FEBRUARY 2017 Brandenburg United Methodist Church We probably don’t even realize fully now, but January was a pivotal time in the life of our church. After several months of work, the vision team was able to share with the congregation their discernment about the values of Christ that we want to begin to live out as a church. The mission was stated, and the vision of the kind of church we want to be in the future was brought before the congregation. These focuses will now be the foundation for the plans we de- velop and the decisions we make. In the midst of all that is happening on the level of the whole church there is still the reality of living day to day on the personal level. Mem- bers of our congregation certainly have had their share of grief to deal with and other per- sonal challenges. Over the next few weeks I’m going to be shifting the focus of my messages from topics that address the church to subjects that hit close to home for many people. While we all claim to have faith, we know that life has a way of causing us to doubt, question, and feel like our faith is weakening. Beginning Sunday, February 5, I’ll be starting a new sermon series titled, “Unshakeable Faith.” We will look at top- ics such as doubt, illness, and failure and how we respond when the foundations of our faith seem in danger of crumbling. I’ll look forward to seeing each of you during this series. Looking a bit farther ahead, I’m excited about a new series we will be starting in March that will take a look at some subjects addressed in a book by Paul Young from a few years ago called The Shack. There will be a movie of the same name released early in March to coincide with our new series. During this series we will look at relevant scriptures and tackle life’s toughest questions around suffering, forgiveness, loss, and finding a connection with God after tragedy. As we move forward in 2017 let’s take serious- ly our desire to be a church that makes disciples of Jesus Christ, cares more about serving than be- ing served, and desires to build bridges and make connections with people who are looking to con- nect with God and the community of the church. The BUMC Tribe is at it again! We have kicked off the Spring Semester with a new series called “Jesus-Centered Life” where we are exploring the ways He asks us to keep him in the center of our life with all things pointing towards Him, rather than looking for Him only when things go wrong. We have implemented small groups that are meet-ing on Sunday nights to reinforce the Jesus-Cen-tered Life curriculum, and I am super excited about our volunteers and leaders. THANK YOU for step-ping up to the plate and leading the future of our church! We have secured our week at The Crossings for high school church camp this summer and have several middle schoolers registered to attend the Jr High Summit at Camp Loucon! They are all sure to blessed by both! Be on the lookout for our Make A Mark March coming soon! We are excited about some new op-portunities to serve our church and community! God is GOOD!

In 2014 the Camp & Retreat Ministry of the Ken-tucky Annual Conference introduced a 3-tier pricing structure that encourages camper families to pay the true cost of camp. It has also allowed families to pay a lesser amount if they find themselves financially unable to afford the higher rate. While it is important that camps cover their expenses, this cannot take place at the sacrifice of becoming an exclusive ministry open solely to those with greater financial means. While it is important our camps become self-sufficient, it is equally important they remain a place that truly welcomes children and youth from all walks of life. Tier 1 – Church Partnerships Make Camp Pos-sible: At this level every camper’s fee is subsidized by church partnerships, generous donors, and other year-round programs. We are glad to offer Tier 1 because it keeps the Christian Camping experience available to those facing financial struggles. Tier 2 – The New True Cost of Camp: Tier 2 is what it currently costs to provide this ministry. Elect-ing to pay the Tier 2 price helps cover the full cost of providing a Christian Camp experience. If you are able to pay this rate, recognize the value of camp, desire to cover your child’s expenses, and want to insure camp has a solid financial foundation, then choose this tier. Last year Tier 2 was a subsidized level of camp fee. This year it is where you’ll see the true cost. Tier 3 – Paying it Forward: This is a way for you to help those in need have the same amaz-ing Christian Camping experience you provide for your child. This tier covers the cost of your camp and helps offset Tier 1 camper fees and those who require full scholarships. This level is about loving your neighbor! Camp Loucon (the closest camp to us) provides a safe, encouraging, fun, and faith-filled experience for children and youth! For more information about Camp Loucon you may visit their Web site, http://www.loucon.org. As has been our practice for years, Brandenburg United Methodist Church splits the cost of camp 50-50 for children of our members. Our camps are a blessing. The fruits of their work are evident every year in changed lives, new disci-ples and ever deepening and maturing faith in our campers. Simply, there is nothing that speaks to the soul like camp.
