Series/1 1 6-bit architecture is de-signed to speed response, make thesystem adaptable to a variety ofrequirements and make input/outputdevices easy to add or change.

A unique cycle-steal channel inter-leaves I/O operations with process-ing to handle data at speeds up to1.6 megabytes per second. Up to 256devices are individually addressable. Many of these attached devices arecontrolled by their own microproces-sors, reducing the channel loadingon the main processor.

I/O devices are attached to the mainprocessor through I/O feature cardsthat plug into the processor or anadditional I/O Expansion Unit.

A tailored approach to softwareSeries/1 software consists of anextensive array of systems programsand program-support tools. Program-mers can select and implement onlythose functions required to meet theirapplication needs. For example, youcan choose from two operating sys-tems: The Realtime ProgrammingSystem or the Event Driven Executive. Both are intended for interactivemultiterminals, multitasking and multi-programming as well as batch appli-cations. A group of Control ProgramSupport programs is also available forthose who wish to develop applica-tions with a tailored control program.

The Series/1 software support forcommunications is designed to meeta broad range of requirements. Also anumber of program aids is availablefor earlier program development aswell as for unique system require-ments.

Build your kind of Systemfrom a remarkable variety oflow-cost hardware

IBM Series/1 is a unique combinationof low-cost, modular components. You select just those units that meetyour present needs. You can easilychange or add units at any time asyour needs change.

You have a wide variety of powerfulequipment units to choose from:processors .. . fixed and removablestorage media ... fast and efficientinput/output attachments ... plusattachment features that allow you touse non-IBM terminals and equip-ment such as plotters, Teletype* unitsand terminals.

Advanced technologyIn both hardware and software, yourSeries/1 benefits from some of IBM'smost advanced technology. Bothlogic and main memory circuits arefast, small and reliable. These circuitspack extra computing and storagecapacity on a few pluggable circuitcards that increase reliability, systemavailability and ease of servicing.
