SOUTH BRONX UNITED ANNUAL REPORT 2017

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends,

South Bronx United’s programs and services been life changing to many youth and families over the years, but in 2017 our work became even more important. In particular, shifting immigration policies and a social and political landscape that has fostered racism and xenophobia has had a profound impact on the immigrant youth and families we serve. For many, SBU is their crucial support network during turbulent times.

One of the keys to overcoming these challenges is education—education equity, college access, and career preparation—to change life outcomes and prepare youth to become the next generation of leaders in their community and their country. Through the SBU Academy, South Bronx United strives to ensure every participant has the opportunity and skill-set to make it at the next level.

During the 2016-2017 year, 173 middle and high school youth participated in the SBU Academy. The program prepares students for college and careers, including many who join SBU dreaming of becoming soccer stars but who have limited expectations or concepts of higher education. In 2017, 52 percent of graduating seniors were college-ready based on City University of New York criteria, an increase of at least 7 percentage points every year for the past four years, and in comparison to 17 percent of South Bronx high school students overall. SBU Academy graduates are. SBU graduates are attending a range of schools including Kenyon College, New York University, Babson College, University of Albany, Franklin and Marshall College, and Hunter College. In the past five years, 100 percent of SBU Academy seniors have received their high school diplomas, and 95 percent have attended at least some college.

While the SBU Academy has a social impact through long-term outcomes of educational attainment and overall youth development, the organization also addresses the immediate needs faced by South Bronx and immigrant youth and families. SBU hosts or participates in frequent Know Your Rights workshops and immigration screening clinics for youth and families, supporting youth with Deferred Action for Childhood Accountability (DACA) renewal, representing youth in immigration proceedings, and collaborating with other agencies and coalitions on immigrant rights issues. Whether a young person is originally from Mexico, Honduras, Haiti, or Niger, SBU works to ensure they have the best opportunity possible to achieve the American Dream.

SBU has also grown the size of its recreational and afterschool programming to reach 1,100 youth and families, more than ever before. This ensures that more children have access to regular athletic and fitness activities at a time when extra-curricular and health programs are in danger of being cut.

SBU has sought to address themes of social justice that embroil our communities. SBU partnered with the Guggenheim Museum and performance artist, activist, and educator Marc Bamuthi Joseph to provide high school students with the chance to discuss, write, and perform poetry that uses soccer as a metaphor for contemporary social and political issues.

Regardless of the circumstances, South Bronx United’s work will remain vitally important in the community. For that reason, SBU will continue to deepen its services and expand its reach as it has done every year since 2009. This year, organization leadership finalized a two-stage strategic plan. SBU will focus first on building sustainability, community connections, and stronger programs and services. In five years, SBU will be well positioned to expand and plant new roots in the community.

To date, more than 3,000 young people have participated in SBU programs. In 2017 alone, more than 1,300 donors and institutions contributed financially to support our programs. Nearly 300 people donated their time as coaches, tutors, mentors, teachers, and thought partners. Twenty dedicated staff and coach-mentors spent their days on the field, in the classroom, and behind the scenes ensuring that the program achieved results.

Join this SBU community as we reach to make a difference during turbulent times. With our community’s support, we will expand the organization’s positive impact and change life outcomes for South Bronx and immigrant youth and families.

Sincerely,

Andrew So, Executive Director

We strive to promote educational achievement, health and wellness, and character development through activities on and off the soccer field and to unite a diverse group of individuals and an incredibly diverse community toward common positive goals.

SBU envisions a South Bronx community where:• All youth have a support network to help them succeed in school, college, careers, and in their

community.• All youth have access to educational, athletic, and college and career readiness resources.• All immigrant families receive dignity, support, and opportunity.

SBU’s vision is to become:• An international leader in a place based approach to using sports for youth development.• A citywide leader in expanding academic, college, and career opportunities for immigrant youth and

PROGRAMS

The RECREATIONAL SOCCER PROGRAM provides opportunities for children to learn and play soccer in a fun, developmental environment over 33 weeks of the year. The Saturday program is held at three sites in the South Bronx. Afterschool sessions give children additional chances to play.760 Youth Served, Ages 4-16

SBU COMMUNITY SCHOOLS PROGRAM provides afterschool programming at two elementary schools and one middle school. In addition to soccer activities, students work through a health and nutrition curriculum. SBU high school students and alumni serve as assistant coaches and facilitators, enabling them to build leadership skills and gain work experience. New York City FC and the City Football Foundation provide funding through its Cityzens Giving program.60 Youth Served, Ages 7-12

The SELECT SOCCER PROGRAM provides additional opportunities for boys and girls to train on the soccer field and develop as athletes and individuals. Teams compete in youth soccer leagues in the greater New York City metropolitan area. The program offers a natural pathway for youth to join the SBU Academy program beginning in middle school.45 Youth Served, Ages 9-12

GLOBAL YOUTH LEAGUE offers high school aged youth living in the Bronx with a recreational outlet on the soccer field, screenings for immigration legal services, and direct legal representation. The program primarily serves immigrant youth, including a significant percentage of unaccompanied minors who recently immigrated to the United States, often fleeing gangs, violence, and other issues in their native Central American countries.100 Youth Served, Ages 15-20

PROGRAMS

“New York’s most unlikely football league meets every Saturday in the Bronx.

