Spouse Employment Program
Spouses seeking employment assistance are highly encouraged to visit the Employment Readiness Program at U.S. Army Garrison-Miami Army Community Service. Assistance is provided to spouses in acquiring skills, developing networks, assessments, how to network and conduct research, local employment market opportunities, researching employment resources, preparing them for the work force and to develop a career/work plan.
Spouses receive comprehensive, accurate, and up-to-date information on available employment opportunities, education, volunteer resources, along with community-based support services which assist in making informed decisions on seeking employment.
Services provided consist of individual and group career assessment and counsel, negotiating salary, career exploration, instruction in job search strategies including the use of the internet, headhunters, and employment agencies, staffing agencies, newspapers and local resources.
Spouse Employment also partners with Ms. Vanessa Cervantes, Military Family Employment Advocate with CareerSource South Florida. She assists spouses with potential employment opportunities from her data bank, assists with reviewing resumes, providing resources, along with meeting them by appointment on Wednesday at the Army Community Service Center.
Resume and interview technique workshops are scheduled on a monthly basis. Army Community Service Center’s career resources include computers, faxes, printers, and expanded career library. These services are offered free of charge.

Military Service Coordinator Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD) Claim Procedures
Service members requesting assistance with their Pre-Discharge Claims will need to visit or contact the Office of Florida Department of Veterans Affairs (FDVA). Service members are also welcome to contact a local Veteran Service Organization (VSO) to request assistance with this process.
FDVA is located at the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC), 1201 NW 16th Street, Room A213, Miami, FL 33125, 305.575.3141. Hours of operation are from 8:00am to 4:00pm, Monday through Friday. Military members are serviced on a walk in basis only.
Military members are required to bring a copy of their medical records from their local Military Treatment Facility along with any medical records from external treatment facilities. The Miami VA does not accept information on CD for processing claims.
Service members should arrive between 7:30am to 8:00am to avoid parking congestion and potential crowd concerns at the hospital. Make sure you bring information such as: family member information, marriage certificate, social security numbers, and birth certificates.
Once a claim is processed by the FDVA it will be sent to Mr. Enrique Carrion, Military Services Coordinator, for his review. If any questions or additional information is required, Mr. Carrion will make contact with the claimant directly before submitting the claim for processing.
Thank you for your military service and cooperation in complying with these new procedures as the Veterans Administration (VA) continues to provide the necessary assistance in ensuring your Pre-Discharge Claims are processed in a professional and timely manner.

Memorial Day is a time for us to reflect on those who lost their lives in service to our nation. The Gold Star and Next
of Kin Lapel buttons are presented to their surviving Family members in remembrance of those whose lives were lost.
GOLD STAR AND NEXT OF KIN LAPEL BUTTONS
In 1947, Congress approved the use of the Gold Star Lapel Button as a way to recognize the Families of service members who lost their lives while engaged in action against an enemy of the United States. In 1977, the Army approved issue of the Lapel Button for the Next of Kin of Deceased Personnel to honor those who lose their lives while serving on active duty or while assigned in a Reserve or National Guard unit in a drill status. Issue of the button is retroactive to 29 March 1973.”
These small lapel buttons, or pins, as they are commonly called, are normally presented to eligible Family members prior to the military funeral service. Although they are less than an inch in size, they are packed with great meaning and emotion. They are not awards. They are symbols of honor. Here is how you can tell them apart.
GOLD STAR LAPEL BUTTON
This symbol consists of a gold star on a purple background, bordered in gold and surrounded by gold
laurel leaves. It is designated for eligible survivors of service members who lose their lives during any armed hostilities in which the United States is engaged, dating back to World War I. This includes service members who lose their lives while deployed in support of military operations against the enemy or during an international terrorist attack.
NEXT OF KIN OF DECEASED PERSONNEL LAPEL BUTTON
This symbol consists of a gold star within a circle that commemorates his or her honorable service. The gold star is also surrounded by sprigs of oak that represent the branches of the Armed Forces. It is designated for eligible survivors of
Suicide Prevention Workshop for Caregivers
The Army Substance Abuse Program, (ASAP) at US Army Garrison-Miami Sponsored an Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, (ASIST) February 23-27 February 2015. Personnel from all over the United States, including Arizona, Hawaii, Washington and Louisiana attended the training. Twenty-one personnel, comprised of Active Duty, US Army Reserve, Army National Guard and Department of the Army civilians completed the course that week, including 11 personnel assigned to and/or supported by USAG-Miami.
LivingWorks, the company that provides the training and their Headquarters, are located in Canada. LivingWorks program provides caregivers and other helpers with awareness and skills that help to save lives. The program is part of national, regional and organizational suicide prevention strategies around the world.
ASIST is a two-day interactive workshop that prepares caregivers to provide suicide life assisting, first aid intervention. Small group discussions and skills practice are based on adult learning principles. ASIST teaches Pathways for Assisting Life (PAL), a practical guide to doing suicide interventions.
To attend this class, candidates may be a caregiver formally or not, adults and youth 16 and older.

