor taking our girls to overtime and unfortunately winning by a lucky golden point goal in the last four minutes of extra time. Although our girls had a steady lead right though the first half, Saint Clares made our keeper Lily Sibert work in goals to maintain our lead. At half time the score remained 1-0 with the first goal being scored by our striker Katrina Mason. The second

half of the game saw our girls loose our lead and give in to a 1-1 draw at full time. The girls bound together tightly to support each other with Casey Gooch working profoundly well with a debutante rookie and little sister Ellie Gooch. The Gooch girls made a formidable team making numerous runs

down the wing to bring the ball right to the goal mouth but unfortunately unable to find the back of the net. A great game was had by all. Although we will not be progressing through to the next round of Bill Turner the girls are looking forward to playing in our next friendly against Dungog at Dungog on June 23. - Cathryn Guthrie, Organising Teacher.

BOYS PSSA SOCCER

On Monday 10th May, the primary boy’s soccer team travelled to Nabiac to play in the PSSA knockout competition. The game started quickly and our boys seemed to be still in shock or half asleep, not sure, but Nabiac scored a very quick 4 goals in the first part of the first half. Our boys fought back hard and stopped any more goals from being scored. Well done Kayden. We had a few

break aways towards our goals but unfortunately could not get a good shot away, due to Nabiac's strong defence line. During the second half, Bulahdelah were in excellent form and dominated the ball possession and play. We scored an awesome goal, making the score 4-1. Our goal was scored by our youngest player Joshua Dallas, with excellent support from Bailey Shultz. We played hard

until the finish but still struggled to get the ball in between the posts. The final score was 5-1 and the boys did Bulahdelah proud. Thanks boys. Now to see how our girls go against Tea Gardens. Stay posted.

NUTRITION NOTES: Conquer the unhealthy lunchbox: Healthy eating involves eating a

balanced diet full of nutrient dense foods to provide calcium, iron, fibre, vitamins and minerals. A variety of food from the 5 food groups is vital because this is the only way to receive the amount of

nutrients which are necessary for children to grow into healthy adolescents and adults. As parents, you may find it difficult to encourage children to eat healthily, as children often want what their friends are eating or they may be a fussy eater. It is important to support your child by giving them confidence in knowing why healthy eating is good for them. It may also help to provide healthy but delicious lunch box. Options are:

Recess – date coconut balls. These often give a hint of chocolate

however are made from: ½ cup of dates, ½ cup apricot, ½ cup raisins, 2 tablespoons cocoa, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, ¼ desiccated coconut. You will need to blend dates, apricot, raisins and cocoa in a

food processor for 1 min. If the mixture doesn’t hold together add some orange juice. Mix the coconut and cinnamon in a cup and mix well. Spread the coconut on kitchen paper. Roll the processed food into balls and toss each ball in coconut. Place in fridge to chill and firm. Other delicious healthy recess snacks include air pop corn, diet jelly with fruit pieces, vegetable snacks with hummus dips.

Lunch - Mini pizzas can be a great wholesome idea for both winter and summer. Using an English

muffin as the pizza base put a teaspoon of pureed tomatoes on the base and fill with favourite toppings, for example; sliced tomato, capsicum, pine apple, reduced fat cheese, spinach and corn. This offers a wide range of fruit and vegetables on a whole meal option, which is great for fibre, B vitamins, iron, vitamin C and calcium. Other lunch ideas, salad wraps, and vegetable quiche. Beverages-it is important for children to have water freely available throughout the day; avoid the temptation to put in flavoured cordial or too much fruit juice. Sometimes children like a dash of lime or lemon juice in their water. Flavoured or plain milk is also popular and if it is frozen ahead of time you can place it next to perishable foods and keep them safe.

Why is our Attendance Policy necessary? To reach their potential at school, students need to

attend regularly. Studies show there is a far greater chance of students becoming early school leavers if they don't attend school regularly. We must account for the whereabouts of our students daily. We strive to work with parents to provide a secure and caring learning environment for our students. Many of our “approved” absences are for trivial reasons eg. shopping. We need to work together to help students to understand the importance of being at school whenever possible. If a student is absent for more than five days per semester he/she will put at risk the successful completion of the unit of study. IT’S NOT GOOD ENOUGH!! It not only affects the student involved in terms of sequential learning, but often interrupts the progress of the whole class. DOES OUR COMMUNITY PLACE A HIGH VALUE ON EDUCATION?? Bulahdelah Central School and the BCS P & C Association Inc. does. Should you require support in saying NO to your son/daughter on their attendance or any other issue please contact us immediately. We all can work together to make a difference to your student’s future. Be on time, be at school, that’s the rule!

In late 1983 Tea Gardens parents called a meeting to discuss the possibility of enrolling their

present Year 6 students at BCS in 1984. The reasons behind this desired change ranged from travel time to Raymond Terrace, overcrowding on the buses and also overcrowding at both Raymond Terrace (now Hunter) and Irrawang High Schools. The meeting formed the unanimous decision to enrol 20 students at BCS. However, the Department of Education, the bus companies, the local councillors, teachers and schools were against this move as were several local families. Bulahdelah P & C Association supported the idea as did some locals and a meeting was arranged with Mr. Beard, Director of Education Hunter Region. This resulted in a definite “no” to the proposal. Many meetings were held and parents sought advice from politicians, legal professionals and the Teachers’ Federation. Early in 1984 only six students wanted to enrol and the decision was made to publicise their plight. The media coverage was extensive. The parents were now meeting almost daily and they decided to approach Mr. Leon Punch, MP and he represented the group by contacting the Director General of Education.

The first day of high school was certainly a memorable one for these six students and their families. When they presented themselves at BCS the then principal, Mr. Ian Aird, advised them that the Department had directed him to refuse enrolment to these students. They spent their first day in the school grounds, supervised but not in class. Day two was the same but then the media arrived by helicopter for interviews, adding some drama to the occasion. The parents were told they faced prosecution because they were “breaking the rules” but after seeking legal advice it was determined that wasn’t the case. After a week of negotiations with Mr. Punch and Mr. Beard, it was agreed to allow the six students to enrol at BCS and the Department would investigate the possibility of further enrolments. All six students together with one late arrival settled down and continued their schooling at BCS through to Year 12. TODAY, BULAHDELAH CENTRAL SCHOOL IS THE PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL FOR TEA

GARDENS/HAWKS NEST STUDENTS. NEXT ISSUE – WHEN DID BCS BECOME A UNIFORM SCHOOL?

Bulahdelah Show Society is seeking applicants for the 2010 Miss Showgirl Competition, open to

all young women aged from 18 years to under 25 years within the area. Prizes are very generous and the winner goes on to represent Bulahdelah at Zone in Maitland in early 2011. It was decided that a Show Ball would not be held in 2010 and that judging for Miss Showgirl will take place later in the year, either just before or during the Show in November. Interested folk (including senior and ex-students) should contact Mrs. Barbie Gordon (co-ordinator) on 49974174.
