Spreading Joy to the World
An article on the successes of the Rotary Club of Klerksdorp in the Klerksdorp Record and Your City brought an unprecedented response from our local community where hundreds of people are in dire need of wheel chairs to relieve their burden. More than 150 applications were received for wheelchairs. Fortunately the club has 20 wheel chairs that are available immediately. More will be requested to address the great need which has now come to our attention.
The end of March will mark the handing over of our 500th wheel chair. Klerksdorp Rotary Club is priviledged to receive these wheel chairs from Northcliff Rotary Club at a nominal cost of R100 each.
Over the last few years we have also been fortunate that Rio Casino has provided the sponsorship to pay this fee. The total sponsorship the Rotary Club of Klerksdorp has already received from the Rio Casino for this project is R51,000.
This mother has pushed her son in a wheelbarrow his entire life. He has been dependent on her for every single activity.
PDG Denham Nel helped the young man into his chair and off went mother and son – a jubilant pair. It was his first taste of freedom – freedom to move about and experience what we take for granted every day.

Pres Johan welcomed our visitor - fellow Rotarian Frikkie (Frederick) Hefer (left). Frikkie, a guest of Pierre Coetzee (right), is a South African who hails from the Rotary Club of Weston D6990 in Florida, USA.
RC of Weston was established 1986 and has awarded more than $600,000 in college scholarships and contributed more than $500,000 to their community since then.

The Rotary Club was rocking the afternoon away – Music man Piet Smit was equally comfortable on guitar or concertina, while some members of the Protea-Vastrap Boeredansgroep got every one’s feet tapping.
Although Joe and Pierre each grabbed a Granny, it was Henry Louw and Marie Basson who walked away with a bottle of wine as winners of the dance competition

Klerksdorp Rotary Club
Meeting Report – 4 March 2011
By Brian RossMcDonald
Pres. Johan welcomed everyone to the meeting and requested Jaco Stander to unfurl the flag and say grace. Then Pierre Coetzee introduced his guest, Frikkie Hefer, a visiting Rotarian from D6990 in Florida USA.
Pres. Johan gave a review of historic facts. Frikkie gave an overview of his club’s activities and in response, Tom McGhee explained “Lenny The Lion” and suggested we send one with Frikkie to the Weston RC in USA.
• Anton Swart provided more details about Saturday’s arrangements for the Rotapark braai.
• Viljoenskroon RC has extended an invitation for a Golf day on 12 March at R120.00pp.
• Daudie Reichhardt requested nine barmen to man the three pubs at the Table of Unity.
• Ann’s meeting on Monday, 7 March 6pm at the Clubhouse, to decide its future.
• A big bottle has been placed on the front desk to collect small change for Polio.
Sergeant Clifton Piek had everyone in stitches with his new meanings for the famous Indian cricket grounds. Johann Oberholzer did the fourway test.
Get involved with World Rotaract Week: 7-13 March
Every year, World Rotaract Week honors the chartering of the first
Rotaract club in 1968.
World Rotaract Week is a time for Rotaractors and Rotarians around the world to come together to celebrate the success and importance of the Rotaract program. This event is also an excellent opportunity to inform members of your community about the amazing work that Rotaract clubs do, and give them an opportunity to get involved.
Rotaract clubs and sponsor Rotary clubs that participate in 2011 World Rotaract Week activities 7 to 13 March 2011 now have a new way to recognize their achievements. They have the freedom to explore a variety of methods of participating in World Rotaract Week. Rotaractors can decide the best way for their club to celebrate the Rotaract program – completing one, two or an entire week’s worth of activities. After the club has completed its World Rotaract Week commemorative events, the sponsor Rotary club or district Rotaract chair can download a certificate of recognition for presentation to the Rotaract club. Suggestions for these activities include:
• Conduct a joint project with a Rotary club.
• Plan a literacy day to be held annually
• Invite Rotaractors to Rotary club meetings and vice versa.
• Give a presentation about Rotaract to a Rotary club that does not sponsor a Rotaract club.
• Publicize Rotaract in local media.
• Conduct a fundraiser for Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge.
• Encourage cross-promotion between Interact, Rotary Youth Exchange, RYLA, and other community youth organizations.
• Partner with international Rotaract clubs.
• Establish monitoring programs between Rotaractors, Interactors and Rotarians.
• Introduce potential members to Interact by inviting them to a meeting or a project.

I've often been asked, 'What do you old folks do now that you're retired?'
Well... I'm fortunate to have a chemical
engineering background and one of the things I enjoy most is converting beer, wine and vodka into
urine.
I do it every day and I really enjoy it.

Rotary Youth Leadership Award
Every year the Rotary Club nominates young adults from local schools to participate in the
Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA). This year 80 scholars attended RYLA in Kroonstad. The 2011 programme focussed on leadership, communication and entrepreneurship.
RYLA participants from Klerksdorp
Back: Kethabile (St Conrads), Shana (St Conrads), Frans (Klerksdorp Technical High School), Daniel (St Conrads) and Nico Kritzinger, Director Vocational Committee, Klerksdorp Rotary Club.
Front: Zukiswa (St Conrads), Joanna (St Conrads) and Ntemogisang (New Vision)
The RYLA program is a no-cost to participant leadership training seminar for young adults aged between 18 and 25 years. It is conducted on a district basis annually with participants being sponsored through local Rotary Clubs. This residential program is aimed at encouraging and developing leadership and social skills. Awardees are able to enhance their existing contribution to their local community in a practical manner. Young
adults led by young adults.
Each Rotary Club is invited to sponsor potential young leaders by providing the financial support for a seminar of one week's duration and by transporting them to and from the venue. Wherever possible, awardees should be invited to meet their sponsoring club members prior to the seminar and to report back after its conclusion. Maintaining contact with awardees is desirable as they can be a valuable resource for the development of ongoing youth programs.
It is the responsibility of the District RYLA Committee to present a stimulating, informative program featuring prominent successful business and professional people who have proven records of achievement.
The week culminates in the awarding of a RYLA Certificate of Achievement which can be presented back in the Rotary club environment. The seminar offers the opportunity of disseminating the Rotary ideal of service to the community as well as creating an awareness of the range of programs available through Rotary sponsorship.
LENNIE’S TRAVELOGUE
Lennie Lion raising funds for the Stilfontein
Safe Home
Lennie, the Klerksdorp Rotary Club’s travelling lion is raising funds for the Stilfontein Safe Home.
Last week Lennie was spotted with Rutherglen Rotary Club President Eddie Goldberg outside Celtic Football Club in Parkhead, Glasgow.
This week Lennie and Eddie show us a replica of the European Cup that Glasgow Celtic won in 1967 displayed inside the famous football club. Andy Cattanach, Immediate Past President of Rutherglen confirmed that they will pass Lennie on to another club soon and propose a donation be given at their next council meeting.
P.S. Lennie is very excited to hear that his two brothers, Larry and Louis, are also planning to travel the world to raise funds for the Stilfontein Safe Home.