Who can wear the pin?
The Family members entitled to receive and wear these symbols are the widow or widower; each child, stepchild, and child through adoption; each brother, half brother, sister, and half-sister; and each of the parents (this includes mother, father, stepmother, stepfather, mother through adoption, father through adoption, and foster parents in loco parentis).
I did not receive a pin, where do I get one?
If you are an eligible family member, but did not receive the lapel button to which you are entitled, you can request one through the National Archives. You can also apply for a replacement should yours ever be lost or damaged. If you would like help applying for a new or replacement Lapel Button, contact Survivor Outreach Services at 305.437.2178.
Ready for Hurricane Season?
Hurricane season begins June 1! Tropical cyclones are among nature’s most powerful and destructive phenomena and we in South Florida need to be prepared. Even areas well away from the coastline can be threatened by destructive winds, tornadoes and flooding from these storms.
It’s vital to you and your family’s wellbeing to plan for what to do when a hurricane threatens.

When will personnel be released from duty?
The final decision regarding personnel duty reporting is the HQ SOUTHCOM Chief of Staff. The decision is based on these and other situation unique factors:
• Are 58mph winds forecast within 48 hours at Miami?
• Are there current or planned closures of local government offices?
• Are there current or planned curtailments of county/city transportation services?
• Are there current or planned closures of schools?
• What is the recommendation of the Federal Executive Board and/or Miami-Dade emergency managers?
• Are significant events or operations ongoing for HQ SOUTHCOM?
How can I learn about the operating status of HQ SOUTHCOM?
Changes to HQ SOUTHCOM duty reporting are disseminated in the following ways:
Hurricane Hotline: 305.437.3919 or DSN 567.3919. SOUTHCOM will update this phone line as changes are implemented.
AtHoc Alert Notification System: This system is used to send mass notifications to personnel. Messages may go out as phone call(s), text to cell phone, email, pop-up on work computer.
WATCHGRAM: An email notification to leadership. Therefore, chain of command should have latest status.SOUTHCOM websites: Public www.southcom.mil/Pages/Default.asp and CAC accessible only: “https://intranet.hq.southcom.mil/sites/j3/ j33/ j337/METOC%20Support%20Docs/Destructive%20Weather.aspx”
What about evacuation?
The Commander, US Southern Command, has the authority to order an evacuation of military, dependents of military personnel, civilian employees and dependents of civilian employees to a safe location. However, emergency managers of Miami-Dade say mass evacuation of
all residents is not recommended for storms within 72 hours of South Florida since traffic congestion would leave people vulnerable in their automobiles. Therefore, it is very unlikely the commander will order a mass evacuation prior to a storm. Therefore, those who live in storm surge zones, mobile homes, or other non-resilient homes need to make personal plans for evacuation.
My home has no storm protection (shutters, storm windows) or I live in a mobile home. I intend to evacuate. What should I do?
Advance planning is essential. Plan to pack your family, pets and important documents quickly. Make prior arrangements to stay with family or friends in a safe, storm-ready house. Another option is to go to a storm-ready hotel. Finally, county storm shelters are available; it is prudent to locate closest shelters early and know the route. Once you’ve decided on your destination, notify your chain of command of your location.
Will the government reimburse me if I evacuate my home?
Not normally. Only an ordered evacuation from the installation commander obligates reimbursement. Civil authorities may order
an evacuation; however, they cannot obligate government funds.
May I bring my family and pets to HQ SOUTHCOM installation to ride out the storm?
No. The installation is not a Red Cross certified shelter. Without special funding, the installation can’t support care and feeding for additional personnel.
What do I do after the storm?
Take care of immediate safety concerns first. Contact chain of command as soon as possible after storm passage. If unable to reach chain of command, call the SOUTHCOM JOC at 305.437.3600. Text messages often will be delivered when normal cell phone calls will not go through. If you have no communications, try your neighbors.