Its players are minors who arrived from Central America without their parents, with no documents or money. They made the dangerous journey here with one goal in mind: to

escape the violence and poverty of their homelands.

Football acts as sort of collective therapy for them, a place to briefly forget the tragedies of the past and the new threats they face from the administration of President Donald Trump.”

SBU KAREN BARTH ARTS PROGRAM

“This masterpiece represents all of us as a community and unites us. For instance, we drew a soccer ball, which connects all of us together. Our piece is about community, love and happiness. In the center is the SBU logo, which means a lot to us.”-Charif Diaoune, 13

“I did many art projects with my class. Some of those projects were the sun print–where you put objects on a special blue paper, put it outside for 5 minutes, and put it in water over night–and the immigration project, where you told and drew a story of a family member who immigrated to the U.S. I have been drawing since I was 7 years old and I have never seen an art class with so much creativity. That’s what I liked the most out of the class: the creativity and respect in the room.”- Vanessa Jerez, 13

LEGAL SERVICES

South Bronx United holds recognition from the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) at the United States Department of Justice. This allows designated staff to practice immigration law and represent youth, families, and the community in proceedings before Immigration Court and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). SBU’s Legal Services Coordinator assesses the needs and eligibility of youth and their family members, manages immigration relief cases, provides legal services and direct legal representation, and offers information to community members on relevant immigration issues. These steps are

crucial to improving the lives of many youth and families and to helping youth on the path towards college and careers.

South Bronx United has supported youth and families in gaining work authorization, legal permanent residency, asylum, and citizenship, with a particular focus on cases for undocumented youth who are eligible for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). SBU staff also organizes Know Your Rights sessions and immigration clinics for youth and parents. SBU is a core member of the Bronx Immigration Partnership.

SBU Academy youth receive support on making sound high school choices. In order to give youth strong academic foundations, open new doors for college, and diversify their life experiences, staff also supports students in applying to boarding schools and preparatory schools in the Northeast. In 2017, eight SBU Academy students attended boarding schools, all on full scholarships; one student, Gnim Bazim

graduated from Mercersburg Academy; and two students completed post-graduate years. Students have attended Choate Rosemary Hall (MA), Indian Mountain School (CT), Lawrence Academy (MA), Loomis Chaffee School (CT), Mercersburg Academy (PA), Northfield Mount Hermon (MA), and Suffield Academy (CT).

Gnim BazimMercersburg Academy Class of 2017 | Freshman, Kenyon College

“I know for sure that I wouldn’t be attending Mercersburg Academy without SBU. Mercersburg is a world-renowned boarding school in Pennsylvania, with alumni including Benecio del Toro, Jimmy Stewart, Rebecca Lowe and ‘Dave-o’ (Michael Davies) from Men in Blazers. Just like at SBU, I made friends from all around the world, I played on a great high school soccer program, and I was given numerous opportunities to gain knowledge beyond the classroom. I attended a Supreme Court case in January and studied aboard trip in Ecuador visiting the Amazon Rainforests and the Galápagos Islands. I was also recruited to become a tour guide the second week of school. Mercersburg created friendships and memories and prepared me for college. South Bronx United and Mercersburg have helped me become

a leader and role model to my peers around me, whether on the soccer field or classroom in the Bronx or at a school in Pennsylvania. This is something I never expected to achieve when I first joined SBU as a shy twelve-year-old. SBU gave me the tools to succeed at boarding school and Mercersburg gave me the tools to eventually succeed in college.”

SCHOOL PLACEMENT

LEADERSHIP

Leadership development is a core goal of the SBU Academy program. The SBU Youth Council offers additional leadership and community service opportunities. The council is comprised of captains and representatives of each soccer team. Together, they discuss initiatives to improve participants’ experience in the program. The Youth Council has also engaged in community service activities (delivering food to a soup kitchen, organizing a computer giveaway), planned youth events, attended community meetings, and served as youth ambassadors for the organization.SBU high school and college students also receive paid and volunteer opportunities to work as coaches and referees in the Recreational Soccer Program or Community Schools Program. In 2017, SBU created the Coaching Corps as a year long fellowship to provide more in-depth

training for a select group of alumni. Corps Fellows gain practical experience serving as an assistant coach in an SBU program, receive individualized coaching support, earn coach and referee licenses, and attend monthly training sessions to prepare them to work as youth development.

