BULLET IN - WINTER 2017 / T EVET-N I SAN 5777
Building Community – One Bagel at a Time by Larry Mattes
If you come to Temple on a Sunday morning when
Religious School is in session, you'll see a tablecloth-covered
conference table topped with bagels, cream cheese, jams, a
toaster and coffee urns. You'll also see a group of round
banquet tables where congregants are enjoying their bagels and
schmoozing.
That is just what the Bagel Boys envisioned when they
started their Sunday morning
enterprise. Some years ago, Denny
Hershey was visiting a friend in
Chicago who was doing Sunday
morning bagels. "What a great idea,"
Denny thought, but it wasn't until we
moved into our new building in 2008
that there was an ideal space for the
Temple Emanu El version.
Denny got together with like-
minded Temple friends, Peter Moisio
and Rich Landis, to plan the details
and establish some "forever" rules.
For example, the bagels had to come
from Bialy's and the coffee had to be
from Dunkin' Donuts. It turns out
those were wise decisions because over the years, people not
only commented about their taste and quality, but said they
absolutely knew the sources.
In addition to the original trio, Warren Snow, who had
been enjoying the bagels as a congregant, joined the group five
years ago as a self-described jack-of-all-trades. A year later the
group expanded again to include Nicole Senor, who took over
the role as head cashier.
When asked why they do all this – get up early on a
Sunday morning, schlepp to pick up bagels, cream cheese and
all the other bits and pieces – they said, "I am helping to build a
sense of community." As Warren put it, "I enjoy being with
people and being a part of what makes parents want to stay
instead of using Temple as a drive through."
Warren is a third generation member of Emanu El, having
joined on his own in 2006. He is almost an ever-present
volunteer serving as an usher, and as Shabbat services "water
boy" among other chores. Warren is the Brotherhood recording
secretary and was named Mensch of the Year, being awarded
the first Jerrold Kaplan version of that distinction.
Denny Hershey joined the
Temple in 1976 and has been
involved in almost everything
Emanu El for as long as most of
us can remember including as
Temple president from 2002 -
2005.
Denny reports that the group
usually buys 5 dozen bagels – of
which they sell, on average, about
three quarters of them – an equal
number of cream cheese bricks
plus a group specialty, hot pepper
jam.
According to the table-top
menu, a bagel and a schmear costs
$2.00 and a beverage goes for a
buck. When lox is on the menu, the first slice is $2.00 and all
subsequent slices are $1.00 each. Any leftover bagels can be
bought for only $1.00 each. Denny adds that the group
"creates" omelets on the first Religious School Sunday of the
month.
He is excited to announce a new addition to the menu –
you can now buy a $3.00 Bagel Boys Gift Certificate, which
just happens to coincide with the cost of a bagel, schmear and a
beverage.
Rich Landis joined Emanu El in 1987 and has been a
member of the Bagel Boys since the opening of the new
building. Remember the Fry Boys and their latkes? He was
part of that group, too. On another level, Rich was president of
Emanu El from 2009 - 2011.

Rich says the Sunday morning bagels et al are a great way
to bring people together to just relax and eat and (there's that
word, again) schmooze. "Personally, I see it as a time to meet
some of the Religious School children and their parents," Rich
adds. "I like to greet people – young and old, new members
and long-timers. And it's a wonderful activity to help build
community."
Rich states that the group gets together at the beginning of
each year for a planning session. "We discuss what different
things we can do to entice parents to stay, meet other parents
and come back for more the next week."
A Temple member since 1979, Peter Moisio is a great
believer in the worthwhile contribution the Bagel Boys make to
the Temple and helps answer the question: what can we do to
appeal to parents so they want to stay in the building Sunday
mornings? "What we do helps answer that question," he says.
"We want them to have an excuse to look forward to Sunday
mornings," he adds.
Peter is a firm believer in not varying from the supply
sources mentioned earlier. "People just seemed to prefer
Bialy's and Dunkin' Donuts so, as good marketers, we'll
continue to cater to those preferences,"
Nicole Senor, the "+1" in the Bagel Boys +1, joined the
group in 2012 after having enjoyed the Sunday bagels for
several years before that. With children in Religious School,
she asked one day if the "Boys" would like some help. They
gladly said Yes and she is now the go-to person when you need
to pay for breakfast.
"I enjoy meeting people," Nicole says, and because
everyone has to pass by her as they leave the serving table, she
accomplishes that very nicely.
In addition to collecting pieces of paper with pictures of
Washington or Lincoln on them, she also has a stack with an
illustration of a "Happy bagel." "Those are complementary
coupons given on the occasion of special events or programs,"
she explains. The group donates the bagels.
Profits from these Sunday morning gatherings are
"invested" in Temple Emanu El. Though there are other
Temple programs that benefit from the Bagel Boys +1 efforts,
most are earmarked for the Religious School and youth group
programs.
Bagel Boys Sunday breakfasts are, of course, available to
those who don't have children to drop off. People taking a
Sunday morning class have been known to arrive early just to
get some bagels and a shmear – and schmooze.

Temple Emanu El
encourages our students
to participate in Jewish
experiences outside the
classroom. These additional experiences help reinforce
children’s Jewish identity and broaden their Jewish education.
Jewish camp has proven to enhance children’s commitment to
Judaism while giving them all the exciting recreational
opportunities they want in their summer adventures. There are
many Jewish overnight camps available.
In some cases, Temple Emanu El can help provide financial
support. Both incentive grants and need-based scholarships are
available.
For more information on opportunities and scholarships, visit
the section on Jewish Camping & Israel Programs under the
community tab on the Temple Emanu El website at
www.TEECleve.org. Deadline for scholarship applications
is February 1, 2017. If you have any questions, or haven't
found the right camp, contact Beth Mann at 216-454-1220.

Each year, our 6th graders participate in The Journey Continues,
a program that introduces our students and their parents to the
upcoming process of become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah.
TEE held a fabulous
Great Beer Tasting
social event for nearly
100 congregants and friends where
participants tasted a
variety of local beers including those made
by our own Cantor
Rick Lawrence and
President Matt Ellin.
Our Sunday morning Walking Group has been a huge success. After enjoying the fall weather, our group will take a break
during the winter months and resume walking in the spring.
To enhance the Jewish offerings in our Preschool, our older students are now given the option of a weekly Hebrew class
during the second hour of naptime taught by Religious
School teacher/congregant Paula Goddard. Know someone interested in learning more about our Preschool?
Call 216/454-1308.
During Parent Child Hebrew
this year, students were
assigned a holiday to research
and present to the class. Jennifer and Emerson
Goddard made a beautiful
Simchat Torah cake to share. Parent Child Hebrew is a
wonderful option for families
to learn together while students are in 3rd – 6th grade. Contact
Marla Wolf, 216/454-1214 for
more information.
Our Youth Choir shared their musical enthusiasm at November’s Friday
Night Chai Musical Shabbat service. If you missed their sweet voices, you
can see them again on January 20.

More than 40 women and girls from Temple Emanu El learned to make challah in a crowd of 1500 Jewish women who participated in Challah in the CLE at the Convention Center. Hundreds of thousands of women around the globe were taking
part in this same event. If you missed this inspiring event, TEE plans to participate again next year.