WHAT’S UP IN MWR?MALTZ CHALLENGE
The Maltz Challenge is a high-intensity crossfit work out that was started in 2007 by Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Agents. It is named after Air Force Master Sergeant Michael Maltz, a Para Rescue Jumper who was killed along with five others when the Pavehawk helicopter they were in crashed during a medical evacuation of sick Afghanistan children on March 23, 2003.
This year, THE DEA Miami Field Division honored U.S. Navy Seal Jacques Fontan. He served numerous tours in the Navy before attended Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training from April to October 1998, followed by service with SEAL Team EIGHT at Naval Amphibious Base (NAB) Little Creek, Virginia, from October 1998 to July 2001. His final assignment was with SEAL Team TEN at NAB Little Creek from September 2001 until he was killed in action while deployed to Afghanistan when the MH-47
Chinook helicopter he was aboard was shot down by an enemy rocket-propelled grenade on June 28, 2005, during Operation Red Wings. Jacques Fontan is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
The Maltz Challenge is a timed fitness circuit consisting of eight events conducted in order:
• 400 meter run• 50 pull-ups• 100m fireman’s carry or 200m farmers walk• (50 lbs. men/25 lbs. women)• 50 dips• 100 pushups• 50 knee-to-elbows• 100 sit-ups• 400m run
On Friday March 20th, MWR and the DEA Miami Field Division held the Maltz Challenge in front of the Fitness Center. Approximately 50 people participated. The winner of this year's Maltz Challenge was MSgt Trevor Brinton.
TRIBUTE TO THE MILITARY 5K
On March 22, 2015 at Tropical Park, more than 50 members from SOUTHCOM participated in the Tribute to the Military 5K Run/Walk. The entry fee was sponsored by the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) Sports and Fitness. This event is held every year to honor and memorialize the men and women who have given so much to help protect and defend our freedom.

Military Spouses Day was created by President Ronald Reagan to acknowledge the significant contributions, support, and
sacrifices of spouses of their Armed Forces. In 1984, Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger established the Friday before Mother’s Day as Military Spouses Day. Each year, the US President normally commemorates this day with a ceremonial speech and proclamation. This year, Military Spouse Appreciation Day will be celebrated on Friday, May 8th. Military Spouse Appreciation Day was created to honor the spouses of those who serve, be it in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, or Coast Guard with a day set aside to recognize what a powerful difference spouses make in the lives of our service members. The theme for this year is “The Strength of our Service Members.” It is a day for us to honor and recognize the sacrifices that military spouses make when they give up comforts of their home when on an overseas assignment and when they are separated from their spouses during deployments as well as when a service member makes the ultimate sacrifice while defending the Nation they serve. The Miami Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (Family and MWR) and Coast Guard MWR will honor and recognize military spouses during a Military Spouse Appreciation Luncheon that will be held on Saturday, May 30th at the Coast Guard Station Miami Beach at 11:00 am.