At age 16, Jhonny Theze arrived in New York from Haiti without family and without legal status. Jhonny had spent the majority of his childhood without the care and support of either parent. In New York, he connected with a fellow Haitian immigrant, who ultimately agreed to serve as Jhonny’s guardian. One of the first things Jhonny did upon arriving was to seek out a soccer program and he soon found South Bronx United and joined the SBU Academy program. After learning of his situation, SBU’s Legal Services Coordinator identified a path for Jhonny to gain permanent legal residency, enabling him to get an education, start a career, and build a future for himself. As a youth eligible for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, SBU represented Jhonny and his guardian to obtain the necessary paperwork from the

family court to enable Jhonny to petition for his green card. In December 2016, following a process that took one year, Jhonny received his green card. Thanks to SBU’s services, Jhonny now permanent legal status and will be able to access financial aid as he now turns his attention to applying for college. Unfortunately, the challenges are not over. Like nearly 60,000 other immigrants from Haiti, his guardian will likely soon lose his legal protection and authorization to work in the United States, which had been granted 8 years ago under Haiti’s Temporary Protected Status designation. SBU staff is working to see if other legal avenues exist to prevent Jhonny’s family from being broken up once again.

The Summer Soccer Scholars is a five-week, full day program in July and August for rising 6th through 10th graders in the SBU Academy. In 2017, 83 SBU Academy attended the summer program. Students took three classes each morning—Mathematics, Humanities, Health or Arts—all focused on the curriculum theme of Social Justice. Classes were taught by New York City school teachers or instructors at partnering agencies, the Inwood House, Sauti Yetu Center for African Women and Families, and Urban Word NYC. Undergraduate and graduate school interns serve as assistant coaches and mentors

Students completed final projects that included spoken word performances, essays on immigration policy, statistics presentations comparing the poverty rate in different cities, and presentations arguing for equality in gender pay gap. Every Friday, students embarked on weekly field trips: canoeing on the Bronx River, hiking and swimming at Bear Mountain State Park, Bicycling at Governor’s Island, and more.

The Summer Soccer Scholars is funded in part by BlackRock Gives.

Two high school classes worked with the Guggenheim Museum’s Social Practice Initiative, performance artist Marc Bamuthi Joseph, and poet and teaching artist Mahogany L. Browne to create poetry and art pieces that used soccer as a metaphor for society and justice issues. The curriculum, titled M-PACT for moving and passing Curricular Tactics, is based on themes borrowed from Joseph’s touring performance /peh-LO-tah/ and uses art and poetry to focus on contemporary social and political issues.

Our Community | By: Leslie Villegas

The coach controls the teamHe knows what is bestHe might start off with a bad line up of defense like the protection system we have in our communitiesThis sport brings all different kinds of races togetherJust like our countryWho now suffers for the discrimination of social class

Coach tries to control the defense and the center midsDefense being the cops in our communitiesThe goalie being us, who can only use our hands to defend our goal

Our goal being our home for many yearsTrying to protect it from our enemies the upper classHow can we the lower class go against the upper classOur mayor tries to control everyone so everyone may have a benefit

The ones with the most benefit are the forwardsForwards get all the fame from scoring the goalThe landlord gets all the money from scoring the goal on the goalieWho attempts to protect their homeOnce that goal is scoredThey lose their homeThe more the rent goes upThe more goals the landlord scoresThe upper class the enemies make counter attack from this goalNow having an advantage

We are the goaliesWe are the main ones affected by the forwardsThe enemies then come to take over our home

Where is the coach to help usYou expect us to have great paying jobsTo be able to pay this high rent for this old apartment in the city

You have raised the rent so high so the upper class can move inNow im without a homeWell, the rent for this old apartment is too muchIt’s a rip offThe government just places more obstacles in our way,Get a good pay job you say! How?It’s so easy to sayAll these amnemities we have in our communityAre horrible and poorOur education is badOur job oppurtunities are affected by itSo you tell me how!You explain to me how! What is our coach doing about this problem the goalie hasThis field is so big yet so smallIts funny becauseThere is so much space in the suburbs but out of no where just because they wanna move into the cityBecause they have the power they can

Why come take our homes? The opponents really is counter attacking onto our side of the fieldThe coach doesn’t give us a plan to counter attack or help usEven the goalie and the defense don’t get along so wellThat’s a problemThis is the reason so many goals are being scored by our opponentsBye bye goalie you’re moving to another team!

Right BackThe right back is like a train track,It helps the team get back on the attacking map,They also defend and come quick like the flash.

Center backIs usually the guardian,The warrior of the field, like a soldier in a war ready to give it all.The man who gives it his all and gets the fans to applaud.

Left forwardThe one who runs when long passes are given,And the one who follows all the shots. The one who tries to score when they can andPut the ball in the back of the net.The hard worker like a single mother.

advisor, I play for our men’s soccer team, and I lead the Habitat for Humanity group on our campus -- the focus of which to make students socially aware of poverty and ways they can

help. Every Spring, we organize a trip to Mechanicsville, Virginia, where we help build homes for the poor. I dream of going to law school, and perhaps working for the United Nations

afterwards. I believe that my experience with political and social turmoil both in Guinea and the Bronx, can be useful in restoring peace to nations facing life-threatening predicaments.”

Mohamed Camara | SBU Academy Class of 2015 | Junior, Sarah Lawrence College

“The help I received from South Bronx United like SAT Prep, college workshops, and this scholarship enabled me make it to college. I learned how to network, study, and manage my finances. I hope to become successful so that I can make a difference and give back to my

love ones. Thank you to South Bronx United and PlaySoccer2Give supporting me in my goals.”- Jeany Martinez
