Accessing NCHS Data Sets: Using CDC WONDER and DATA2010
CDC WONDER provides access to NCHS Mortality (1999, 1979-98), Natality (1995-98), and Linked Birth/Infant Death (1995-98)
DATA2010 provides the most recent monitoring data for tracking Healthy People 2010 (national and some state data, operational
definitions, and other measurement information.)

Data for 2002 reveal that the
rate of cesarean delivery rose to the highest level ever reported in the U.S. Find the
method of delivery fields by
browsing the SETS 2002
Natality data file.

SETS FeaturesSelecting RecordsIn working with
NCHS data, careful attention should be paid
to the documentation. For example, to match estimates
reported by NCHS in SETS,
one must exclude foreign born residents
before tabulating natality data.
Exclude foreign born residents, by choosing Records and Select from the menu. Per documentation, use the field STRESFIP, the operator != (not equal) and the code 00 (foreign born residents).
SETS FeaturesRecoding Fields
Let’s create a recode for cesarean
deliveries, based on the DELMETH5 field. To match
figures published in the Final
Report, we need to combine the
primary and repeat cesarean deliveries for a
total.

your choice.
