WE ARE COMMITTED TO CARRYING OUT PIONEERING RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

Many people are asking themselves why representatives from business, politics and academicinstitutions have come together to establish an association for developing an innovation park inCentral Switzerland. At “Innovationspark Zentralschweiz”, we are convinced that we can achieveimprovements in speed and innovation by combining a range of different strengths, thus resultingin something absolutely unique within Switzerland.

With the Innovation Park, we want to offer a platform for applied research and development in the field of “Building Excellence” in which the skills and strengths seen in industry, politics and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts can all be found under one roof.

Academic research looks a long way ahead into the future here and addresses new topics. As part of this construct, business with its heterogeneous and varied structures is incredibly import-ant. The goal of the Innovation Park is to unite various branches in a single location. With this in mind, a healthy mixture of different business sizes – from start-ups all the way through to listed companies – plays a key role. This mixture – or ecosystem – generates added innovative strength.

The idea also has the support of those in politics, who see the importance of developing innovation in Central Switzerland. In our opinion, having the cantons from Central Switzerland on board is particularly important in order to also be able to address societal interests – including the problems and issues of tomorrow.

This reinforces our work within the association and our efforts towards promoting Central Switzer-land as a driving force in the field of innovation.

RESEARCH TOPICSBUILDING EXCELLENCE

The increasing digitization in construction planning and building equipment, the necessary renewal of building stock to meet energy strategy goals and societal changes all have to be implemented through outstanding construction and excellent buildings. Building Excellence creates innovations in business models, products and services for the partners involved.

What do “excellence” and “building” mean in today’s digitized world? By combining terms associated with excellence and building, new terms are created that open up the potential for research, such as digital processes, networked components or efficient energy systems. The research topics are taken into consideration along the life cycle of a building or area. Within the context of these topics, use cases are then developed for the partners involved.

SAMPLE RESEARCH PROJECT – ENERGY MONITORING AT SUURSTOFFI

The Lucerne School of Engineering and Architecture carries out applied research in the fields of Energy and Building as a System. As part of the Swiss Competence Centers for Energy Research (SCCER), the School is involved in various bodies together with other universities and institutions.

CASE STUDY – ENERGY OPTIMIZATION AT SUURSTOFFI

Starting positionZug Estates AG is currently constructing anew neighborhood north of Rotkreuz railwaystation, which will accommodate some 1,500residents and create up to 2,500 workplaces. The Suurstoffi site is characterized by a consistent orientation towards environmental, social and economic sustainability:

Thermal networkingThermal networking of the Suurstoffi site isbased on a geothermal probe field containing220 probes. These are used to thermally connect the residential and office buildings together, meaning they can exchange heat with one another and/or with the geothermal storage system. In this way, energy can be supplied to an ener-gy reference area of approximately 50,000 m². A signal is sent by the measuring points every 15 minutes. The engineers responsible for energy analysis at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts have to take this immense amount of data and use it to work out where there is potential for improvement.

Goal of the monitoring processThe complete flow of heating and cooling, the system temperatures and the detailedpower consumption are measured and evaluated continuously using almost 400 data points. The results from the measurements and user surveys are used to gain a range of insights into operational and technical efficiency, user behavior, comfort and the functionality of the building technology.

Economic potential presentTaking the Suurstoffi site as an example, it becomes clear that the development of areas or districts into decentralized energy systems makes sense from an environmental perspective. As they can be used throughout the majority of the value chain, the develop-ment of new products and services for local and regional activities in the field of energy supply can be an attractive proposition and is a possible topic for research as part of Building Excellence.

THINK FACTORY

THINK FACTORYINSPIRATIONAL – GOOGLE-LIKE – MODERN – FAMILY-FRIENDLY – CREATIVE

Employees from the participating companies, cantons and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts work in the “Innovation Cube” and thus generate space and time for innovations and ideas outside everyday work. Meetings between various institutions take place on neutral ground and lead to interdisciplinary ideation without any preconceived views.

The space is organized according to the principles of design thinking. Creative techniques, methodsand assistance are available here. A small, fixed team takes care of the organizational sideof things. The facility is open 24/7. The pleasant, professional atmosphere encourages peopleto come – and stay.

PROTOTYPING

PROTOTYPING AREA & HIGH-TECH SERVICES

Prototyping transforms IDEATION into CREATION. Ideas from the Think Factory are materialized or simulated. The prototypes are used for validating concepts and for making presentations to management teams and customers. The Prototyping Area consists of a FabLab and a High-Tech Services Lab. Other decentralizedlaboratories and workshops from Central Switzerland and the other innovation parks are also connected here. The High-Tech Services Lab provides computing capacity, simulation tools and optimization methods. Groundbreaking innovations and processes can also be tested in the Living Lab at the NEST project at Empa, for example.

INNOVATION FROM THE IDEA TO IMPLEMENTATION

“We reinforce the USP of Switzerland – and Central Switzerland in particular – in the construction sector and link these to skills from the field of IT. Aspects are taken into account based on the life cycle of a building, area or city. In doing so, we encounter the major trend of digitization, strengthen the business location Switzerland and are committed to the sustainability of the built environment.” Andrea Weber Marin, Project Head at the “Innovationspark Zentralschweiz”

In future, the business activities at an innovation park in Central Switzerland will be based on thefour pillars of services, research, space management and the participation or support of start-ups.With connections to the other innovation parks and Switzerland Innovation, Central Switzerlandwill also benefit from a nationwide skills network and international marketing.

The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts is a driving force here and is listed as a researchpartner at the Swiss Commission for Technology and Innovation (KTI). Customers can thus benefit from funding for their project from KTI. The innovation park offers companies and startups the possibility of pursuing and implementing an innovative idea at the facilities on site. Links with the organization InnovationsTransfer Zentralschweiz (ITZ) create additional added value andsynergies.

A provisional site for an innovation park in Central Switzerland covering 390 square meters will be available at Suurstoffi 41 in Rotkreuz (ZG) from April 2017 onwards. This site will be used as an incubator for the activities seen within an innovation park. The provisional site at Suurstoffi has connections to the NEST project at Empa in Dübendorf.

SERVICES ON OFFER AT THE PROVISIONAL SITE– Idea generation: Ideas for development and research activities will be generated as part of

creative workshops and Roundtable meetings– Projects: The development of KTI projects with association partners will be accelerated and

supported– Platform: A place for individual and association events, plus customer events – Network: Meetings with university employees and students, networking with companies within

the association, networking with ETH departments

USAGE OF THE PROVISIONAL SITEMembers of the “Innovationspark Zentralschweiz” have the option of active or passive participation. Active participation means spaces can be used as part of private or shared activity. Active members help to found of the provisional site by signing a license agreement.
