Charge: University New Library Committee• The university library is the heart of the campus. ….. It

reflects an organic combination of people, collections, services, and facilities, whose sole purpose is to assist users in the process of transforming information into knowledge.

• Technological change is transforming libraries and has rendered obsolete the concept that a library exists in isolation and self sufficiency. Libraries exist in a collaborative, complex information-driven world. The modern library must be dynamic and future-oriented…….

• These principles will be the foundation on which our new library is built.

Decision-Making• Traditional, Stationary Shelving

– No change to current layout– Keep all materials in open shelving, like the current library– Estimated space needed is 34,199 square feet

• Compact Shelving– Approach recommended by Internal Library Committee– Move 95% of collection in to compact stacks– Estimated space needed is 18,164 square feet

• Hybrid approach

– Second choice of Internal Library Committee– Monographs – open and traditional / Serials – compact– Estimated space needed is 28,575 square feet.

Vision Sessions• Architectural Vision

– 17 Interior "ooh wow" (rock wall, fireplace, water feature) – 15 Distinctive but traditional – 14 Landmark/guidepost to transport visitors, ie. clock tower or spire – 12 Physical impetus to drive the Chamberlain quad – 12 Sustainable-opportunity / LEED as much as possible

• Patron Environment – 12 People as "center" – 12 Make the Library the "place" for academic gathering– 10 Quiet "nooks and crannies" – 9 Flexible, traditional and warm but encourages work – Tie: 8 - Non-intimidating and Students 3rd place

• Themes– 18 Sanctuary for study – 15 Intellectual center of campus, perhaps of Chattanooga – 11 Reflects the highest values of the institution – 11 "Center" of University
