Beckhoff | Intelligent Building Automation

PC-based control technology from Beckhoff, which has already been used success-

fully for almost three decades in all areas of industrial automation, has become an

integral component of intelligent building automation. The demands on the intel-

ligence of buildings have increased constantly in recent years, such that the energy

effi ciency as well as a good “return on investment” is the priority. The idea of a

“green building” based on sustainable, energy-effi cient construction and building

use can be realised with intelligent, integral building automation. Beckhoff offers

a universal, scalable building automation control system covering PC- and Ethernet-

based controllers and a modular I/O system for logging all data points in buildings.

In the Beckhoff I/O system, an extensive range of Bus Terminals is available to building technicians for connect the sensor and actuator systems. This provides the freedom to assemble the modules required for the application as if from a construction kit. On top of that, the fi ne granularity of the terminals permits precise tailoring of the I/O level to actual needs; i.e. only that which is actually needed must be purchased.

The core of the intelligent building control is the Beckhoff Industrial PC with TwinCAT automation software. For all areas of application, from the small controller to automate a single room or a certain building zone up

to a high-performance computer for the control of a large HVAC system, Beckhoff offers a scalable product range from which the building technician can choose. The free program-mability of the controller is extremely helpful in the realisa-tion of very complex tasks.

Comprehensive software libraries that were specially developed for building automation and simplify and opti-mise software engineering round off the Beckhoff portfolio. Object-oriented function blocks ensure good readability and expandability of the user programs. In addition, they guar-antee high system functionality and reusability of templates.

Openness is another advantage of the Beckhoff platform for building automation.

The standardised communication protocols BACnet/IP, OPC-UA and Modbus-TCP

facilitate integration of Industrial PCs in existing systems. All common fi eldbus sys-

tems used in building automation, including LON, EIB, DALI and MP-Bus, can be inte-

grated in the control system via intelligent Bus Terminals.

PC-based control technology from Beckhoff offers a high potential for the opti-

misation of energy effi ciency in buildings. The Beckhoff solution already makes

building automation of energy effi ciency class A according to DIN EN 15232 possible

today. Solutions for consumption data acquisition “from the I/O Bus Terminal to the

ERP system” as well as solutions for energy optimisation, for example, in computer

centres, round off the range of offers.

Beckhoff Building Automation | Room automation

Integrated room automation covering different functionalities is the key to effi cient building

operation and well-being of the users and offers signifi cant savings potential. Intelligent link-

ing of the individual physical data points reduces not only their number and error-proneness,

but also energy consumption. This leads to signifi cant cost reduction during the construction

phase and during operation.

Communication between the individual automation stations takes place via Ethernet TCP/IP. The degree of automation of a particular room can be individually adapted through custom confi gura-tion of the Bus Terminals. Alterna-tively, the BC9191 room controller integrates these functions in a module. Rooms or areas with repeating requirements only have to be programmed once. The pro-gram template can then be copied as required and enables integrated, effi cient room automation based on energy effi ciency classes.

Beckhoff Building Automation | Facade

Building facades have to meet a wide range of demands. The architectural design primarily

focuses on aesthetic aspects. After all, the facade determines the visual appearance of a

building. From an engineering point of view, the facade also has to meet thermal insulation,

glare protection and safety requirements.

Drives for blinds and other shading devices are controlled via digital output terminals such as KL2722 or KL2602. Shading can reduce heating or cooling performance through inte-gration into the room automation. Combination with lighting control offers further scope for energy opti-misation.

Window contacts connected via digital input terminals such as the KL1404 are used for controlling the heating or cooling system and send information on the security status of the building to the control level.

Electric window drives can be used to optimise air quality, for sum-mer night cooling and for smoke extraction.

Integration of weather data can be realised via serial or analog inter-faces or via web services, depending on the degree of automation. This way, the facade is protected from wind and frost.

Comprehensive function blocks from the “Building Automation” and “HVAC” software libraries round off the range of applications.

Beckhoff Building Automation | Remote maintenance

Due to the complexity of the tasks involved, automation of buildings and properties requires

access via remote diagnostics, maintenance and control. Swift support from specialists is a

prerequisite for troubleshooting, software maintenance and installation of updates in order

to avoid unnecessary costs and failures. Information about process parameters is required

for building operation and system optimisation. Warning and error messages can be sent to

service staff via SMS or e-mail.

Beckhoff Building Automation | Logging of energy data

Due to rising running costs and increasingly centralised management of buildings, computer

centres and properties, demand for energy and consumption data monitoring is increasing.

Through the combination of PC technology and Bus Terminal components Beckhoff offers an

ideal platform for realising these tasks. Seamless integration of energy and consumption data

monitoring for all building functions into the automation system results in savings potential

and synergy effects during system installation and building operation.

Solutions for logging of energy dataIn conjunction with current trans-formers, the 3-phase KL3403 power measurement terminal enables measurement of all relevant electri-cal data and offers comprehensive network analysis for the building automation system. A function block from the HVAC software library measures RMS values of current and voltage, effective, apparent and reactive power, cos φ, etc.

In many cases, electricity meters provide data in the form of pulse signals. Here too, the Bus Terminal range offers a wide range of sam-pling options. The type and duration of the pulse is decisive for the selec-tion of the correct Bus Terminal:– The KL140x has a 3 ms input

fi lter.– The KL1232 extends very short

pulses to 100 ms; the input fi lter is 0.2 ms.

– The KL1512 is an up/down coun-ter with an input fi lter of 0.2 ms.

The pulses are processed based on standard function blocks such as trigger and counter.

M-Bus counters can be con-nected via level converters to a serial interface. TwinCAT offers a software library with function blocks for com-mon M-Bus counters.

The KL3681 multimeter terminal can be used to measure currents and voltages directly in the control system. The TwinCAT Scope enables curve display in real-time.

Beckhoff | Products and application examples

The PC- and Ethernet-based control solution from Beckhoff is ideally suited for building

automation due to its open interfaces based on IT and Windows standards. With the reso-

lute application of Ethernet from the sensor/actuator level via the PC level to the manage-

ment level, all building users share a common data network. This means, for example,

that intelligent components such as operating panels can communicate directly with the

higher-level PC controller via the network cabling.

The Beckhoff Bus Terminal system for the interfacing of data points not only supports

all common sensors and actuators, but also integrates all main bus systems via correspond-

ing Bus Coupler types. With over 400 different Bus Terminals, Beckhoff offers the right

technology for all data points. The retrofi tting of building functions is greatly simplifi ed

with the Bus Terminals. Subordinate subsystems such as EIB, LON, DALI, MP-Bus, M-Bus

or RS232/RS485 serial interfaces can be integrated via communication Bus Terminals.
